The only thing is that ".zip" files aren't unsafe to open, they are pretty much folders. ".exe" and such files are the ones you shouldn't run, bad files are sometimes disguised as file.zip.exe, or the executable is inside the zip file. Still though, it's very weird to get a "game" in a zip file, it's sad that people fall for these
@caesural3 жыл бұрын
@asdrubale bisanzio Really? I stand corrected, I guess. I did look this up before posting that, mostly because I'd never heard about zip files being able to install phishing malware just by unzipping, and everything I'd found said zip files are absolutely safe to open. Now that I look it up again, I see that in the past some programs or ecosystems had vulnerabilities that could be exploited by unzipping a file. But I still couldn't find the vulnerabality that would install malware just by unzipping a file, I still don't see how oppening a random zip file could possibility install phishing malware, enlighten me?
@NorokVokun3 жыл бұрын
@asdrubale bisanzio yeah I for my part always turn file extentions to be shown. Mainly because I often mod singleplayergames (and fine tune graphics) through .ini files and so on, and for that it is quite helpfull to have the extentions shown. And I definitely will keep doing it as like you mentioned it can help make "sneakiely" disguised .exe malware-files (like the .zip.exe you menationed as example) as blatant as the sun in the sky.

i dont own any side business but i still get these scam emails for various "service" that i had "sub" to, like apple/netflix/etc/etc
@LordAsteroth3 жыл бұрын
The main reason that the scammers try to take conversation to a third party messaging system right away is because messages through them are more deniable than email. An email is, at least marginally, solid evidence of what they have said. Whatsapp is a lot less dependable, and I doubt has the same distinct routing info to prove the source of messages. Thus, harder to use as evidence when you try to use legal means to reverse whatever they are trying to pull, or seek retribution or restitution through the law.

When I was 8 years old I was the victim of this kind of scam. It was for "a beta key" for some random game that I was into at that age. They made fun of me and scared me with pop-ups. They wanted around 1000$ to "give back the acces to the pc". But I just reinstalled the windows.. the good thing was that at that age I did not have something valuabe on pc.

To the whatsapp thing: In european countries, like germany (its like that here and I think its based upon an EU law) it may actually be illegal to use whatsApp as an official way of communication in the company, like business phones aren't technically allowed to have them even installed

"I honestly don't know how scammers can spoof emails like this" It's incredibly easy to just put whatever e-mail address you want as your "sender". All you need is access to any e-mail server (which can just be your own as well) and send the e-mail via api where you can just put in whatever you want for any field (which also includes the "sender" / "from") of the e-mail. Some E-Mail Servers check against that and prevent stuff like that. But thats why you can just use your own and deactivate any security measure that would prevent that from being send (if they were active in the first place).
@SystemSearcher3 жыл бұрын
Man, this reminds me of a recent time when I got a random "scam" that was so crappy that it didn't actually function as a scam. Some person messaged me on Discord, saying that they accidentally reported my Steam account... and then did absolutely nothing with that knowledge. No "contact this address/person", no nothing. Just a blank statement and a screenshot. Like... *how* was that supposed to even work?
@skywardsoul11783 жыл бұрын
They've tried that on me twice. Red flag before they even started talking. They usually say that you need to talk to a steam moderator or whatever that puts you through some process or link that lets them steal your login.

Nice informative video, i'm not even a content creator really, and i've gotten some things in my email that'll say stuff like they've hacked into my webcam and will release "embarrassing footage" to my family and friends unless i pay them, or ones that say my password, there was some suspicious activity on my email, like signing up for things and getting emails about things i don't use, or changing stuff on my accounts for things, or emails in a different language in my sent mail that i didn't send, or other emails in different languages, or trying to get into my account from a different location, i think i got it under control now, none of the accounts had any money or anything and i moved to a different email anyway, but i'm not sure, around Dec 2020 i actually stopped getting emails all together, which is also kind of weird, except for 2 emails labeled "beyond next month" which shows 2 emails with dates from the future, so not sure what that's all about.

I actually have an example of someone who had tried scamming me using facebook messenger. So for context: i really only have one old friend then family and family friends on facebook then a few people my brother, mother etc know. I don't actually use facebook very often tho tbh. Anyways, back to the tale: so here i am watching youtube and suddenly my brother messages me. The message is just ya usual like "hey bro" or whatever. Nothing phishy (pun intended) at all about it. But as they sent more and more messages i got more and more like "uh huh... I ain't believing ya bs." And eventually i send them an message more or less saying "I'm sorry if this is actually you, bro, but ya giving me all kinds of bad vibes." And i eventually get in touch with that very same brother irl and he ends up confirming it was a scam. Had gotten hacked and he had to make a new account. It was the part in the messaging where "he" started mentioning gaining lots of money or whatever it had been that had made me sus as heck of it. Now fast forward a good few months, and an old family friend had messaged me with a similar scam, having also been hacked. This one i asked my mom about tho cuz it still made me sus but i was far less certain cuz unlike my brother i haven't seen this person in years. She ends up confirming my suspicions that it was a scam. But it was the same "free money if go here" scam basically as before but different face. Thankfully, far as i know, these are my only times dealing with it. That second one definitely was a lot less certain tho for me, which scares me a bit.

Hey Wander, great vid! Sadly, it's actually pretty terrifying how easy it is to spoof an email. Around a decade ago I was working on a web app for the company I worked for at the time, and while implementing the email component of the app, it seemed like the library I was using could literally send an email as anything I wanted, so I tried using "thepresidentoftheunitedstates@thewhitehouse.gov" as a test, and it worked... Fast forward to present day, it's even easier than it was back then... ::cold sweat:: Honestly, it's so easy to spoof legitimate email addresses that I think the reason phishing scams are so obvious must be due to some kind of legal loophole that makes the practice ok so long as the email is different enough that the onus passes to the recipient instead of the scammer. Might not be the case, but it's the only reason I can think of. Keep up the great work!
