I love hunting with my Taurus model 66 357mag revolver. I shot my buck this gun season at about 35 feet or so. All I could get was a head shot so I took it. I wasn’t concerned about a mount cause he only had one antler and it had 6 points

Yeah… you might want to hunt the area later. You don’t want to educate the deer to associate the gun shot with humans talking. Some animals won’t even take off when they hear a shot. But they hear or smell you… they gone.
@cottleful Жыл бұрын
@@TheBeefSlayer I have hunted my entire life and have never had an issue. I think as long as you aren’t screaming in your stand you are good to talk. Whispering is just pretty dumb unless maybe you are bow hunting. Deer are almost always going to be one of two ways either they are afraid of humans because they already know what humans are or they have never seen one before and won’t run either way.
@cottleful Жыл бұрын
@@WhitetailDiaries it’s still goofy to whisper. Staying in the stand long enough for them to expire is very important. I don’t think a dying deer is going to stay around to listen to see what shot him lol. At least it’s never happened in my life of hunting whitetail.

Great video guys. I myself prefer to use just a 44 mag with a 6 and a half inch barrel, no optics. I like to be as traditional as possible. And I like to make it even more challenging buy hunting on the ground with no blinds. I'm 45 and have had the opportunity to harvest many deer over the last 33 years. It's not about kill anymore, with age comes respect and a different outlook on life. I love to challenge myself and to show the respect that these animals deserve. To take a deer with a pistol is a trophy, doesn't matter if it's a doe, or a buck.

That's awesome. and we agree! Something about being on a hunt with a handgun that's really exciting. Open sights is certainly a big challenge as well! Thanks for sharing your passion on hunting with handguns!!! Good luck

I agree. Shot a big doe this year with my 45. 1911 open sights. Just had shoulder surgery, if I wanted to hunt was forced to use a pistol. 42.7 yards standing. I'm hooked on pistol hunting now.

I agree! I'm 47 and about 10 years ago I started using traditional muzzleloaders for black bear. I've harvested 3 bears and a big 3x3 mule deer so far. On foot, sneaking around in the woods. No dogs, no bait, no blinds. I also gave up my compound for a sightless recurve. This year I'm taking my .460 mag Encore and .44 mag Contender to the woods with me. Good luck to you!

I have a much loved 460V 5-inch muzzle-brake equipped S&W X-frame at just over 60 ounces. And a 500 S&W X-frame with a half-lug 6.5 inch barrel. Has integral compensator ports on both sides of the front sight. Both much customized and love them both. The 500 is just over 60 ounces also. The 460V had a Master Revolver Package done by the Performance Center. Great people to work with.

I'll be hunting with a colt king cobra this year, should be an excellent challenge. I'll have a 12 gauge or a rifle with me as well in case I don't have anything get close enough for an ethical shot. I'll eventually be getting a 460 with an optic to reach out further but that'll have to wait until the 2021 season.

@@WhitetailDiaries plans may have changed actually, its been so long since I could find ammo to practice with the 357 that my accuracy is atrocious. Thankfully 12 gauge ammo in general has been plentiful enough that I've been able to practice with slugs all summer long and I've been able to pattern several different factory buckshot loads, right now with open sights I can blow up gallon water jugs at a maximum of 125 yards using federal truball rifled slugs, and 30-30 I'm able to hit clay pigeons propped up at 150 using open sights on my Winchester 94. While the colt will likely stay on my hip this season I'm at least confident that if a whitetail comes into view I'll be able to put a round where it needs to go. I place my blinds and tree stands very strategically so that I don't have a line of sight longer than 150 yards from any given spot that I hunt from, that way I can guarantee that if I can see the deer I can take a shot with 100% confidence that it's going to hit vitals.

Mine shoots high, I looked up the ballistics on a typical .460 load and it’s climbs right out of the barrel. It doesn’t hit point of aim until 100 yards. Since I don’t usually shoot 100 yds with a handgun I always aim low. It’s a challenge trying to figure out where these super expensive bullets are going to hit!
@WhitetailDiaries3 жыл бұрын
Super Expensive is right. We actually practice with the 45 Long Colt a lot. It won't hit near where you've sighted in for the 460 rounds however we use the 45 long colts to work on trigger pull and grouping.

Yamaha Whitetail Diaries , Glad to know that. At what distances have you been practicing, and are you practicing with the actual field rest you’re going to use? I’m curious to know what kind of field accuracy you were getting at 50 yards in at 100 yards?
@WhitetailDiaries4 жыл бұрын
@@xphunter24 This is Wade. I Mostly practice at 50 yards or less to work on trigger pull but I do shoot at 100 yards as well. Our groups at 50 are nice and tight but as you imagine at 100 they loosen up a bit. I've seen some guys at 150 shoot better than I do at 50 on occasion so it's doable with practice no doubt.

We really like to use the RMR or SRO style red doys the best for durability sakes. We've had some handgun scopes hold up for 150 ish rounds before seeing small fractures in the lens.
@lukasjohnson68024 жыл бұрын
It's extremely disrespectful to bring someone with no handgun experience and a few rounds of practice into the field and put him in a situation to shoot at an animal like that. All parties involved should consider themselves lucky he missed the first shot rather than wounded the buck.
