Always great to see content around getting it right in-camera and not relying on 15 nodes to manipulate an image. Great reminder, and timely considering Cullen Kelly's colorist recent video perspective of advice to DP's for not wasting time on set for things colorists can simply fix.

A camera is just a data gathering system. You need to concentrate on what's in FRONT of the camera. It's important. I agree with this guy too about how you shouldn't have to do much colour correction/grading after you've shot stuff. I think having a monitoring LUT would be a game changer for most people.

Yeah it really helps you get a feel for things. Instead of trying to create your look in post and feel miserable cus you're trying to make a seemless sequence without shooting for your look on set.

Another great clip. At this point I don't like to shoot without developing an intended "look" beforehand, and then lighting the shots "for the grade" via monitoring LUT. The colorist can be given the shooting LUT (and possibly test footage) for reference. They'll likely do something better than you did, but you've shaved off a ton of effort in communicating desires. Sometimes you can't do that unless you knew how to develop a solid look in Resolve first. You also get the benefit of making more informed lighting decisions on set, looking at a "Graded" shot.

There is a ton of resolve videos out there, but I wish there was a “Resolve for DPs” video. Most videos either skip through essential stuff, or go too deep into technical things.

This is such a powerful point. Really been hitting the Resolve weights lately, just to understand my camera and taste better, and to be a better communicator with others. 🤘🏻😮‍💨

This video talks about the same concept, but from the colors perspective. “What you can and can’t get away with on set from the colorist perspective. “ credit to Cullen Kelly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYmympyPmM-erbMsi=G62KXKR8_a86lfqo

any advice on starting to understand resolve ?
@KeithDCarl
@KeithDCarl 4 ай бұрын
If you're just starting out with Resolve, I think Casey Faris offers good advice in brief bite sized videos on single tasks in Resolve. His videos run through the steps required to complete the task at hand. When I need to remember how to do something I haven't looked at for a long time, he usually has a 5 minute video going through the steps. He's not very heavy on why you would use this or that method, but he's a great resource and is very efficient when you need to look up how to do something you know you want to do. When it comes to honing an image via exposure compensation, contrast, color balance, etc., Cullen Kelly is your man. His instruction goes into why you may choose a method over another method and further explains the creative purpose behind one method over another. His videos are therefore longer, deeper, and many build upon skills learned from earlier videos. When you begin with Cullen you must start with his videos explaining the ins and outs of color space transformation and also basic node tree structure. All the rest of his videos will build upon these foundational structures. It should be mentioned here that after substantial research in this area I can testify that the foundations of color space transformation and the type of node tree structures Cullen demonstrates are consistent among colorists who know what they're doing. Everyone has their own flavor, but everyone who knows, agrees that these two concepts are THE foundational concepts you must build upon. So, let Casey tell you what a Node is in Resolve and then let Cullen teach you how to use them.
