Easy Solution To Fix Noisy Guitar Pedals

Inexpensive "universal" AC/DC power adaptors can cause all kinds of noise issues. In this video, I'll show a common "problem" I hear about. Once we dig down to the root of the cause we most commonly find that the noise is due to the power supply not filtering the power as much as we need it to in an audio device.

DUDE, my man. Thank you so much for this video. I have a huge chain of pedals, and I tracked down the noise to two pedals. I tried putting in a buffer and a noise gate, but I couldn't get rid of that noise. I watched your video today, and i realized I had 3 different power supplies running through my pedals, all through a daisy chain. Once you said it almost always can be tracked through the power supply, I took out the other two and use my good one, and then attached all the daisy chain connectors to each last connector, and made a huge chain of power connectors, using the same power supply and that eliminated all of my noise from those two pedals. I got almost all my pedals now sounding like true bypass. This video was a huge help, thank you.

Had a pedal that the power supply made noise via DC input jack, but when hooked to the battery snap it was perfectly quiet. Sometimes that may be a solution for certain pedals. The one I had with that problem was digital if that matters. And whether cheap power or not that's what worked for me.

I knew someone who had a similar situation, only difference was his Boss pedals told him to get more Boss pedals. And he listened to them. He was a very happy player for listening to his pedals. I have a feeling that if you do as your pedals say, you'll be a very happy player too.

Another issue u can sometimes have is pedals in both the front end and the effects using the same supply. Some amps the loop and the input jack have a different ground potential and the common power supply creates a ground loop. I always use a separate supply for loop pedals and front of amp pedals. And I've had issues with so called quality pwr supplies too. And times when a pwr supply will run any one pedal fine but when u daisy chain a couple u get noise, then I switched supplies and they chained fine.

The universal one is a multi tapped transformer and the proper one is a digital switching power supply. It's much easier to get higher current from a switching supply than a transformer too. So depending on how many of what kind of pedals you have in your chain, you can really start taxing a transformer one while it's not even halfway loaded on the switcher.

Thanks for sharing this vital info! About 2 years ao I bought an Electro-Harmonix Crayon pedel. Until I ran across your KZbin post the pedal been collecting dust as I thought it was defective, as I was utilizing same old 9volt transformer that I'd been using for years. After watching your video inserted a 9-volt battery into it and it worked fine! I serched in my box of electronic parts and found different 9-volt transformer and pedal works fine with it as well...THANKS!!!

One of the difficulties with wall-warts is that they always come as sealed black blobs. If you purchase one that is not explicitly designed to power pedals, you will likely have no idea just how well-regulated it is, and believe me there are a LOT of ways something can be only minimally regulated, have tons of hum, and still "count" as an AC-to-DC convertor. If they were clear, and you could see that it had/lacked the components that would indicate good regulation and a smooth DC output, or if you could open the box and see a schematic, that would be one thing. But basically the only info a wall-wart is going to give you is how many volts (I'll take 9, please), how much current capacity, and which contact is hot and ground. That's a bit like buying an amp and all you know is that it has a volume control, some sort of speaker, and an "on" switch. Now, having said that, cheap wall-warts you can buy from the "variety box" at the pawn shop CAN be made to provide clean smooth hum-free power with the addition of a few cheap components. But unless you know what you're doing, I'd recommend against it. Besides, as others here have noted, many power-bricks provide decent isolation between outputs, which can be important in today's pedalboards. If you're running a circa-1982 pedalboard, daisy-chain away, my friend. If you have even ONE digital pedal on your board, though, do yourself a favour and spring for a power brick.

I have a daisy chain from a single 9V AC adapter. I observed that I had to put the more power hungry pedals like combo reverb and loopers near the root of the daisy chain to avoid noise.

you can also put ferrite beads on the cord right before it goes into the pedal and that should clean up any noise. You can usually get a 5 pack from mouser or DX Engineering for about 10 bucks.

I have a question, I connected my boss chromatic tuner tu-2 to boss distortion DS-1 to a ISP Decimator II noise pedal to a vox 50 watt combo amp. When I plug em together, I connect my guitar to the tuner that connects to distortion pedal to noise pedal to amp & I get these random radio feedback that dramatically takes over my entire guitar sound & volume to a point I hear the news more clearly than my guitar. What is the issue & what should I do exactly? Is there an order of pedals I should be using instead or? 🤨

I'm glad I watched this video. Switching up all my cheap universal power adaptors for the proper brand name power adaptors of my pedals really does work, all the electrical static noise that I thought was normal all my life is now gone. I also noticed one day that the cheap universal adaptor I was using would arch whenever the 9 Volt cable on the adaptor would touch the metal casing of the guitar pedal, after seeing those sparks I knew I had to stop using them and follow the advice in this video.

Love your channel Brian. So, I’ll play in a church that has light dimmers all over the place. Those dimmers seem to create a lot of line noise and every time I press down on my volume pedal I find out just how much noise there is. Going through a clean power filter helps a little, but I’ve just decided to go through a isolated output, switching power supply from Truetone. I’m hoping that this will quiet down the five petals that now share a common power supply via my boss BCB - 60 paddleboard. Wish me luck!

2/24/24 Bought a Joyo California pedal (recommended by an Ultimate Guitar gear reviewer.) Unusable noise and buzz, but also was using the cheap-ass Joyo version of One Spot. I have used the one spot daisy chain for a while .just upgraded to the truetone cs12 and oh my the noise floor is so much lower that I am considering taking my noise gate off my board as i never turn it on now ..great video all power supplies are not equal .

I too use a CS12... Great power supply for the money. The only drawback is it is huge and heavy... I was getting to the point where 8 was no longer enough, and I didn't want to use 2 power supplies, so I went with the CS12... Works for me.

I use an old Big John multipower supply with 7 output of 9 volt. It's made for guitar and at the time it wasn't expensive but even it's hm... gues a little more than 29 years old , It do the job great . No noise from that powersupply and its strong enough that I can even power my multieffects board too . I really recomend That one , It never let me down on any noise. My multi effects board's power supply was sensitive to ground noise and after just connecting it to the Big John it's completely silent. Yes as you say , some powersupplies is really noisy with guitar pedals despite being silent with other audio stuff.

That is why I start with high signal to noise ratio pickup first. I stick with tube amp distortion. I only use pedals with batteries into the input of the amp. Only modulation & EQ pedal into the effects loop are powered by adapters. Now with high gain, I don't even need to use my noise gate.

1: How about full pedalboard power supplies? There is there so many options. 1Spot, Voodo Labs, Strymon, and so many others. Which one is actually the best? For the sake of reference, I have 8 pedals on my board, so it needs to have enough slots to provide them. 2: What about which single-pedal power cord is best? I am all about amp distortion, so I have the ISP Decimator II in the effects loop to filter out the amp's gain humming. As such, I would like to have the Decimator sitting on top of the amp, on its own power cord. Having that off my pedalboard means I don't need long cables in and out for just THAT ONE pedal anymore. Then my pedalboard can be completely devoted to front-of-amp pedals, such as the tuner, octave, and mids-booster.

I use multiple one spots and the 8 pedal daisy chain works just fine as long as you make sure you don't have any bigger units that draw more power. At that point I'd recommend two, to split up the current.

I have an issue with an EHX Bass Blogger pedal. It's the only pedal in my basic signal chain that does it. Glad I found someone who had the same issue. I thought it was just the pedal (I bought it used from a guy who said it all worked fine). I've tried it with a baterry and it does the same thing but quieter. It's so annoying

Three years later, here's a reply: place your delay pedal (and any reverb or modulation pedals too) in the amp's effects loop, and not in the chain. Sometimes referred to as a "four-wire" layout. Problem solved.

Well thank you for the advice I own a high gain Amp head,so I'm running the head with standard pedals nothing to fancy but im running a boss super OD it was noisy AF after the headache I went through because u were saying I just can't use this pedal because it's making too much darn noise,after swapIng out the pre Amp tubes and changing out the jumper cables to the fx pedals it still made that ugly sound,I was ready to throw this pedal in the lake or use it as a paper weight, I still couldn't find the problem ,I own a power block by acoustic ,darn thing is pretty good and quiet anyways since I'm using the od with the lead channel and the power block has like 12 spots for pedal power I just moved the od plug all the way away from the other pedals and BINGO quiet as a mouse. Now I'm not chunking this pedal anywhere...cheers and thank you ..

i have a metal muff distortion pedal, not the best but it works for me. i am trying to find a way to get rid of the background noise from playing, granted my rooms not large and i play about 6 feet on my amp so maybe my pickups are.. well... picking up the amps tones as well, thoughts? I'm having problems with a tube screamer by Demon. It's around 30-60 euros (amazon). This ts copy is literally whistling when settings are at their minimun. Uses any 9v ps. Got a boss PSA-230S power supply (9v). I wonder if any tweaks can be done to this pedal. i only use it with a noise-gate pedal.

Hi Mark. Same pedal, same problem here. I built a pedalboard, and the Demon altough is a very good clone, makes a lot of noise, even turned off. I use 3 adapters with daisy chains for 7 pedals. The adapters I use are from Donner, and they have worked great, and the Demon when is pluged without the daisy chain, is almost quiet, with the normal hum an overdrive creates, but there is a looper pedal I have that needs its own power supply or it becomes a noisy nightmare, so the Demon is used with the Daisy chain. I just bought two other pedals (a buffer and one reverb) so I bought another adapter. This time I bought a Dunlop adapter to feed only the Demon believing that because the adapter was from a great company it was going to work better than the Donner ones. Honestly, was a waste of money (for now, hoping that it works with the new pedals that I haven't tried) . It makes a really anoying noise, I believe like the one you describe, and the solution was to stay with only the Donner one plugged in the Demon. If you have the oportunity, try the Donner adapter before buying it. (Sorry if there are some mistakes. English is not my first language).

I use maybe 4 OneSpots to power my board and it works GREAT. I use a dual 300w output solid state bass amp and dial it in and I rarely have any noise and what noise there is there is very little of it.

Noise is the bane of my existence. Great little tip vid. My biggest issue right now has to do with recording using my DAW/PC. Somehow my PC itself is proving to be a source of noise and it’s sort of weird. I’m using a Focusrite 2x2 monitored through my amp (which is setup to act more like a monitor). I don’t start getting much noise until I power on my PC. Oddly though, when I start my DAW (Reaper) the noise kicks up several notches. Even with a blank slate in the DAW (i.e. no amp sims or VSTs or anything loaded). I only have an integrated sound card. I’d consider getting a higher end sound card but I’m concerned it won’t help if the PC itself is the source of the noise. Not being able to do decent quality recordings is bumming me out.

It's a ground issue most likely. Using an UPS as a filter for your AC line noise may help. Or you can use one of those ground lift adapters from the hardware store or wal mart that takes a grounded 3 prong socket and omits the ground to be just a 2 prong plug on the other side.

Probably best to keep the Grounds connected on the AC plug and use an isolation transformer on the signal line between the pieces of equipment. Would it be possible to make a video on pedals "popping" when they're engaged/disengaged, what causes it and how to troubleshoot/fix it? I've just built a board and basically, all of my pedals make a popping noise when I switch them on/off and it doesn't go away by repeatedly switching them on and off like some suggest works, at stage volume switching on my wah is like a shotgun going off. I'm using a strymon zuma power supply so I'm pretty confident it's not a power issue, going into a hotrod deluxe. My two strymon pedals (bigsky/timeline are in the effects loop with everything else (friedman gold 72 wah>Polytune2>ernie ball volume pedal 40th anniversary>Keeley D7M drive> friedman be-od deluxe>ceriatone centura) going straight to the front of the amp. The only pedal that's not popping is the centura at the end but it doesn't pop no matter where I put it, I'm thinking this might be to do with the buffer but I'm honestly stumped. :(

Most likely it's due to lack of a resistor pulldown on one of the pedal outputs, or it could be due to aging and leaking capacitors. Either way, it's basically DC power going through your pedals and into your amp. Getting something like a Lightningboy or similar isolation transformer at the end of your chain would kill it, but it's really more of a bandaid solution. Buffers seem especially prone to causing this problem. I've got one that leaks 9 mV of DC on its output, and it will make the next pedal over pop.

Everybody talks about buzz, hum, hiss ... no one talks about loud swirly noise. I have a distortion pedal (Honey Bee Amps Tornado Jam) that is unusable because of the noise. I have isolated it to this pedal and experimented with everything ... different power leads, different patch cables, into a GigRig Quartermaster, direct into amp, all home lights switched off. All my other pedals are fine. This one sounds like a swirly spaceship taking off. The pedal is new. Oh, and the power supply is a Strymon Zuma. Any thoughts?

you can turn every 12v noisy power supply into a regulated 9v with 3 components. I been modifyng cheap 12v linear unregulated power supplies into 9v regulated for friends for a couple of dlls in parts and they work great daisy chaining, there is no need to buy isolated outputs 200dlls power supplies, unless you have one of those picky pedals that really need to be isolated from the others but to isolate everything for a high price is unnecessary and you are entering levels of madness compared to audiophiles.

Thank you! Just bought a Boss CS3 compressor second hand and it had a bad noise especially with the sustain turned up even a little bit. Using a daisy chain adapter never had a problem before. Changed it to a single adapter and noise gone! I thought I'd wasted £50. X

I have a Wampler Tumnus, which I LOVE the sound of , but it produces a loud hiss through all my amps. I have high end cables, Onespot CS6 isolated power supply and Furman surge protector. The Ibanez tubescreamer on the same board is much quieter but doesn’t sound nearly as good as the Tumnus. Is the loud hiss inherent of a klon-like circuit or is my pedal possibly defective? The hiss isn’t a huge problem when playing live with a band, but at home and while recording it’s really noticeable.

I have marshall pedals which are bluesbreaker and compressor. When i use them together there is always a noise. Individually use has no problem. What is the problem? Thanks.

Great, but what if you use a Cioks power supply and one of your pedals hums? Can a pedal be shielded or grounded?

Pedals are already shielded and grounded generally, via the jacks and sometimes pots.

I have no pedals yet. Instead it is my guitar that is noisy. I think it may be my Lace Alumitone pickups. I have a Richmond Dorchester into a Boss Katana 50 Mk II. I arrived here at this video looking for ideas. Perhaps a noise gate would help? ALSO: Since I have not started my pedal collection yet, would not a Wampler Terraform be a good start so I can tweak things analog style?

Hi Brian, This video was from a year ago so I don't know if you will even get this....Sadly I live 1/4 of a mile from an AM radio tower and some pedals I unfortunately get will get AM radio bleed over. (Talk radio bleeding through when you engage the pedal). I purchases a green ringer clone that I am getting talk radio bleed through. I even upgraded my power supply to a Voodoo Labs Power plus 2. (All isolated outputs) I had a pedal like this a while back and a buddy was able to fix it by putting in a resister...... I believe it was a 10K. I am great with soldering but don't have any electrical knowledge as far as reading electronic specs. For a novice do you know of anywhere I can get an actual picture diagram or even a photo like fender or Duncan does to wire a guitar pickup in? If I could obtain something like this I would be good to go. Thanks for your help in advance! I got the pedal for $50 and my local amp repair guy charges $75 .... I hate to dump this pedal off my board! Chuck

hey Brian, I have a nice (and cheap) delay I like but it does a big POP whenever I activate or deactivate the footswitch. do you think I should try replacing the switch altoguether? or just forget about it?

mcniac It's completely normal. Just a capacitor discharging. You could use it along with an fx loop or a line selector and that way the delay would always be on

Pull down resistors may not be present, and could be added before C1 to ground and after last capacitor in the effect circuit. The switch itself may also add noise if it’s a really rough switch. But adding resistors directly before and after first and last caps connected to ground (maybe 1M ohm or so) should solve this

I just bought a Wampler Pinnacle off Ebay (I know I should buy new but I'm not exactly loaded!), I've just had it plugged in (Fender Bassbreaker 007 using the humbucker on my Reverend Double Agent), it sounded fine until I switched on the boost, I only had the gain at 12:00 but the loud buzzing sound was a real shock! It sounded like really noisy single coil pickups :-( Have I been sold a dodgy pedal? When I'm playing it's the dream tone but the noise when I stop is unacceptable to me. My other pedals are fine (if I swap the Pinnacle in the chain for my Boss DS-1 the noise vanishes!), fyi - I use an MXR Brick for power.

My Ibanez GE 9 EQ pedal creates some hiss no matter if I use my ac power or battery. Is that just the pedal. Is there something ( pedal?) I can place after it to cut the hiss without killing the tone?

I have a problem that i feel like i med to click a lot of pedals if i for example want to go from a clean Sound with some chorus and then a dirty lead Sound with an eq, Delay and reverb. Do you have any tips on that or am i just lazy?

What about the Hum-X and/or adding a RF choke on the power wire on the adapter? I use to take apart old tv s and take the chokes out of them to use on my guitar and Ham radio equipment. I currently use an older MXR power brick that's worked great for me! Your videos are great, keep it coming!

I have a pedal that actually squeels when you turn up the level or gain tryed 2 different power supplies and it still squeels.. It squeeled when i first got it.. Changed the power supply and it seemed to stop.. after like 5 minutes i packed it up and havent used it for months since then. Took it out yesterday and tried 2 diff. power sups and its back to squealing again.

can you advise me .... my OCD V2 has the same bad shielding im guessing? electrical hum however im running into a walrus audio phoenix power brick ... as far i am aware its not the power brick everything else mostly runs nice ... ? dynacomp is a bit noisy ... seems to be anything thats boosting the noise floor?? suggestions is it the power brick ?

That's a decent power brick. Could it be faulty? Have you tried a noise gate?

I have two pedals. A ac tone amp sim and a rangemaster clone. Guitar and my amp alone with or without built in gain is silent. With effects (guitar, t boost, amp sim into Blackstar 10W) USING 9V ONLY I GET LOADS OF HISS. Yes the hiss decreases when I turn down the gain on either or both effects, but it only goes totally away when in bypass. I need moderated gain to achieve sustain and tone that I want. Any ideas?

Great video man, I just have some questions left. How does using ground electrity translate to this? I know for instance if you don't have good quality speaker cables, an ungrounded pc can create noises and crackles, by moving the mouse. I am quite new to the realm of pedals, t one thing I notice is, that the distortion can create a short or airy noise, even when no sound is going through, and the noise redux is at max. Dist off is no to hardly no noise at all. My question is, is that an artifact of old gear/ or distortion pedals in general? Coming from the digital DAW world, I noticed that the pc has one ' advantage', it hardly knows any noise, compared to working with (old) gear

My pedalboard is pretty silent. I use the One Spot CS 12 power supply. The only pedal I have a problem with is the Timmy OD. GAIN down, no noise. Turn GAIN up, noise is louder as gain is turned up. Very annoying. What’s up with that???

My local guitar shop sold me a “Snark” AC adapter, which works well to cut the noise, but for some reason my TC Electronics HyperGravity compressor is noisy, especially with sustain turned up. Is this common with compressors?
