I love the descending chromatic bass at 00:54. Chopin would also repeat phrases with similar variations. A subtle compositional technique but it makes all the difference.
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
One of my earliest compositional missteps was lazily repeating phrases without any real adaptation or variation, mostly an attempt to just fill a bit of time before moving to the next idea. It's something I'm happy to say I've largely eradicated that from my process.

Hi Laurent, beautiful music ! Do you think about publish your music on platforms like Spotify etc ? How do you record your pieces ? Are you the performer ?
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
@@joaquimbarata-composer9766 interesting you ask about Spotify distribution. I recently attempted that through “Distrokid” but after three weeks have been told that Spotify rejected my submission because they no longer work with Distrokid. So that was a huge waste of time. I’ll try again soon as I’m very keen on uploading Volumes I and II elsewhere. As for my process, I basically spend many hours at the piano recording myself into my DAW just sort of playing nonsense. I then go through what I’ve (very poorly) played and see if I can dig out any ideas worth expanding. From there, the entirety of my work is done with the DAW, sequencing in the piece manually (with occasional trips back to the piano if I reach a creative impasse) and outputting the audio through my piano VST (The Grandeur by NI). Thank you for the comment and the compliment.

What do you use for the notation visuals? I really like what you've done here. As for the music, I like what you've done to the ending. Sometimes, less really is more.
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
SeeMusic - it's a tremendous bit of software. Thanks Sammy, and I agree - the descending arpeggio was certainly a little superfluous.

I still think your third waltz is your best. It's the most original with the strongest overall theme. But this is a close 2nd.
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
The third was my favourite by some distance until Waltz 5 and 7, which I feel have both surpassed Waltz 4.

Very few of these KZbin composed valses provide me that feeling of "authenticity" that this does. You seem to be able to tap into that mid-1800s Austrian vibe with next to no effort and not many can do that, or at least not well. I look forward to your book of valses soon.
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
That's so kind of you. Since my visit to Vienna earlier this year, I have been somewhat obsessed with channelling the likes of Strauss ii when it comes to valse composition. It's a very simple form to write music to so the temptation is always to produce something of a lesser standard.

@@johnpcomposer A John Caruso orchestral adaptation would be an absolute dream for me. I'm open to any and all variations, performances and arrangements of these pieces - especially when it comes to yourself. But I do understand and accept you clearly have far more important works to be focusing on - something I'm very much looking forward to. But the answer is a resounding yes please.
@LaurentSault2 ай бұрын
I recently purchased NI's Orchestral Essentials with the view to arrange some of my music. I'm most of my way through my 4th Prelude but it's really not that good at all. It's going to take me quite some time to learn how to compose for orchestra as it's quite a bit of a jump. I'm also having to learn how to articulate instruments I'm not too familiar with so I'm just nowhere near good enough right now to orchestrate my compositions to any acceptable standard.
@johnpcomposer2 ай бұрын
@@LaurentSault Perhaps after the symphony is done i could give it a go. I have to admit, I have never made an orchestral transcription from a piano score. The only time I ever transcribed a piece for different instruments was adapting a wind trio to strings. So it was one for one with the parts and of course articulations, phrasing and registers had to be changed. I think going to a full orchestra you have to imagine and fill in things as you hear them.

What happened to the insane ending? I think I could actually play this now 😁

I decided to dispose of it. Every time I'd listen back, the ending would just sound sort of robotic and inauthentic. Much better now, and playable!
