When this song was a hit it was 1984. I was 29 at the time, dreading turning the dreaded Big Three-Oh. But now, 38 years later, here I am, still breathing, doing great and wondering what I was so worried about. And now, to see this video after so long it's quite a treat to realize how good life can be.

I say 1984 was the best year for music. Period. Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Thompson Twins.... And all the Italio Imports. Those really were the Days.

Unlike today when you have a plethora of software synths for a bargain. And back then you could hear the same DX7 and TR808 and other famous machines' presets everywhere. How about: One wasn't so used to the sounds and, as an upright teenager, doing substances and bonking and dancing and not giving a fork? (Although: Style-wise, yes, far more variety back then. Golden age!) ( ^^)v

This was one of my favorite songs from the 80's. In fact, this song instantly makes those of us who were alive back then think of the 80's. And when MTV was actually worth watching (i.e., playing MUSIC instead of the reality show crap it plays today), this video got a lot of airplay. Ah yes...I love thinking back to my teen years. LONG LIVE THE 80'S!!!!!

Damn I love 80's music videos. They weren't afraid to just take some strange idea and run with it. It's great that such experimentation was visible and mainstream back then. They weren't boring back then. an 80's music videos is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

I love how songs like this always pay homage to that old place you spent most of your youth at, now nothing more than a crumbling crypt with nothing but the ghosts of days gone by holding the walls together. We all had that special place we loved. You walk by it, or drive by it and stop to look at it, and your heart fills with the joy of your old memories of the good times you had, but your eyes fill with tears as your realize those days are gone. After a brief reflection of the old days, you smile and move on with a renewed vigor, knowing that it was better to have had those old days and good times, than never to have had them at all, and you realize how much time really has gone by, as we must find a way to deal with the fact that we aren't kids anymore. Such is the dilemma for us all...

+Kain Nosgoth Your commentary captures the mood and zeitgeist of this song perfectly, as well as the challenge for those of us who were there in the 80s now having to reckon with our looming mortality.

Prairie Wolfdog Thanks, friend. I was there in the 80's too, as I now clock in at 51. I always was very sentimental about the old places is used to hang out at when I was a kid, and be they still there or under a new name, or an old deserted building, my heart still longs to go thru them "just one more time" to look at the place or to just hang for a moment and remember everything that happened in a room or corner of the place. For that reason, "House We Used To Live In "by the Smithereens was always one of my fave songs.

I agree. Time shows us that nothing can remain the same forever, but for those places that DO remain, it's like a reward life gives us, that we can still go to some of the same old places we went as kids, and celebrate those who are still with us and remember with a wink a smile and a tear, those who are not. Memories are two-sided, they can make you happy, and they can hurt like hell. I've had a bit of both in my life.

My introduction to this song was through a little game called Vice City on the PS2. I've always loved it because of the game, and I remember all of the memories of driving around through the night, listening to this, Out of Touch by Hall & Oates, and Africa by Toto. However, this one struck different with me. I'm not sure why I love this one so much compared to the others. Last year (2022), Ray Liotta, legendary actor and the voice of the game's protagonist, passed away. Now everytime I hear this song, I imagine Tommy Vercetti strutting the streets in his tuxedo, living the high life Thank you, Ray Liotta and Wang Chung! 💖

It's 1984 and DJ Mike Read is summarising the best songs of 1983 in a TV special on BBC TV. While I can barely remember the other videos on the show, I never forgot this song, despite the fact I'd never heard it before in my life! That's testament to the power of this song, and it wasn't even a big UK Top 40 hit. Although I didn't have a copy to play for decades, I never, ever, forgot it. I still love it as much now as I did then. What a great song!

This video was on MTV all the time in the early 80's, and it's a great song that holds up today, but that suitcase chasing him at the end was such a surreal image almost out of nowhere that always stuck with me. Just a small piece of magical filmmaking.

Will Francis 80’s videos were filled with so much of that kind of surreal imagery. It’s because real artists were involved in conceptualizing, and they weren’t as constrained. Jim Whiting’s robot sculptures in Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit”, Brian Grant’s claustrophobic tribalism in “Shock The Monkey”, and so on. Just brilliant, brilliant artists.

That was the artist trying to say that memories will follow you like a living brief case. It was a metaphor. Many videos in the 80s had messages that were used like metaphors

For a brief, shining moment, Wang Chung ruled the world. They were all anyone was talking about during that time. Then, as quickly as they had BURST onto the scene, they were gone, leaving us all with only beautiful memories.

I remember dancing around in my living room with my brothers to this when I was little. I'll never forget the gifts of music my parents passed down from the eighties and I'm now passing to my nephew, one favorite at a time.

Brilliant. Reminds me of going to France on holiday in 1984 as a 14 year old. Amazing this song only got to number 21 in the UK. This song, I want to break free by Queen, The Reflex by Duran Duran and Don't tell me by Blancmange were the songs that epitomised that summer to me, in the days when I cared about music. Not sure what changed really, I stopped caring sometime in the 90s when hip hop and rap really took off and well crafted pop songs like this went out of fashion. Must be my age I guess.

Wang Chung is still a cool band...those catchy new wave sounds of the 1980s that can never be recreated...due to technological advances in music equipment...it's not easy to recreate that retro sound with modern music equipment...though with Wang chung..these guys can do it..so glad Wang Chung came back last with a new album of reworked songs..amazing how jack and nick still sound as good as ever..their wonderful voices restored in time.
