We were too young to attend the grand balls of the 19th century. Too young for the swirling gowns and gilded halls where the adults lost themselves in the waltzes of Strauss and the sparkle of crystal chandeliers. But that didn’t stop us-me and my closest friends-from creating our own kind of magic. When our parents were away, we would sneak into their closets, our fingers trembling with the thrill of mischief. There, we would find the most luxurious pieces-silk gloves, jeweled tiaras, and velvet capes-and transform ourselves into characters from a fairy tale. Laughter bubbled up between us as we pulled on layers of satin and lace, the scent of lavender sachets clinging to every fold. Then, we’d steal away to the nearest palace garden. Two magnificent palaces stood side by side, and though we couldn’t enter their grand ballrooms, we could hear the strains of their music floating on the evening breeze. The waltzes seemed to call out to us, beckoning us to join the dance. And so, we danced. Under the open sky, surrounded by rose bushes and ancient trees, we twirled and laughed, our carefree spirits carried by the wind. The moonlight kissed our makeshift ballgowns, and the rustling leaves joined the orchestra of the night. Birdsong and the soft murmurs of nature accompanied our every step, a melody far sweeter than anything played inside those glittering halls. We had no audiences to impress, no rules to follow, and no judgment to fear. Our hearts, light and innocent, reveled in the sheer joy of the moment. I’m certain we had even more fun than the adults in their stiff suits and heavy silks. We were free. To everyone listening to this playlist, I invite you to join us in spirit.
