You may laugh at it now,but I remember sitting on the edge of my chair while watching films like this. Back in the fifties space travel was the epitomy of adventure, and we all wanted to go! For its time, this film was a great effort at realism, involving character flaws, jealousy, relationships, and the ever present danger. I give it AOK!

This brings back the childhood memories. Back then this was so believable, high tech movies. Laying on the floor in front of the TV with a huge bowl of dry Cherrios. Then the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits came later. Best you could get. Well, back then anyway.

@SomeGuy-hd4cn it is genius imho. Rod Sterling was using sci fi to do social commentary that the network wouldn't let him do in a straightforward way. That's why it's soooo good.

This is Number 4 of the Gamma One space movies -- commissioned by MGM for TV in 1964, filmed in Italy in 1965, rejected from TV and shown in Italian theaters in 1966, shown in American theaters in 1967, and syndicated on American TV in the 1970s.

Thank you sooo much. I remembered this movie from when I was a kid and was always trying to find out which movie it was. Real distinctive name “War Between the Planets”. I knew it was something like that. I always remembered the “planet” with the arteries that were self-healing. And the catastrophic effects on the Earth. Have no idea what I thought at the time, but was (obviously) fascinated by the “wild planet”. They didn’t even try to communicate with it or find out anything about it before blowing it up. Cpt Picard would not have approved.

Less than 3 minutes into the movie, and I like it. Everybody knows that the city was a small scale model, but strangely enough, that's what captivated me about other Italian sci fi films in the '60s. If I'm correct, the officer who said that he wants to fight it with his bare hands, he's going to be absorbed by the planetoid. Yeah, yeah, I've seen this one before, but it's something to watch on Thanksgiving.

I very often wind up talking about and, to some extent, defending films from this general era and a little earlier (the 1950's), films that are often picked on like THIS ISLAND EARTH or WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, THE MOLE PEOPLE, CONQUEST OF SPACE, THE LAND UNKNOWN etc etc., but they are giants of perfect film making compared to some of the films at the time, and this is a perfect example. NO one thought these films were remotely acceptable in any way as even semi-serious SF tales. These were just laughed at out loud in the theater (yes, including this one which I saw in a theater on its original release. My friends and i were all around 11-12 at the time and just thought this was ridiculous. The "effects" were ridiculous, a real hoot. I'm always shocked when films like this are lumped in with films like the above---THIS ISLAND EARTH, etc---because even a cursory examination reveals a HUGE difference in quality- between those and this one--the acting, visual effects, stories etc. Sorry, if this comes off as "mean", but...this is pretty sloppy film making, and as fake as it gets...maybe with the exception of Ed Wood's "productions".. YET...I DO appreciate people who make any effort to appreciate some of the "less perfected" work from years long past. And I DO appreciate that this was done here. My main point is that these films were made with many differences in quality, and I hate to have them all dismissed as all being equal. (End of rant...:-)

Aliens would never expect our space Marines to carry a hatchet, that's next level military genius stuff right there.

The models and sets were pretty cool, and I enjoyed it. The Italian sci-fi imports from the '70's were dreadfully bad. Another film from Italy in 1965 was Planet of the Vampires with Barry Sullivan - absolutely top notch!

Way ahead of its time --- helicopters that fly in outer space.....sooooooo far advanced than what we have not.

This fine Italian scifi movie features the most realistic space walk scenes ever put on film! The scenes reflect the little known fact that gravity is variable and causes back and forth motion (in space) as well as arms and legs drooping while the ass is elevated above the astronauts somewhat weightless body. The best of the best.

The Doctor Who episode Ark in Space was the inspiration for Alien, with the alien itself inspired by a drawing on The Necronomicon.

ColTaylorDyath I've seen very little Dr. Who so I'll take your word for it. I never heard of the Necronomicon inspiring the Xenomorph design either. Maybe it's just one of those crazy coincidences that "Planet" is similar.

I think it was on the Alien boxed set extras itself where it was mentioned about the Necronomicon inspiring the HR Giger alien. I'll root around for it some time.
