I am 72. Wow! I have loved jewelry and worked in a high-end precious jewelry store. I always purchased one or two fine pieces a year rather than lots of junk. I also refrained when gold was sky high. It's a commodity that fluxes with interest rates, so when it dipped; I shopped, When it rose; I refrained. Trends are trends. Jewelry is very personal so choose and wear what you will like during your lifetime. Cherish the ones that are passed down to you.

I wear what I want, when I want. I mix gold and silver. I have some jewelry that belonged to my mom, my aunt, my Great Grandmother. When I am going to a special event, I will say: "would you like to come to this dinner party, Auntie?" as I put on a pair of her earrings. Or when I am facing something scary, I will wear a piece from my mom to give me courage. Am I crazy? Maybe, but it works for me. Jewelry is my statement and a lucky charm. Mixed in with vintage jewelry, I have several new pieces I bought myself or my husband gave me. I hope my Granddaughters will someday invite me along to a special occasion when I can no longer wear my pretty jewels.
@o.m.6374Ай бұрын
Wearing items that belonged to loved ones as a way of keeping them close or to bolster our confidence or courage is by no means crazy. Do you know that the energy of the person is carried through the item they wear? As science has told us that energy never dies, the energy of your grandmother and your aunt are still present in those pieces of jewellery you treasure. You can feel them, and I can tell you that those women are happy that you honour them in this small way. Similarly, items can also carry a negative energy if the person they belonged to was in that negative state when they possessed it. I love antiques and things with stories, but I have become wary after understanding how our energy still clings to our items. If I love an antique find, I can usually feel if the energy it holds is good for me, and if I'm not sure, then I either leave it or put it out in to bathe in a full moon light, so as to cleanse away any negativity. Now you must think I'm crazy too. 😇

Lab diamonds are not ethically sourced. Nowadays they’re coming in bulk from India and China and who knows if there’s children cutting and polishing them and they are terrible for the environment by the way they are made. There’s actually diamonds from Botswana Africa that is actually helping their economy you just have to know exactly where your diamond is from. Also there’s diamonds from Canada that are good. So many jewelers bought tons of lab diamonds and they want to get rid of them so that’s why they’re being so hyped up now but I can see lab diamonds going the same way as cubic zirconia and will be sold at Kohls and such. TLDR- there’s good and bad in both lab and mined diamonds. Both are beautiful.

You can have a lot of fun with accessories like jewellery, and they can really update an elevate an outfit, but in my opinion. the colour of gold, whether white, yellow or rose is usually chosen on what is most flattering on your skin, not on what a supposed current trend is, which is what will make a piece enduring and always, always look good on you. There can be trends for finer jewellery pieces or more chunky ones, for chokers or longer necklaces, for stacked bracelets or cuffs for example, and even a momentary leaning towards one metal colour over another, but to say something like rose gold is passé or dated is quite short sighted. There is a big difference between having style and being in style, and the key to knowing how to master both is to recognise objectively what works or doesn't work on oneself.

For years, I've worn what I want in jewelry. I think jewelry is personal. It’s a piece you bought when you were young or a family heirloom. I've bought trendy too. But the pieces I keep coming back to are the ones with special meanings to me. One of my favorites is a small wind-up pocket watch. I bought the watch in Germany as an exchange student. It has a porcelain disc with handpainted pink rose on the oneside. The chain is long and detailed. I still wear it today. The chain broke several years ago, but I was able to repair it with antique links. When I did that, I added several small charms. One represented my older sister, whom I lost when we were children, and also added a small clear charm locket with gold I had panned on a camping trip. The culmination may look dated or out of place, but they have become conversation starters whenever I wear them.

Wear what looks good on your skin tone &/or what you love. Trends come and go so quickly just to line someone's pocket with our hard earned income. I love both rose and yellow gold. Sometimes the trends feel shaming when something is momentarily deemed "out." Let's not shame each other for wearing what we love. I do appreciate how this video is careful to try not to shame people about trends and reminds us to wear what we love.

You just made me very happy. I am becoming very sentimental in my senior years. I just bought a second gold chain to add to a heavy gold necklace that my mother gave me so I can just flip it over my head without struggling with the clasp. Both chains are about the same width but they don't match. I want to wear it with another necklace from her where the three charms rest in my cleavage (they don't show) and the long chain is so fine you can barely see it. I will check my stash for another "wrong necklace" to make an intentional looking group. I have a gold tone lariette necklace that I will try. I do like a long sculptural-pendant necklace on a cord. A carved soapstone or ceramic piece that is unique, maybe from a summer art fair. They are useful against column dressing over a solid dress or matching top and bottom under an open blazer, vest or cardi. It just looks so nice when all the vertical lines complement each other. I had pierced ears, but one ripped and it's never been a priority to get it fixed. My earring box is frozen in time and I have given away some of the better pieces. There is one small pair of posts that I have my mother and then kept when she passed. I no longer have the dexterity to put earrings on myself, but if I just left that one pair on it might work. Either way, I should be able to let go of all my other earrings. I am just too nostalgic. Oj! The burden of storing such tiny things is not so great. I am keeping my collection of long beaded necklaces for future trends and I might venture out and tie one to a purse for a holiday embellishment. If non-matching necklaces are a thing, maybe I'll try a cluster of non-matching rhinestone brooches for New Year's Eve. Back in the 60s, my mother used to pin brooches to those fabric clutches that she would have dyed to match her shoes, gloves and outfit. I sure am glad we don't do that any more. That being said, I still have her dyed cloth clutches in brown, turquoise and pink. The pink matched her second-wedding dress. The matching outfits are all gone, but those clutches have complemented the occasional cocktail dress. I hate spending money on outfits I only wear once a year. 😵💫🥂🍾

There was that trend in the '80s and '90s with Madonna and with a revival of Chanel aesthetics that had pearls and coins everywhere, even as belts, so I suppose this is another rendition of pearls being highlighted again. But honestly, just like those dainty pearl drop earrings you wore, pearls are never passé or dated.

I agree with you about pearls, I purchased my first pearls when I was 23 and I inherited my grandmothers pearls, they are timeless.

They are like the little black dress; always in style.

Do you understand the difference between timeless and current trends? She's talking about current trends. Do you understand the word trends? I think maybe you're too uppity to understand current trends.

@@mindyparker4128 MY goodness, such an unnecessary condescending tone to take with someone...........I do hope that no one treats you in such a rude manner. One thing I do know is good manners NEVER goes out of style, they are timeless and always a current trend..............you should consider investing in some.

@@mindyparker4128 Oh my dear, you should really not make assumptions about people or things unless you have knowledge about them yourself. (If only you knew to whom you were addressing this comment, but I digress ...) Of course there is a difference between current trends or fads and timelessness in the fashion world, and I understand the difference very well. If you were to read my comment again without your judgemental glasses on, you may see that the statement she made was that "pearls are b a c k I n". My comment reflected my amusement that I had never known that pearls were an item that was on the out or passé list. I was simply making an observation on the transient and cyclical nature of trends. There was no put-down or judgement in my comment, much unlike yours.

I’ve always wore exactly what I liked and so far other than the rose gold….which I didn’t like….its always worked……so I usually am about 6 months before the trend . Love wearing my jewelry.

Love the jewelry update videos. I have noticed some of the vintage lines like Sarah Coventry and Avon actually hold up better than the new. I have jewelry from them that still look brand new, not tarnished while some I have bought the past 3 years have already discolored. Watched a documentary from a few years ago on diamonds - they believe that the real diamond market has been infiltrated with lab grown by up to 30%. Most diamonds are cut in India and some cutters take bribes to cut the lab grown- once cut they are very hard to tell the difference.

I’ve always loved, shopped for and worn vintage jewelry. So many pieces are one of a kind and unique. Nothing cookie cutter. I actually have many of my mother’s pieces from the 40’s. But honestly, it sometimes takes me more time to put on my jewelry than either my hair or makeup! 🤦♀️

I’m happy to see this video. I have a lot of jewelry and I’m never sure what to wear. I got diamond studs for Christmas last year from my husband. And I try to wear them if I go anywhere. I’m sure they cost a lot so I’m getting my money’s worth out of them. But I don’t usually wear anything else but them and my wedding ring. Which I just had to replace that diamond when I lost it for the third time. This one is pretty. I have no idea if it’s lab grown or mined. I didn’t ask. I love gold jewelry, I do have a few mixed pieces I wear. I just got out of the practice of wearing necklaces and bracelets every time I go out of the house. But I may have to start again. I just saw on a video the other day. If you’re older and wear turtlenecks or mock necks use should wear longer necklaces to draw attention away from your neck. And I definitely need to do that.

I have some of all of it so I don’t need to buy anything new. The “lariat” necklace was originally called the Y necklace and made famous by Jennifer Aniston on FRIENDS. I have one from back then in 14 karat gold. ✨✨🌟

The long necklaces with a pendant on the bottom are called sautoirs. That style was popular in the 1920’s.

Thanks for sharing this great info! As a handmade small biz jewelry maker/designer it's helpful to see the trends coming up as a buyer sees it, some of which I sort of knew, like pearls, but certainly not to this level of detail, so thanks!
