I had this done, not by Lippert, but another company, and it's the best upgrade I've done to the fifth wheel. One thing I might mention, depending on your brake controller in the truck......I had problems with the controller indicating that the brakes were not connected ( a warning light on the controller). It didn't show up right away, it took a while. The solution was to add a heavy wattage resistor to the trailer wiring to simulate the higher resistance that drum brake coils are. Since the disk brakes don't have those coils, it fools the truck brake controller. Maybe Mel installed one with the install.
@WanderingWeekends4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Kilgore glad you like them! Mel didn’t mention any issues that might occur. Burnished the brakes in and put around 100 miles on the trailer the day after he finished. No issues and the brakes are great. Smooth as silk!

@@WanderingWeekends Could be the particular controller that I have. Mine is a Tekonsha P3 controller, and it could be the only type that has this issue. And it could be that only a certain percentage of them exhibit the problem. Enjoy your brakes, especially down those 7 percent grades and emergency stops.

Most controllers need to be TOLD it's hydraulic brakes. I have several genisus controllers and there is a setting for hydraulic, vacuum, electric brakes. You get what you pay for so that's why I only buy Kelsey Hayes controllers
@tkilg71694 жыл бұрын
@@1towmater1 Thanks, but my Prodigy controller also has the setting for that, and it is set correctly. It actually worked initially and later intermittently would get the error on the screen of the controller.........one thing I should mention is that the brakes actually were working even though the error would indicate that the controller was not connected. The added resistor solved these problems. But, again it might just be for the Prodigy controllers, with Dodge Ram trucks of a certain year, and in certain conditions. I'm not saying that a lot of people will have issues, but that's just what I personally experienced after the disk brake upgrade.

What is the spacing of your axles center to center? I did not notice any info of the shackle length needed for the LCI Road Armor suspension. I found out the hard way that with the 6" spacing of the lower two bolt holes on the LCI system that you need the longer shackles since the spacing on the original system is 8" and will not work with the short shackles. LCI does not include this info in the instruction that come with my Road Armor EQ but I did find updated paperwork online that does not talk about wheel spacing it only shows an optional part number 862878 from Lippert that DOES NOT include any brass bushings. I still have NOT found a video for the Road Armor EQ system that talks about needing to identify wheel spacing to determine shackle length requirements.

We have a GD295rl 5th wheel, I couldn't agree more with your statement, although we run timbren on the tow vehicle for piece of mind instead of airbags, on the trailer we couldn't use shocks either so we opted for sumo springs. Night and day difference on the handling. The sumo springs act as a shock absorber in a sense by cushioning the ride, they help with compression more than rebound but the really calm down the trailer. After install on all 4 corners I pulled the trailer 50 miles over different roads with a plastic cup 3/4 full of water on top of the kitchen island, it was still there when the test was over with none spilled. From the factory we have CRE 3000, wet bolts, HD shackles. With the addition of the sumo springs the trailers seems to ride on air! The sumo springs and the crossmember braces from morryde not only stiffened the sway in motion, the combination helps when stationary

Following a couple of other youtube channels that have upgraded slightly heavier trailers, they added reinforcement to the bracket holding the end of the leaf springs. My assumption is that the improved braking puts more force on this backet and it may become the weakest link. Because the imagine is on the lighter side, maybe not an issue, but did you discuss this with Mel, or does anyone have additional information if reinforcing the bracket/weldments is necessary on a 9500lb reflection? Mel didn't mention it on this mod... and I trust Mel for sure. He was looking for issues that may arise. The shackles are a good example. He suggested longer shackles and Lipperts lead engineer agreed. The shorter brackets were placing undue stress on the springs. Glad to have that improvement.

@christianh.84084 жыл бұрын
Why do you oversees don't use automatic trailer brakes? Here in europe all trailer between 750kg and 3500kg have brakes with get acuated when the trailer starts to push. If the trailer is unloaded it only brakes a little, when loaded the brakes start to brake harder until the tires lock up. There is no brake controller or something like that needed
@WanderingWeekends4 жыл бұрын
We call those surge brakes... very common here. Surge brakes are inferior in my opinion. The system lags and literally doesn’t brake until the trailer pushes the tow vehicle forward. Generally surge type systems don’t produce the higher PSI’s found in the hydraulic systems. Uncomfortable and less braking ability... that’s why we don’t prefer them.
@christianh.84084 жыл бұрын
@@WanderingWeekends if it is setup rigth they dont really push the tow vehicel and the main reason for us using that type is that we only need a tow hook and an ligth plug to tow up to 3,5t and the most cars can only tow up to 2t and on that load these brakes work really good

Why must the shock be at a 50-60 degree angle? I'm curious - trying to learn here. I've seen suspension books call out a vertical shock at a 90 degree angle to the bumps it is responding to is 100% efficient. A shock at a 50-60 degree angle is between 55-75% efficient at controlling the same bumps (or the shock valving would have to be stiffer to do the same as the vertical shock). Care to comment or teach me?
@WanderingWeekends4 жыл бұрын
Above my pay scale! You’d need to contact the engineers at Lippert for that type of info. I’m just a hillbilly with a camper 😊
@keshmo124 жыл бұрын
I think all pickup trucks do 1 shock forward and 1 shock backwards at probably a 60 degree angle. I always assumed why they do it is because your axle actually moves forwards and backwards when the suspension cycles and if your shocks are vertical they don't help with that motion. So probably for handling purposes.
