Casio Protrek/Pathfinder PRW 2500-1 In Depth Review

I have been looking for an ABC watch to take hiking with me for some time now. I was going to go with the PAW 1500 but figured it would be too large on my wrist. So I started looking at the Casio Protrek PRW 2500, which was close to the size of the PAW 1500 but just a little smaller. I also liked the look of the home screen on the PRW 2500 better.
In this video I take you though the different screens and functions of the watch, as well as give my thoughts on different things that that I liked or did not like. I also do several size comparisons to give you a better idea just how big the watch is.

This is a terrific mini description about this watch. I bought one just the other day. I like it a lot. The tide part requires some user knowledge for proper calibration from the government tide chart issues. As for the altimeter it should have been mentioned that it is barometric pressure sensitive, and will require to be reset to reference at times. Where I live we use the metric system. The altimeter is working in 5 Meter increments, which is about 17 feet. This is close enough for someone going up in to mountains where they are going up some hundreds of meters or some thousands of feet. Your review is very much appreciated, and it did show me a few very good pointers about this watch. I have a some other models of Casio Pro Trek series of watches. The different models each bring out a sort of different approach in the way of using them. The ones I have are all very good watches.

There a many factors that play into the watches ability to grab a signal. How far you are away from the origination of the signal, trees, power lines, ect. All I can say is this watch has not had any issues and even does a little better then my GW 9100-1.

Great review, thanks. I have watched a few different reviews and seems each movement of the comp ring are different one was tight others turn with ease, they should all be tight so not to change a setting if bumped. I wish you could set the home screen set with comp displayed instead of the tide, I live several hundred miles from any ocean,. Last thing I’m buying this watch to hike, hunt and many other challenging outdoor adventures and if it gets a scratch or a bunch of scratches so be it that’s the way it is no matter what it’s made of.

There is one battery in the watch that is recharged using solar power. If the watch is not exposed to light then the watch will just slowly drains the battery.

First nice review , I have 4 ABC watches ( PAW1300 , PAW1500 , PRW2500 and PRG270 ). The only one that doesn't show the ALTIMETER GRAPH increments is the PRW2500. All the others show the reading as well as the altimeter increments. I wonder why Casio left this out of this watch. Meanwhile the graph area is blank in the altimeter mode.

The moon data is actually tided to the calendar date info which is already programmed in. My buckle is not stainless steel. It is made of some type of metal but I am not sure as to what type it is. It does not feel too cheap to me, but I could be wrong.

Press the ALTI button to turn it on. The Press and hold the button till you see hold and the altimeter number blanks out. Then Press the Adjust button which will zero it out. Let me know if that works for you.

Have you taken the watch to a higher elevation to see what the reading was? Also where did you purchase the watch from?

The atomic feature would not. No g-shock would. The locations of the atomic Radio-controlled towers are no where near that. So really if you like the watch and can live without that you are set. If you need an atomic watch you might be out of luck. G-shock and Pathfinders do keep really good time. Only losing something like on 1/2 of a second every few months.

+fanjapanischermusik I have two Casio watches that have this style of charging. I have not really seen any noticeable decrease in the overall battery capacity. Both still still show the level as high. I tend to use the power saver mode which might help with that. Even if they do start to have decreased battery capacity you can always just get a new battery for it.

50/50. They are made both in Japan and Thailand. Both are legit PRW 2500. As far as I know there is no way to order a watch that is made in a particular country unless you are buying second hand and the seller tells you.

Yes it should last you long time. I have a G-Shock Watch with a similar charging system and I have had it for over 5 years now. The way this watch works is it runs off a rechargeable battery. There is a small solar panel built into the face of the watch. This charges the battery. The watch can operate for 5 months on full charge. Meaning no exposure at all to light the watch will run for 5 months. 23 months if you have the power saving options turned on. The battery can also be replaced if needed. World time is just meant so you will know at a glance what time it is in another area in the world. It is not really about what is the furthest time zone from you. You can cycle through and pick the one you want. If you live in CA but what to know the time in NYC you can pick that as your world time. City code should be UTC, you do not live in NYC.

Everything good except for that painted metallic bezel. Scratches come every now and then if at all you use it in the outdoors. And never think about taking it for a trekking or a hike if you want to see the watch in all its nice looks. I guess G Shocks are best for that purpose and precisely the mud master series.

It's not a toy...only you need to understand the limitations and conditions of use... Thermo... the heat of your body is about 36.6 *C - so any sensor of temperature on your whist will surely "feel" your heat. Remove the watch for 2 min will give you the correct temp... Scratches... Who attempt to climb with the watch on hand?... exept the commercials?...;P

watch + water = OK but watch + heat + water = problems (rubber seals go too squishy and distort because of expansion). steam is the worst! Always check the recommended ambient parameters for your watch in the instructions. Then your expectations will be based on the engineering functional design specification. These watches are great.

Well I did get this watch many years ago. I have been on the look out for a newer one. Just still have not seen one that I liked as much as this one.

@@Wanderer001_Reviews That's because Casio has hasn't any others like this! I wish they would dam update its softwear and sensors to the V3 higher resolution ones! This is the only protrek with the lot but it's slow in comparison to V3 casios

Terrible paintwork on the bezel. Literally any contact with any kind of obstacle (wood, stone or metal while hiking, or plastic interior in the trunk of a car while packing the stuff) will leave a paint loss. Thermometer is completely useless when watch is on the hand, while altimeter needs frequent calibration. I would say more a toy than a convenient measuring device. Good for kids and play.

FedReserv I must agree I have the titanium version of this the bezel is heavily discolored but I could still read the directions

And that's a problem why? Really I have the GW9400-1 and after setting it up I have never looked at the sunrise sunset option, the sun rises early in the morning and sets in the Evening that's pretty much all I need to know.

Sí, la iluminación podría haber sido mejor . Pero para mantener la luz de nuevo en 20 minutos para el video habría sido difícil . A medida que el vídeo continúa hice mejorar en inclinando el reloj de manera que se puede divisar la cara mejor.
