Dear Prof Dumbrill, thank you very much for your decades of research into deciphering the Hurrian hymns, as elucidated in your “Archaeomusicology of the Ancient Near East” (2005), a monumental book which I greatly admire! Your analysis of the ancient musical terms and translation of the cuneiform scores into staff notation deserve to be regarded as the most authoritative in this field. Your name and your book (with a link to its details) have been credited in the description text below this video since the day it was posted. In hindsight, I should have also credited you clearly in the video itself, e.g. in the section where the hymn appeared, and I deeply apologise for neglecting to do so! I chose to incorporate the Hurrian hymn No. 6 from Ugarit due to the geographical proximity of its excavation site to Aleppo (c. 200 km). Of course, Ugarit is not Aleppo - what I sought to present was the region’s rich history as a cradle of civilisation, before entering Aleppo itself with the “citadel” theme. The change in culture, location and era is also reflected aurally through the change to an Arab musical style. As the bulk of this piece and the video explanations pertains to Arab maqāmāt and īqā‘āt, the hymn has not been the focal point, and my handling of it does not come close to doing enough justice to the subject. I warmly recommend viewers to explore your KZbin channel and your book for an in-depth dissection of the Hurrian hymns!
