I believe the 1700s is a underrated material for game ideas. We have a handful of games based in the era but no MMO games covering it. I also believed napoleonic wars and civil war games are overrated due to so many devs jumping on the band wagon

The cost is the issue. It’s one thing to buy and play a game, it’s a WHOLE nother to have to go out and buy all the appropriate, authentic equipment and spend time drilling with actual people. In this economy, less people have the disposable income or time to do such things.

Just started playing WoRs. It is certainly an interesting game, with a lot of people around when playing. Not the usual 4 player team I am accustomed to playing.

Can you play this game causally without having to join a regiment? And in the same breath, in order to take part in these massive battles, must you be join a regiment?

Since nobody ever answered you - yeah you can play without a regiment.. usually there’s one server up with decent activity. Since the player base is almost exclusively older then the best times to catch a decently sized match is around 7pm or 8pm on weekdays and either mornings or evenings on weekends. I just hopped off an open match with like 200 players on so you can get into some pretty massive battles without a regiment. The fully coordinated and disciplined unit games are mostly private matches hosted by regiments though. Public lobbies tend to have a fair amount of people who are just bad at following orders, although because of the style of the game there usually is great NCOs and commanders from regiments who hop on open matches when nothing big is going on and lead units. It just maybe won’t look as perfectly put together as this, since in these matches everyone is following discipline and knows their officers and so on.

Try the mount and blade games? Bannerlord is the more recent one but its predecessor Warband has mods for gunpowder eras, think there might be a civil war one as well.

I think bannerlord has a work-in-progress napoleonic era mod right now. Also, not exactly what you want, but mount and blade warband still has active players on the napoleonic wars commander battles mode where each player controls an AI regiment. I was playing the other day with ~35 people
