I’m putting on my Tin Foil Hat for this one. There was an equivalent to Okinawa back in the void century, it’s separate from wano itself but in the vicinity. The ones living there was Toki’s clan and that’s why we don’t see them now, and that’s why Toki teleported OUTSIDE of Wano because they were outside to begin with. As for why we don’t see them now, the WG was their enemy and when the walls around Wano were made, they did not make it back inside or they made the honourable decision to fight the WG outside delaying them from getting to Wano so the walls could be built, they lost and the island disappeared (which the WG can do because they made Gods Valley disappear. Interestingly Okinawa *is* referenced already in One Piece, as it was formerly known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, until invasion by Japan in the early 1600s. The Ryugu Kingdom a.k.a. Fishman Island references both the Urashima Taro folk tale, where Taro opens the Tamatebako offered by princess Otohime, and the Ryugyu kingdom. Karate, the traditional fighting style of fishmen, has its real-world roots in the traditional martial arts of Okinawa.
