These days, many instructors are selling belts. I went back to my old shotokan school 10 years after I left. I was sickened to find people wearing brown and purple belt who could not even perform the lower belt Katas with any form or power. My sensei had sold out to selling belts for money, and therefor had subpar students. During my first run in the school, I was easily winning competitions against black belts as an ORANGE BELT. BELT RANK DOES NOT MATTER IN THE LONG RUN OF THE MARTIAL ARTIST.

Hey Deek77, Wherever it came from and for whatever reason it was introduced, I agree that waay too many schools use it to fast track black belts and pretend they're better than others. I also agree; learning a bunch of moves without understanding what they're for and why is just learning by numbers. I'm fine with guys in MMA having Karate backgrounds, such as Machida and GSP; I think what they've done and where they're at speaks for itself! Take what works for you and discard what doesn't!

Very true, no argument there. What I was referring to was that the belt rank system in general is not a western construct. michaelwood2 claimed it the modern rank system was developed by westerners, which I'm sure you know it was Jigoro Kano, then adopted by other arts.

true. but respect of rank because of rank is also true as well if for nothing more than honour, good manners and ettiquette. Respecting that particular person's senority. When I was working my way up the kyu rankings there were people above me that i had some heated differances with but within the dojo I still bowed and gave respect for his rank so as to maintain peace and more importantly not to piss off the shihan by fighting a senior student in his dojo. Although it made for great kumite

I got my 1st Dan in Shotokan years back when I was a wee nipper. I've now studied western boxing, I teach Muay Thai (20 years of training) and MMA, have 2 years of Brazillian Jiu Jitsu training and fight MMA. Belts don't mean jack. It's just a western thing so people can show they're (apparently) better than others and as a mark of progression. It's fine if you can perform a kata, but do you know WHY you are doing all those techniques and what they're for? Answer that and you're learning.

Only one thing I disagree with you on: the belt/sash rank system isn't a western thing, came from the east and it was just meant how far you've progress in learning. But you're right, now it's being used by too many as a means to say "I'm better than you because of my belt." What is western is schools just having students do kata and not eventually explain it. You mentioned MMA, what are your thoughts on guys like Machida, GSP, and Filho who have karate backgrounds?
@CarciVODs
@CarciVODs 16 жыл бұрын
You're right, they don't train for 10 to 20 years without learning anything. I don't refuse promotion. Rank only shows progression. Think about it. A 1kyu who has been training for 10 years can still be on level with a shodan who has been training for 4-5 years. Rank shows you've progressed, but it is not a clear indication of how good you are at martial arts. Look at the matchups in tournaments. Also to answer your question, Shotokan, 10 years. I don't train to 'fight'. I train to train.

What Dan level you are does not matter, it only shows you've taken a test. Asking who I'd rather be taught by does not prove your point, it is flawed logic. Now to prove MY point, let me ask you this- is it more significant to have a ranking system NOW than it was BEFORE it was created? He only said "it's there to keep your pants up" metaphorically speaking, because it shows very little significance.

Looks can be deceiving, bro. Not a shotokan man, I study a different branch of karate, but I do know that the heavy use of cat stances is one reason it's a black belt kata. In Okinawan styles like Goju Ryu and Shito Ryu, it's a very basic stance. In Shotokan, it's treated as advanced; you don't even see a cat stance until Bassai Sho, which is a 2nd degree kata. And this kata has a distinct Okinawan/Chinese flavor to it, using movements which are of higher difficulty in Shotokan's system.

The other are, for parts, advanced katas (teikki shodan, nidan and sandan, bassai dai and sho, kanku dai and sho) , for other parts, superior katas (chinte, empi, gangaku, gojushio dai and sho, hangetsu, jion, jiin, jitte, meikyo, nijushio, Sochin, unsu et wankan).

So? We don't respect great martial artists because of rank. We respect them for what they have demonstrated and any advances they may have made, not because they've taken a test and gotten a number. How often do you hear someone marvel over how many notches someone has gotten on their belt? You're right, belts are a part of what we do, but I guarantee you that any Japanese instructor who has trained mind and body their whole lives will laugh at you or ignore you.

I've studied martial arts for 17 years. I officially hold a Blue belt is Shotokan. What makes me any less skilled than a black belt? The fact that I have studied various styles instead of just one? The fact that I don't know each and every Shotokan Kata? How about the fact that I can perform forms from various styles of Karate and Kung fu? Those that are so dead set that belt matters are only wrapped up in their own belt, and hate thinking that someone lower could be better than them.

RADOVSKY actually Stevie Ramone is right, the Shotokan version of Wankan is incomplete. It was Giko Funokoshi who first introduced Wankan into the Shotokan system, which of course was not called Shotokan at the time, just Karate-Do. He brought the incomplete Kata with him from the white crane system in China. The complete Wankan Kata is still being thought today in other systems. There is also another version of Wankan or Matsukaze thought in other Karate systems.
