I definitely had the "best buy" experience you described too as a kid. It's how i got games like Empire at War and The Battle for Middle Earth, but also an immense amount of silly, licensed shovelware. It wasn't hard to convince my parents when we were out to shop for some stuff my dad needed (or were just browsing stuff... my parents had a nasty divorce and my dad liked to bribe us) to get one of those if me and my brother found a game we liked. Also the callback to Mystery of the Droods made me reel with laughter. Well played, sir.

Memory of that kind of games is why I will probably forever have a soft spot in my heart for CD Projekt and why their cameo in Phantom Liberty moved me more than it should. That's also how I got slapped in the face with Kingdom Under Fire.

I somehow picked the best games there. Star Wars Empire at War, Rome Total War Gold Edition, Sup-Com Gold Edition. I was really lucky with what I found in those pyramids. Man, rifling through those and looking at the cases, imagining what the game would be like...those were the days.
@sofija199610 ай бұрын
I kind of missed out on those games because I rarely got a chance to go through the video game aisle at a supermarket when I was younger (I'd usually be left at the Lego or Barbie aisles instead), and when I moved to a bigger city in middle school I already had access to one of then-renowned local gaming magazines and internet so I could check other people's opinions... but at the same time that very same magazine came with a DVD full of games. Sometimes it was old classics, sometimes a big budget game that already made rounds through all the discounted retail editions, and sometimes it was this exact kind of Mandalore/Warlockracy/Ross bait. A game nobody has heard of, often made by a smaller studio in Europe, sometimes only playable in English. They had stuff like Darkstar One, Advent Rising, Loki, Sacred, Mage Knight Apocalypse... I should probably go through my collection and see what can I dig up. Another good source of these trash/treasure coinflips is small stores with second-hand PS2/early X360 and PS3 games. I have a habit of going there with my partner whenever I visit her and I seem to find the darndest stuff out there.

@@Dlúith So, there was an animation short movie called the Animatrix, showing how humanity fell to robots in warfare over time. From memory, the scene I'm referencing specifically was near the end, when the robots discovered how easily it was to kill humans physically without the use of firearms or conventional weaponry. What happened was there was a lone soldier in power armor attempting to fight for his life. The machine that found him grabbed the armor by its arms and legs and kept it from escaping using tentacle-like appendages. It then ripped open the cockpit where the soldier was struggling, begging for mercy, and wrapped a tendril around him, quite literally tearing him out of the suit as he screamed before finally being killed, tearing his arms and legs off which were still attached to the suit. I dunno who the VA was but to this day It's stuck with me, horrifying.

Seeing Mandalore cover this ancient gem of a fossil fills me with hope that he'll someday review Codename Panzers Phase 1 and 2. They were such awesome old-school RTS with quite a few unique gameplay mechanics like tanks having actual armor layouts, being able to crew everything from tractors to civilian cars (and capturing enemy vehicles by roasting them with flamethrowers until the crews would run out covered in fire.) They were made by a small Hungarian studio that sadly went bankrupt in the 2000s, and I'm pretty sure they were ported to Steam around 2018 by a different studio which acquired the rights. Surprisingly bugless and working flawlessly on modern systems as well, which is quite strange, I only ever recall it crashing once in all the times I've had the pleasure of repeatedly beating it over my entire life.

@@thejugernautkiller390 whats improper about the use of dynasty here? It's not strictly accurate because they aren't nobility but "political dynasty" being used to refer to families with many members serving as politicians isn't uncommon.

Man I wanted to play this game back in the day on my old potato PC but could not simply do. The art cover for the game on the disc was the thing that drawn me to it. Thanks Mandalore for allowing me to see what I missed from my childhood.
