From what I can remember, Roy's old whistle was so much louder than the new one, it was so loud that I could hear it in the Fort Wilderness campground!

@@WaltsNephew Yeah, I know train whistles are indeed loud but I was always curious on why Roy's old whistle was deafening comparing to others (I remember Strasburg 90's whistle not being as loud).

Good question. Honestly, I think it just depends on which engineer you have on a particular day. Some like to let the engine's whistle scream while other just let steam escape haha

I like the different whistle only because this acts as a way to audibly differentiate Roger from the rest

Roy’s whistles were quite a change. It’s a Hancock 3 chime. Sounded to me at first like a Rio Grade 3 chime till it was unclogged in June 2016. Now it has the sound on my ears of a B&O 3 chime. But it’s still only a Hancock 3 chime.

@Pinchy08 That’s not what happened. The Roy had a deep tone whistle that came from a steamboat that has been torn apart a long time ago. This deep tone whistle was originally a temporary whistle while the original whistle wasn’t repaired for a couple of decades. In 2016 the deep tone steamboat whistle was taken off, and the original whistle was put back on. The appearance of both whistles were very different. The original whistle was painted gold when the park opened years ago and is still gold today. The deep tone whistle was coated with a satin black paint, and the chimes on both whistles have different shapes.

The deeper 3 chime (normal whistle too me) is a 4 inch American 3 chime that was originally on the Admiral Joe Fowler riverboat. When the Fowler was scuttled after a dry dock accident, the whistle was put on Roy. For years the high note was plugged off. After Brittons retirement the plug was removed during repair. During the repair the other whistle was on Roy.

@@cple1 That is FASCINATING! I was wondering why her whistle sounded different but was obviously the same one! Do we have any idea as to why the high note was plugged (on purpose or from wear-and-tear)?

Historically, Roy had the loudest whistle until it was recently changed. The other three have always had the buckeye 3 chime whistle. Makes it difficult to tell them apart due to only slight tonal differences.

As of December 23, 2022, the Walt Disney World Railroad has returned! Unfortunately, as early as late January (maybe early February), Roy O. Disney has received a new whistle, although I think it's temporary.

It’s easy to tell the difference between the Walter’s and the Lilly Belle’s whistles. The Lilly Belle’s has a higher pitch to it, and it’s louder than the Walter’s. The Walter’s whistle has a lower tone and it sounds a bit softer.

Nowadays Lilly’s whistle sounds like it’s fallen a little out of tune. It still sounds normal, but when opened fully, it doesn’t really sound like a buckeye 3 chime.
