One of my favourite projects of the 2023. Titled "Wanderers", this performance work commissioned by the National Gallery Singapore for their Gallery 8th Anniversary & inaugural Pinnacle and Distinguished Service Award Ceremony consists of 3 parts (i Lost in Time, ii Entrapment, iii Symphony) accompanied by choreographed movement, celebrates the theme of HeARTtful Connections and is inspired by the artworks Gamelan Orchestra by Sudan Kerton, Riot by Lim Hak Tai, Horizontals I by Choy Weng Yang.
The piece explores shifts of the artists' identities and belief in their way of expression over time. I thought the theme of Wanderers connects not just the stories of these various artists presented in the galleries, but also the themes of Declarations and Dreams and HeARTful connection, which is the theme of the event. The 3 parts depict the conflicts of heart and mind of the Artist, expressing one's internal and external struggles, the feeling of being displaced in time and space, but ultimately finding peace and symphony with life itself, with the realisation that there exists infinite possibilities.
When creating the piece, I wrote the following lines below, which I felt captures the essence of the story we are trying to tell:
"We wander not just because we are lost, but so that we can find who we are,
We wander so that we can dream,
We wander because we are finally free”
It was a true pleasure collaborating with Suenne Megan Tan and her team Rachel Oh, Nurdiana R. and Kirthiga Subramaniam. Thank you for your incredible support of the creation and the process!
