You may laugh at it now,but I remember sitting on the edge of my chair while watching films like this. Back in the fifties space travel was the epitomy of adventure, and we all wanted to go! For its time, this film was a great effort at realism, involving character flaws, jealousy, relationships, and the ever present danger. I give it AOK!

Thank you sooo much. I remembered this movie from when I was a kid and was always trying to find out which movie it was. Real distinctive name “War Between the Planets”. I knew it was something like that. I always remembered the “planet” with the arteries that were self-healing. And the catastrophic effects on the Earth. Have no idea what I thought at the time, but was (obviously) fascinated by the “wild planet”. They didn’t even try to communicate with it or find out anything about it before blowing it up. Cpt Picard would not have approved.

Less than 3 minutes into the movie, and I like it. Everybody knows that the city was a small scale model, but strangely enough, that's what captivated me about other Italian sci fi films in the '60s. I very often wind up talking about and, to some extent, defending films from this general era and a little earlier (the 1950's), films that are often picked on like THIS ISLAND EARTH or WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, THE MOLE PEOPLE, CONQUEST OF SPACE, THE LAND UNKNOWN etc etc., but they are giants of perfect film making compared to some of the films at the time, and this is a perfect example. NO one thought these films were remotely acceptable in any way as even semi-serious SF tales. These were just laughed at out loud in the theater (yes, including this one which I saw in a theater on its original release. My friends and i were all around 11-12 at the time and just thought this was ridiculous. The "effects" were ridiculous, a real hoot. I'm always shocked when films like this are lumped in with films like the above---THIS ISLAND EARTH, etc---because even a cursory examination reveals a HUGE difference in quality- between those and this one--the acting, visual effects, stories etc. Sorry, if this comes off as "mean", but...this is pretty sloppy film making, and as fake as it gets...maybe with the exception of Ed Wood's "productions".. YET...I DO appreciate people who make any effort to appreciate some of the "less perfected" work from years long past. And I DO appreciate that this was done here. My main point is that these films were made with many differences in quality, and I hate to have them all dismissed as all being equal. (End of rant...:-)
