Walrus just makes incredible pedals, so many great sounds from that one little box! I love that you repeat you aren't a fuzz expert, I have written off the effect for a long time because I only associated it with the velcro sound as well. The intro tune opened up a lot of new tonal area I am excited to try for myself. Great stuff.

I was at a restaurant once and the couple next to us said “this is coffee for people who hate coffee”…one, they were wrong, the wanted milk and sugar with a splash of coffee but this review was essentially “this is a fuzz for people who hate fuzz” and people who hate fuzz are also wrong and want a boost with a bit of hair. Fuzz is something you lean into and submit to like riding a killer whale while it hunts great white sharks. If you try and play polite it’ll throw you off. If it sounds ugly you need to lean in and make it sound uglier and louder and be willing to have your amp, guitar and ears explode and that’s when it’ll sound transformative and warp space/time into a singularity.

Was curious if you know how it handles buffers? Apologies if this gets answered in the vod, watching on a work break and not sure if that's addressed. Morningstar ml10x is sick, but no non-buffered loops is a bit of a stinker for some fuzz pedals, so trying to find a good fit there.
@markjohnstonofficial2 жыл бұрын
I’ve got it sitting after my tuner, compressor, drive. And a digital reverb. I don’t specifically touch on it in the video but it clearly doesn’t care about placement in the chain.
@orryfishburne53262 жыл бұрын
U should also check out the Spaceman Effects Sputnik III and Benson Temp Controlled Germanium Fuzz. Both are designed to be able to handle a buffered signal, and like Mark said, the Eons had no problem being placed after a buffer. Idk if u have some fuzz pedals already, but if so, u should experiment and see how they sound after a buffer. I know common practice is to avoid that so the circuit behaves and sounds like it should, but some people really like the way some fuzzes sound after buffers. Worth it to experiment if u can and worse case u don’t like it and know for sure that u prefer that pedal before buffers.

Great tones and sounds, great playing, and what a lovely voice you got! The only "bad" thing I have to mention is the length of the video: For old-school gearheads like me this is wonderful, but I think that for most people - 6 minutes is about enough and 9 minutes is too long. Since this is a quality in-depth review, maybe in the future you can make a short "Highlights" version, and include the in depth one. Of course this is just a suggestion, you don't have to listen to me :) Thanks for the great review, I enjoyed it! :)

I love fuzz and this video is super useful. The eq instead of just tone shape is genius-I imagine doing lots with that. And the price is good for what it does. I have put this in my list to get. For versatility, can anyone offer a critical evaluation of the Kernom Ridge augmented analog overdrive? It seems like it would do a lot in that space too. I would love to see a Secret Weapons review of it.

What was your rationale for putting the Blue Sky before the Eons in your signal path?

The Baum guitar parts on the mellower part utilize reverb before fuzz for some shoegaze style textures. Wet effects ahead of a good heavy fuzz or distortion can be great

What’s the difference between the voltage control on this and a bias control on something like the Keeley Fuzz Bender or JHS 3 Series fuzz? Also, for those of you looking for a potentially less expensive fuzz with similar flexibility to what Mark is describing, the Keeley Fuzz Bender is fantastic. Bass and treble controls as well as a bias control which can give you that spitty velcroey sound if you want it.
@facundorodriguez2882 жыл бұрын
Essentialy they (should) control the same thing: the voltage that goes to the collectors of the transistors. The difference may be that in some pedals, the potentiometer only controls voltage in one of the transistors, and in other it controls the amount of voltage in all transistors. (The fact that it is called "voltage control" makes me think of the latter with this pedal but I dont really know) Hope this helped!

Well… literally every guitar track on that intro is fuzz, including the clean sounding Bunting guitar part so I don’t know what to tell you.
@chrishepburn15032 жыл бұрын
@@markjohnstonofficial You don't have to tell me anything, just my opinion. Its technically "fuzz" because you are using a pedal that is being marketed as a fuzz pedal but to me the pedal doesn't sound much like a fuzz (or at least one that I like). Call me old school but this just sounds more like a distortion pedal.
@prizmprty64792 жыл бұрын
@@chrishepburn1503 There's different applications for pedals, not always just the obvious use. If you want classic muff tones check out the other videos by Walrus. It very much can sound like traditional fuzz. Mark is just showing how he uses it, since, you know...it's his channel.
