My grandfather was a merchant marine captain when wwii broke out , he was given a coast guard captains commission ( his merchant marine papers rated him all tonage, all oceans in 1939) and ultimately served both in the Atlantic and later the pacific theaters. While captaining a tranker in the Atlantic he came across a disabled German merchant ship. He rescued the crew at a distance because the German ship wad burning and sinking. When the German ship captain came about my grandfather's vessel, he surrendered his p38 to him A precious piece of history to me

I checked on the Internet; Captain Paul Hanlon passed away on Nov. 24, 1993. He was born on June 11, 1913, he was the son of the late Dr. Edward and Ellen Gillespie Hanlon. He was 80 years old; cause of death was not listed. Nice bring back P-38 pistol Tom.

My grandpa owned 3 bars in the st.louis after ww2. Many of the vets used to pay off their bar tabs with bring backs. My dad inherited several lagers, p38 with holsters, k98s, a Japanese pistol called a nambu and a russian revolver stamped 1904 plus many other firearms. I inherited 3 lagers and a p38, and a m1911 made by Ithaca. I sold the German guns to a collector in mo., and the Ithaca 1911 when I was stationed at Ft.bragg. looking back I wish I kept them. But thing where different many years ago. Back when Mosin nagants where 69.00 bucks, a sks was 79.00 to 125.00, Chinese ak47s 84s where 299.00. Those days are long gone. Good story. Loved the p38s we had.

18:09 I think that's an Iron Cross 1st class because of the pin. The 1st class award was worn on the tunic below the flap of left breast pocket. The 2nd class medal had a neck ribbon and no pin. It was not typically worn except for portrait photos. However, the red, white, and black neck ribbon was worn in the buttonhole.

The bayonet is a so-called parade bayonet. These were chromed. So not blued. The chrome has far gone.

I'm thinking that Iron Cross is a first class. 2nd Class ones had the ribbons attached. That one is the kind that attached to the front left pocket of the uniform. To be worn and shown. Unless the ribbon was discarded. It could've been that the German soldier had the ribbon in the button hole and wore the Iron Cross on his uniform, but I really think it is a 1st class. Just my thoughts. Very neat bring backs, especially the gun. Very nice. Thank you Captain Hanlon for your service.

The ones made earlier in the war had much better workmanship. I have 2 of them and the one made in 42, there were no tool marks on the side of the slides like yours, but after 43, the use of slave labor and rushing made the product inferior. After the war, they tried to make it lighter by using aluminum for the frame. I rather have the all steel ones. I don't know why they added the safety to it, I never use it. It is as safe as a Smith wheel gun, where is the safety for that?? The other best method is Colt's cock and lock, which you cannot do with the P38.
