I thought this was set in 1988 when the kid narrating the story said "how can a girl 11 years ago be here when the picture was taken in 1977? " and yet they have modern phones we have today. Either I misheard what he meant or the person said it wrong and meant "a girl who was 11 in 1977."

Yes, breaking and entering is a crime, even if the house is abandoned. The boys were lucky they weren't hurt. Its never a good idea to go to abandoned places since at best homeless people take refuge there and at worse, they could be a den of illegal activities.
