Wanna Make $65 an Hour? Become a Blue Collar Apprentice

Brandon Archilla, a former barber and truck driver, is now on his way to an all-expenses paid path that will lead him to a six-figure salary. He's one of 525 students getting paid to learn a trade at a five-year plumbing apprenticeship program in New York City, run by Plumbers Local Union 1 in Queens. Competition for the program is stiff, and demand is high. Archilla was one of thousands who literally lined up in the street when applications became available. ‘I waited on line for three days, slept on the street,’ said Archilla. ‘About a year later they called me to get in, which is probably the best thing that’s happened to me.’ As part of the program, Archilla gets paid $14 an hour to attend school and work under supervision. At the end of five years, he will earn more than $65 an hour as a journeyman plumber, and walk away with an Associates Degree in Science from The State University of New York’s Empire State College. The best thing about it? Archilla pays absolutely nothing for the training. Tuition is free. ‘We all know that college isn’t for everybody. We call our program the other four year degree,’ said Brent Booker, Secretary-Treasurer of North America’s Building Trades Unions. ‘You get skills training, you earn while you learn.’ The federal government has declared this as the first ever National Apprenticeship Week, and the North American Building Trades Union is hosting open houses in more than 15 cities this week, to raise awareness about apprenticeship programs.

I started at $13 an hour plus benefits last year , and they’ve paid for all my licensing and certifications, training, equipment and vehicle. I’m making right around $20/hr now, with my house and truck paid for and no debt at the age of 21 😎🇺🇸

Got a degree in psychology-hated it. 40k in students loans and it didn’t pay me squat. I applied to the local union for electrical workers (IBEW), demonstrated I’m a hard worker, capable, and most importantly, teachable. Got accepted a year later and never looked back.

This is pretty accurate. I’ve been a tradesmen my entire life. Once I️ got to the level I️ am at now, the money is more than enough to live the kind of life I️ want. We need the next generation to get into this kind of work. We don’t all these high schoolers going to college. A college degree is the new high school diploma. Real professional tradesman are the most needed people in the country, especially when the rest of the baby boomer generation retire.

Because when you graduate from college you will be paid more and have more opportunities to make a hell of a lot more money. Now all that college means nothing if you go get a degree in sociology. College wasn't meant to teach you how to perform a job. That has or was the employer's responsibility but for some reason since the 70s we or I mean society thinks colleges should train you how to do a job when that is NOT what it was designed to do. Colllege was supposed to be for learning. To gain knowledge or some might phrase it as "learning how to learn" or "knowledge for knowledge sake." College is not a vocational school. If you want to learn a trade and never go anywhere then go to a vocational school that teaches you how to be a plumber or HVAC or electrician. We need those people but when you go to those schools you come out of them knowing nothing about how the world works. You only know how to do specific tasks. Sorta like a monkey. If that makes you feel great that you can braze copper but don't know how the US Supreme Court works or your local government then well... goood for you I guess. But please do all the smart people a favor and don't vote. The last thing America needs is another ignorant voter.

Elevator Constructors. First day over $27 an hour and as a Journeyperson just over $50 in Michigan, Today's scale which goes up every year. Not to mention all benefits,Health care, 401k, Annuities, paid vacation and holidays, double time for overtime. Zone pay.

*To all future college students:* Be real with your budget. Do not attend a university if you can't afford it. Do not take on loans equivalent to 40% of your annual income. I went to a UA 342 aperntice ship in 1974 I made 6:46 a hour then...5 years of schooling..To become a welder.I had to retire on disability in 95 making 35 hour.....The trade was the best thing that ever happened to me.

xray tech is same length of education as CT, RT, MRI, ultrasound, RN, radiation therapist, etc - 2 year associates degree, not easy programs but can be done if you apply yourself. BSN is 4 year degree. I don't know of any trade schools offering X-ray certs.

Elevation Station Productions Elevator technician is a good gig, the only issue is , you really have to know somebody already in that union to recommend you, many of the guys in that field, get grand fathered in, meaning they have a family member already in that Union. Where are you located, in the big cities like NYC there is a strong demand for skilled technicians, it can be a really dangerous job though, each year their are fatalities associated with elevator repairs/service.

Good luck with pursuing the IUEC. It’s the best decision many of us have made. Nepotism is a thing of the past with accredited apprenticeships now. It’s about passing the entrance exam and what kind of documentation you can provide regarding skills and certifications. Follow an electrical engineering school path and you will do well. Data networking is becoming more prevalent with destination dispatching systems. There is more to this trade than I ever could have imagined.

This doesn't happen often. Even union workers deal with favoritism, unemployment, and family/friend ties matter in the union. People without those ties can be on a waiting list for years.

@2:35 He is right about college getting expensive. If you go to college you MUST major is something that will produce an income that offsets the cost of college. There aren't many degrees that can do that. Almost all STEM fields do do that but the soft fields like psychology, sociology, anthropology, music, gender studies, religion, etc do not pay off. If you go to college choose Science or a business/marketing degree. If you want to be a lawyer then it is ok to major in political science, history or government but unless you are going to graduate school do not major in those. You can't do anything if you get a political science degree or history degree. You would be better off going to trades school. The problem with trade school is if you like thinking about solving problems then you will feel lost there. I am an ex electrician that went to engineering school. I met plenty of ignorant people and even more idiots in my electrical apprenticeship.

doesn't address the fact why the cost of college have been so high. whether they are majoring in STEM field or not,, they will still incur debt that is hard to pay off.. the degrees required to get into law and med schools are meant to keep "peasants" out...in other countries they don't have this system...usa also tries to nullify the degrees of doctors and others coming from abroad. if they remove these barriers are removed, then actual competition will happen.

@@fironfiron8843 If you get good grades academic scholarships will pay for nearly all one's tuition. Of course tuition isn't the entire cost of an education. People need to have a place to live, buy food, gas, insurance, medical bills, dental, and personal care such as haircuts, clothing, etc. So life is expensive. College is expensive because you have to pay someone to teach you. That guy or girl has a house, kids, medical bills, car maintenance, gas, etc. just like you do. Life is expensive and college is just a reflection of life.

If you went to medical school in Syria there is no fucking way that is the same as going to medical school in a western country like German, France. England, Canada, Australia, etc. I don't think anyone trusts a doctor trained in Mongolia, Nigeria, Chad, etc. I'm glad we discriminate against people with medical degrees from those kind of places. If you go to college in one of those countries it is not equal to going to college in a western country. You can't even verify if someone really did get a degree.

I.P Freely you're on the right track. Your wage will depend on your location. For example, here in Nevada, journeyman scale is about $48 an hour. So that's about $99k a year. That doesn't even include any overtime. I'm currently an apprentice, making $34 an hour, and guaranteed at least 10 hours of overtime per week. And our overtime is double time. So, while yes it's not always quite what's advertised, it's still nothing to sneeze at.

An pre-apprenticeship program is the best way for the average person to get into a local Union. If you live in big city, I’d recommend to GOOGLING for any in your area. Upon completion you’ll receive an direct entry referral to your union of choice. My only nitpicks is that the pre-apprenticeships requires you to attend full time for 4-5 weeks, so you might need to change your shifts around. As well as how competitive and seemingly selective even the pre-apprenticeships in NYC are.

i am 23 years old, living in vancouver bc one of the most expensive cities to live in, at 18 i attended 1 semester in SFU, and decided to learn a trade instead, i spent almost 7 grand for one semester there. on top of that i have other living expenses, it really was killing me because i refused to use my parents' retirement fund to pay my tuition. now i am in cnc machining industry, making money while getting education almost ready for red seal, doing piece work during the weekend in my own shop, the last couple of years has been tough, but i think with a good attitude and willingness to improve yourself, trade gave me a pretty good life. same with university, given that you can afford it, it will provide you with a good living, in my case, i simply dont have the cash for it.

Once you are in a union there are journeymen upgrade classes offered for FREE for life for changing technologies and leadership roles to progress from say just a worker to supervisory roles in construction management. Unions also help with college education after apprenticeship if you want to be a "collar and tie guy".

Trade school is good because trades are always needed, but with a university degree you have more chances to advance in your career the higher you go, and the more advanced degree the more money you make, the only way you can advance with trades is through entrepreneurship, because cosmetology is a trade and plumbing is a trade but here in my small town of western nebraska you dont see plumbers or salon owners making six figure incomes.... however the only degrees to go to a university for are teaching, healthcare (medicine and nursing) law, engineering, Accounting/CPA, computer science/IT. Firefighters and police officers are good on getting a job but they dont make enough money in a lot of places, real estate is good too but it depends on where you live and how many houses you sell.

There is still a shortage of professionals in the trades. I’m an electrician, not a plumber, but the average age for a licensed electrician in my state is 53. Younger generation just are not getting into the trades. I make $90 an hr. $130k this year. No school loans. I think it pretty good. Yeah it can be tough work some days, but it’s enjoyable and beats sitting in a cubicle.

LOL, then why is it that on many job sites likes Monster, Pay scale, etc and on sites with Job sections, like Craigslist, I have yet to see an employer offering $69 per hour for a pipefitter or plumber? Either you're in a fantasy world, or $69 is what they make after like 10+ years of experience. New journeyman aren't going to be making that. Now a foreman might.

I been fully trained in custom shelving wood and steel wire also fully trained as a glass shower glazier and fully trained in residential mirror installation also install bath accessories but that takes no time to learn only took me about 3 months each to learn enough to be able to go out and do proper installations on my own I was being trained in all 3 at the same time pretty much cause of how my job is company I work for installs shelving glass enclosures mirrors and bath accessories in custom new build homes I work about 6 hours a day 7am-1pm make I've been working at my current job for about 42 weeks and I've made 23 K so not so bad for only working 30 hours a week

wish there was more apprenticeships in my area. We only have an Electrical Apprenticeship. The funny part is I graduated college for Electrical Technician with a 4.0 gpa and the Electrical Union told me I don't qualify for the apprenticeship program. Welcome to Tucson.

I heard about Your Particular Situation before , this is how to Remedy it : Go apply again at another Local or even in another state , You are not Required to give any information on your Whole life , they only require a Application & work Documents to enroll & keep your Personal business to yourself, whats Going on is Called Jealousy & Nepotism ---Remember this is a Apprenticeship, so, you have Zero Knowledge & are a beginner --- Just be Motivated & Ready to Take learning from these People who Probably went through the Apprenticeship themselves years ago---They also dont like People walking in with other knowledge then they have to offer , they try to weed Them out, pure Politics & Jealousy / Nepotism. Great example why schools know days don't always make sense and glad to hear that military men are getting into trade work they deserve even more in my opinion if i could they wouldn't have to work but i got no control over it But sweeting coper shouldn't be very hard to figure out Now days there's a big demand for construction trades men and women because the kids don't like the hard dirty work most of them off course

I am a red seal appliance service technician living in Alberta, Canada, here are my advices for those who are thinking of entering into the trade. 1 - start from the bottom of the trade company that you want to work on, most companies don't hire apprentice from outside, they promote guys from within the company. Before I was an apprentice, I was working as a warehouse hand for my appliance repair company, I worked hard to show the boss that I am trainable. working from the bottom also allowed me to see what the trade do and if the trade was right for me. 2- be ready for long days, hard and dirty work. there is no easy way in the trade, you are getting paid to get the job done. You have to be comfortable to be eating lunch when your finger smells like lubricant even after you wash it good, and a lot of the days you don't go home until late at night. 3 - get ready for headache, trade jobs require a lot of planning and thinking, physically doing it is only half the battle, a lot of the times you need to think about how to make the project work. a lot of people think that trade is brainless jobs for workers to follow steps, but it is not. I hope you all succeed out there.

I can't foresee any major issues in a commercial environment, I have worked with drunk natives who seemed to do okay on the job. In my opinion, a speech impediment may be a small barrier if you were doing any residential service trade such as domestic plumbing or air-conditioning service where you would have to give explicit details to the client about their home plumbing or HVAC system.

Excellent....RN's make shit...and take the heat from most of the medical teams around them. I would absolutely start over and go to such an apprenticeship school if I weren't 53 now. Period. For one,....I would be the most qualified and educated "plumber" in the joint,...and two, I'm smart enough to be able to start a company doing so, with the best of the best....."they always show up in time".

In SoCal, I was in a plumber's and pipefitters' union where you went to classes for five years and took their certification test along with accredited work hours for journeyman certification. Journeyman wages are only $35 an hour and you can be expected to travel to job sites in your personal vehicle for new construction. If you work service and repair in the union, your wage is less than $20 an hour as a journeyman.

Ewangbruno Bruno2 Dubai? Do whatever you need to for a job where you can learn. You can order books like Uniform Plumbing Codes, but the measurements are not metric and standard for USA & Canada, I believe. I don't really know of good books for plumbing.
