I've started on duolingo, so small mixed lessons. I can organize better my studies, but I can't imagine learning both hiragana and katakana in just two weeks.

Thanks for the comment! Thinking about it 2 weeks may be more on the faster side since I was a student with a lot of free time - it can definitely take longer than that if you're busy and have responsibilities. The key however is using spaced repetition apps or games and getting into immersion as soon as you can. The more time you spend with and in Japanese the faster your learning will be. Cheers!

I started on Duolingo as well and moved away from it to other apps. You can absolutely do it in 2 weeks. I recommend the Memory Hint apps for Hiragana / Katana, and eventually Kanji. I was struggling at first, but honestly once I got these apps everything clicked because they use really good mnemonics. A few times a day and you’ll have it in no time. There are other resources available, find what works and don’t give up!

You can learn Hiragana and Katakana both in about a week of just 20 minutes or so of study. There's a site that teaches them to you by showing you Hiragana/Katakana, whichever you select, then it asks you to type it the answer, if its wrong, it tells you the answer, if you get it right, you go onto the next. Katakana is going to be the hardest to learn since there are a a bunch that looks nearly identical, like シ,ツ,ソ, but it's not that hard. With that said, stop using Duolingo. I 100% mean it and I'm not trying to be rude. It is the biggest trap/scam when trying to learn, at least, Japanese. It takes way too long to teach you even basic stuff, like Hiragana/Katakana I think takes like 2 months for Duolingo to show all of the characters. Just to show, not teach you, which like this video and I already said, you can learn in 2 weeks or less. And you waste way too much time trying to form sentences with the spaghetti puzzle mini-game they have, even if you know the sentence, you still waste seconds and sometimes minutes looking for the correct word to put in the correct place, when in programs like Anki or even Wanikani you get to the next word/sentence immediately. I can go on, but I don't want to make this longer. I really, really recommend looking around, there's a re several videos, some great ones of people that have used Duaolingo for years and all of them say the exact same thing "It's a waste of time.". There's a specific one made by Mudan, on which he spent 2 yearts using duolingo, went to take the JLPT5 test, the easiest Japanese test, a test that on average 2 months to be able to pass, and ended up realizing that nothing of what Duolingo thought him was useful. Seriously, I cannot express how bad Duolingo is. Do anything, literally anything else to study than that.

Hey there, great video. I see you're starting out on KZbin but this is a good summary imho. I would tend to say that to work in Japan it obviously depends on the type of job you'd want. But I think that starting from N3 (conversational) you can start really finding jobs that are outside simply teaching as an ALT and really find stuff that is in your area. Ofcourse as a full stack engineer for example you don't even need N5! But what I mean is if you don't have special/unique/very sought after qualifications, N3 should be what you're targetting. At N2, it gets WAY easier as you're considered just as valuable as any other Japanese person (which is why it's called business level). Realistically, you would not find anything at N5 or N4. But N3 is when the door gets half-way opened. Let me know what you think though ;). And Good luck on your channel!

I started at September. I decided to power up my reading of hiragana and katakana just playing Ni No Kuni in Japanese (with furigana) without the understanding part, just reading and improve my reading and now is much better. Now I’m learning few kanji’s (I want arrive to 100-200 ) and after that I will start to learn vocabulary and grammar

@LazyMuffin4 Watch a lot of anime, at first i was focused on getting the subs, after a while i realize that just was a waste of time so now i just watched on japanese without the subs, thats for listening, for reading i play a lot of jrpg and search the words that bug me the most with an online tool and a dictionary, also i do a little bit of anki to learn some words but i just use it as little as possible dont waste more than 15 mint on it, i believe.

I've been studying for over a year, and honestly immersion + anki is all you need. For anyone starting out, I can't recommend the "Japanese course based on Tae Kim's grammar guide & anime" deck enough, I would link it but KZbin doesn't like those lol.

Thanks for the comment, glad to hear that! Tae Kim's Grammar Guide was a useful resource I used a while ago, glad to hear it's still relevant.

That's what I'm doing right now. How much immersion do you do and what kind? Curious as a newer learner.

Cool video! 3.5mo in, I think I could maybe pass N5 at this point. Can somewhat comprehend very easy anime but obviously it's very limited. Can't wait to see where this goes in 1, 2, or more years!
