The footballing world respected Walter Smith. I don't think anyone could have foreseen what he would do for us when Souness left. But 10 titles and 11 cups in two spells tells its own story. He was a great manager and an even better human being. Most of all his blood was blue.

Deeply saddened by the loss of Walter Smith. He was a brilliant football manager and just an amazing leader of men. I’m a Celtic fan, but I’ve been on the receiving end of Smiths brilliance as Rangers manager but I’ve sensed a profound respect from all Celtic fans down the years. My over riding memory of Smith was that he always had class even when his brilliant Rangers teams were hammering Celtic always felt respect and decency were at the heart of everything Smith did. A great man, RIP.

Even with his incredible success with Rangers he always was gracious in defeat and more importantly victory..a definition of class.Certain men like Walter Smith and Tommy Burns transcend the Old Firm divide.
