It was impressive of the Academy to award, during the Cold War, an Oscar to a 7-hour long Soviet epic. I've seen the film and it makes sense. How often does a director get to have a literal cast of thousands? In this case, the number of extras is pegged at 12 to 15 thousand.

In War and Peace in the scene of the battle of Borodino participated 120000 people. Lyudmila Savelyeva was born in January 1942 in besieged Leningrad in the midst of famine. Ath the end of her speach she says: "I am very happy and I want to thank on my own behalf, on behalf of the director, and on all the participants in our film, the recognition of our great work. I am currently watching this. Just finished the first part.... It is INCREDIBLE! . I am also trying to delve into the book as well (Anthony Briggs translation) but this film is a must see!!! The way some of the scenes were shot it looked like they had drones!.. Really beautiful.. Nice film. The ONLY Criticism I have (and this is an issue with many 1960s era films is the lack of detail to costume and hairstyle.. too many bouffants and the fabrics look cheap and polyester.. and the stitching isn't very good. BUT That is because I appreciate historically accurate costuming.. I am spoiled, what can I say.. but other than that it is really a beautiful work of art!

Why "Russia" in 1969? When did the US consider the Russian S.F.S.R. to be a different country from say the Ukrainian S.S.R. and when does it consider all of them to be one country, the USSR? They were considered one country in the Olympics ( which is odd because Olympics lets Puerto Rico have a team and it's CLEARLY not a country and part of the US).
