Hi! I’m Bri from Urban Gardening Canada. I teach gardening information to all levels of gardeners who grow in colder climates, that have to contend with frost, snow, cold nights and short growing seasons. I love to grow vegetables, flowers and fruit and want to teach you how you can grow your own food too. You may see some insects on this channel, because I love bugs and they are an important part of the gardening experience. Gardening is an amazing hobby that can teach you about nature, biodiversity, caring for the planet, and growing your own healthy, organic food.

Every fall I collect the leaves from our lawn and break them up by running the lawn mower over them. I also put the leaves into a garbage can and use my weed wacker to get them finer. After cleaning up the gardens, I bury the kitchen scrapes so they are broken down for next season.

Leaf mould is such a great soil amendment! Do you leave them in the garbage can like that to break down or do you cover your beds with them?

@@urbangardeningcanada I use the broken-down leaves to cover my beds and if I have some leftover I add them to the compost pile.

Your videos are very beneficial to me since I live in Ontario. I do have a compost bin, but I will try your suggestion to spread the last grass clippings over my raised beds. I dethatch my lawn in early Spring before the first fertilizing and late Summer before applying the last liquid lawn fertilizer. Normally, I would put that dead grass straight into my composter. But this time, I spread it over my already empty bed to let it dry. I discovered that it is very effective as a weed barrier, which means it saves me some work. I may transfer it from that empty bed and use it as mulch for my garlic bed.

Wow you're already doing so much with your lawn cuttings that's amazing. Many people don't realize just how much nutrients are in grass so it makes for such a good mulch or compost addition. Sounds like your soil must be really healthy already

@@urbangardeningcanada It is. I have been composting for over 45 years. So my soil is rich with organic matter, fluffy and free of rocks bigger than a round grape. I turn it over in the Spring, before planting and in the Fall, before the ground freezes. I pick out rocks on the surface every time I am weeding. The veggies love it.
