Walter Payton really was the best. Lots of great running backs but Payton was the best. Not a Chicago fan but he's my favorite player by far and I've seen everyone the past 40 yrs. Just look at him run over player after player. Notice how he hit everyone before going out of bounds. He could run away from them too. And his teammates have repeatedly said he never weighed 200lbs. They couldn't believe his freakish strength in the weight room. His runs show it.

By no means am I a Bears fan but I was a fan of #34 "Sweetness!" This is the best set of highlights which define his greatness that I have ever watched. I found myself so engulfed in fact that I became misty-eyed and longing for a return of the NFL's greatest era. Players of that era played because they loved the game; I am sure they had decent contracts but not like today's players who don't truly love the game but love the fame and money! No other back compares, sorry Adrian Peterson but you are not "Sweetness!" This guy took a pounding but did not sit out games, he brought us highlights week after week! RIP Sweetness from a Raider fan!

RBs today run out of bounds and avoid contact. WP would seek out contact, hardly ever ran out of bounds to avoid a defender. In O vs D drills, Doug Plank said that getting stiff armed by WP was like getting punched, his hands were as tough as horse hooves. The guy would sprint uphill in gravel. Barry Sanders was an amazing (pure) runner, Emmitt Smith had great north/south running, and Eric Dickerson/Earl Campbell/Jim Brown had the power, but none were as complete a back as WP.

Sweetness -- one amazing man! Thanks for doing this video, it's like being able to watch Rembrandt paint a masterpiece. I always heard about those hillside sprint workouts, never saw the footage before -- wow! No wonder he had so much extra power and stability running on the field. Never saw so many broken tackles, people flying everywhere after getting that stiff-arm or whatever he chose to deal out. No stopping this guy. That little number just after 7:50, where he just out-accelerates a mystified tackle blew my mind, and later when he gets knocked out of bounds then just does a back-flip to get on his feet! Just two words for you: Walter Payton.

Today, RB's share reps, run the ball 10 times a game, and typically tear a knee and have to have surgery in their career. It's amazing with his brutal running style how he lasted so long. I swear half of these highlights I'm expecting him to go down with a torn ACL. Teams need to study his workout routine and do it. He's top 2 RB in history (between him and Barry), and I'm a Cowboy fan. Emmitt 3rd :)

He had to practice against that 85' bears defense and I watched the 30 for 30 on the 85' Bears and one of the players said that he would carry there offense and would play his heart out there, also he would have been a way better running back stat wise if he had the offensive line that Emit Smith had that's why he had the stats he had and that shows you how good Walter Payton really was, that he can play without an offensive line and still have the stats he did what a in believable athlete may he R.I.P. pure class. a real man. true warrior. never a show off. an ounce of Sweetness would crush today's NFL. I went to high school with Dan Hampton and count myself fortunate to have witnessed the NFL in its prime.

Without question and unequivocally...and it doesn't matter how many yards any future running backs rush for... Mr. Payton was the greatest running back of all past and future time and there will never be another player that displayed the TOTAL and AWESOME greatness with such vigor and humility. It was my privilege and honor to have been able to witness his greatness. And to his son Jared, who played at The University of Miami.. the most badass college football team of all time.. your dad would have looked great in orange and green..

I've always said that Walter Payton, Jim Brown, and Barry Sanders were the 3 best RB's of all-time. I give Sweetness the edge, because he was able to do the same things as the other two combined, and was a crazy good receiver. He didn't just do wheel routes and screens, either. In his early years, he led some really bad Bears teams in rushing, receiving, and return yards. Living in Alabama and Georgia, you'd think when I see 34 I'd think of Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker, but I think of Walter Payton.

Mr. Payton said to keep from being hurt he ran the ball to hit somebody...NOT to get hit. and as you can see he delivered some blows to opponents.

Sweetness ran with such power but with fluency and grace. He was not afraid to take anyone on...GOAT running back.

Thank you for posting this. This is the best Payton highlight film I've ever seen. I am Chicago born and raised, so I forgive myself if I'm biased. But in my honest opinion, Walter Payton is the greatest athlete in history. His combination of speed, quickness, balance, versatility, intelligence, courage, willpower, leaping, throwing, catching, and kicking skills, and above all his pound-for-pound strength - again the whole combination - are unequaled. Watch this video and see why I say this.
