One of my favorite tracks ever by the greatest of all Trek composers.

Greatest of *all* movie composers, period. None of the others could rival his versatility.

@@soylentteal Hi mate, you want to look up some of the older ones like Franz Waxman and especially Bernard Herrmann. You may be pleasantly surprised.

@@josjanssen6733 Hi pipo. Oh yes, I knew Herrmann well. He was Goldsmith's mentor and *incredibly* prolific (especially as Hitchcock's composer of choice) and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was one for the ages, but IMHO, pupil surpassed teacher when placed side by side. To be fair, genres that Goldsmith knocked it out of the park with barely existed in BH's heyday I'm nothing like as familiar with Waxman, but on your say-so, I will follow up on learning more about his work.
@josjanssen67334 жыл бұрын
@@soylentteal Never knew that Goldsmith and Herrmann were personally acquainted. Thanks for that bit. Your observation of the existance of different genres is also spot on. Mind boggling to think what Herrmann would have made of a Star Trek or Goldsmith of a Hitchcock. We'll never know alas. Have a nice day mate.

Capricorn One reference at 3.28. It's a very sweet pastoral theme with Goldsmith's typical pared back style and excellent orchestration.
@PetersonZF3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are a few callbacks to Capricorn One in this score. I have a Goldsmith CD I made for the car and I put the two themes back to back for that reason. :)

This soundtrack for me is the Definitive TNG era soundtrack. Personally - I like the movie too which is a bonus. But something in the music for this is very melancholy, but hopeful. I often wish they could incorporate elements of this soundtrack for the Picard series. Especially Track 16 - No More Questions - that track embodies Picard - the flute and it has this reflection on the past, but hope for the future reflecting the scene it is attached to - live for the moment.

I totally agree. I also think that Jerry Goldsmith is the *definitive* Star Trek composer. This is one of his more amazing scores, out of a whole career of amazing scores! One of the things I'd suggest--if you want to do it--is listen to this soundtrack in close conjunction with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Both are by Goldsmith and both embody the Star Trek ideals of grandeur and hope. However, I totally agree that this is probably the definitive TNG Era Star Trek.

I shall do so! I don't like being the negative, however I was bitterly disappointed with Picard. Listening again to this soundtrack and imagining what could have been a wonderful send off t o the character. His defence of the Romulans. This theme, but with the Nemesis synth occassionally. To show the old Picard who was reconciled vs the Nemesis Picard who felt responsible for the Romulans, even though Shinzon was not him. The synth also an audio clue as to his Borg trauma, just as a soundscape...subtextual, not played out on screen. He could have been Shinzon. But he is a peacemaker. Not a warrior. He could... Damn it should aid them. It could have been a great character piece, but... But Goldsmith was the un appreciated glue that holds the different shows together. It inspires me to this day.

David R Lentz, USA My favourite of the Star Trek motion pictures, and the best score in all Star Trek! From 0:51 to 3:01 is some of the sweetest motion picture scoring of all time! Also, I really like Anij (Donna Murphy) all the way round: bright, serene, no-nonsense, deeply kind.

I swear the soundtrack from this movie could have very well inspired Goldsmith to figure out the theme for The Mummy released the next year. Nearly the Son’a theme is almost identical to Imhotep’s theme and a bit of O’Connell’s adventure theme. And yes I know both movie soundtracks were scored by Goldsmith himself.

So odd that the Left and Right stereo channels are reversed on this version. And missing the zipping synthesizers just before the Enterprise theme comes in.

@@manu_will Relatability of message is also a core piece of Star Trek. If it's so preachy no one gets it or it drags on, then it lacks that.
