I gained 30 pounds after covid and dealing with a subsequent diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. My MIL (who has never been overweight in her life) always feels she needs to tell me how to lose weight. I usually gain weight while in a flare-up because of the steroids. So, there is no way the weight is going to come off while on the medication. Then, she tells me how to speed up weight loss when I'm in remission. It's very stressful being around her as this is the only thing she will talk to me about.

My heart breaks for you! I hope one day soon you just take the plunge and tell her to kick rocks! The sad thing is that it's my mum, she started doing it when I turned 11 and now that I finally had the courage to talk to her, she says it's so get use to getting comments like this later in life so that it doesn't affect you, she's kinda right but I think this is truly not the answer...any comments?
@kalenanichol83753 ай бұрын
She's your mom. She's supposed to be in your corner, all the time. It's a lot different to have a random stranger call you fat than when your mom says something like that. The logic that "if I'm mean to my kid, it'll prepare them" is bs. Ideally, you don't have to rely on, live with, or look up to mean people. The only thing she's doing is tearing you down, not teaching you resiliency. Please do what you can to take care of yourself and treat yourself with love and respect ❤️❤️❤️
@Phenobarbidoll.3 ай бұрын
My mom swears she never said a single word when I was overweight. And it's true she never harped, but she did occasionally comment. Now I'm thin, and apparently it's ok to comment on smaller bodies and what's put into them. Like threatening several times to have me committed for an eating disorder. Like ma'am I'm in my late 40s and a size 6 with a healthy BMI. The time to have me treated for disordered eating was when I was 15 and started gorging myself until I could barely move.

I'm Happy there is more awareness for what can hurt. But as an overweight person myself, if somebody comes to me with real concern and it they ask me why, then I would not be offended. But the tone and reason really matters. You dont have to tell me I'm heavy, I already know 😉

But what if that person makes a living off making content for the ED community and many of them are triggered by the person's change in appearance? What if the content they are creating that was intended to help actually does harm? Should we just stay quiet? Colleen, many people have expressed genuine concern for you and continue to ignore the elephant in the room. Enough is enough. Stop lying to your audience. It is harming them.

That's a very good point and very well made. Maybe the responsible thing to do would be to stop making videos until she gets herself sorted

As someone who just got out of eating disorder treatment. (I lost 30lbs and gained it back for recovery.) hearing comments is so upsetting. I’m 14 and hearing comments on my body is heartbreaking. It’s genuinely gotten so bad to the point I have lost 17lbs (I’ve been home 3-4 weeks now) and will most likely be going back into treatment. I just really wish people would be more mindful, to any age as well. Whether it’s an 8 year old or a 50 years old it hurts and can do damage. ❤

Good luck with your recovery. Just remember whats most important is your health and not people opinions about your health. I lost a bunch of weight (i have the opposing problem in that im bigger) and my family started calling me beautiful again. But i didnt hear anyone saying that about me when i was larger. People really do treat you different, its sad. Like, if i lose weight, everyone is like WOOOO. And when i eat, its like this massive weight on my stomach, either from anxiety or the previous lack of eating. Then I get really upset and eat everything i can find. Anyways, bottom line is, im sure you are beautiful at all sizes and please please dont let those fools upset you, i know its hard. You got this, you will make it out the other end.
