Hey Lionheart, long time fan and Scottish/British historian of the period; my thesis specialised in the First Jacobite Uprising (or Highland War) of 1689-1691. You are, indeed, correct! Scotland and England were governed separately until 1707 when they were brought together as Great Britain with the Act of Union. Up until then, the two countries had been uneasily brought together by the dynastic union of 1603 under one monarchy, the Scottish Stuarts. Although the concept of Great Britain had been promoted by Stuart monarchs since King James VI and I came to the throne in 1603, it never fully took hold as we know it today. Basically, Britain was more of a Royal concept, a multi-national monarchical union, than a nation-state in the seventeenth century. This is evident in the divergences seen during the 'English' Civil War, now better known as the War of the Three Kingdoms (1638-1654) as it involved Scotland, England and Ireland. This mod is based on the start date of 1690 (which isn't in the original game or other mods, which lock to 1700) during which Scotland and Ireland were suffering severe civil wars due to the divisions caused by the Revolution and Dutch Invasion of England in 1688. This had deposed the Catholic King James VII & II but some Scottish Protestants remained loyal to the Stuart Dynasty. William of Orange, and his wife Mary Stuart (James's daughter) took over the monarchy of Great Britain in Ireland in theory in 1688 but in practice he had to be confirmed by the Scottish Parliament in 1689. There was unease about dethroning King James VII & II but the Protestant majority, and opponents of James, in Scotland ended up dominating the Convention of Estates which decided to do so. They deposed James and all hell broke loose. The three year civil war was not just confined to the Highlands and saw fighting on the streets of Edinburgh - the more famous battle would be the Battle of Killiecrankie, which took place in the Atholl Highlands. So, if I could offer my professional opinion here - this mod supposes that the Jacobites have taken over Scotland or that the Convention voted to diverge from England and keep King James. The mod's limitations are clear as it still shows the Scotland emergent faction of old Empire and Charles III (Bonnie Prince Charlie, not even born in 1690) as monarch. Another explanation is that the modders are simulating the continued existence of an independent Scottish government until 1707 - I don't know if there's a script for the Act of Union in 1707. Ireland should also be independent from Britain in the 1690 start as James was far more popular there due to the Catholic majority. He actually held court in Ireland and had a huge Irish Jacobite Army which opposed the Williamites British-Dutch forces (assisted by some local Protestants from the North). I can only guess the mod can't do Ireland as an emergent faction. The reason you are Great Britain must be, again, the limitations of the game,. As you should start as the historically accurate Kingdom of England and then shift to Great Britain but as Britain ended up being dominated by Anglo-centric institutions, such as the Royal Navy and Westminster Parliament, this is another convenient sticking plaster. Finally, as you are playing William of Orange, whom remained Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic during his time as King of Great Britain and Ireland, you should also have some degree of control over the Dutch Republic's military forces. All of these nuances and complexities could make historical starts and factions unique in a sequel to Empire maybe akin to the Warhammer entries in TW. I've been saying for years, as a military-political historian of this period, that a 1688-1690 start date makes more sense for Empire because you still had pikes and older seventeenth century tactics in the Early Start in Empire, even in Vanilla. Anyway, love the video in spite of you conquering Scotland like Oliver Cromwell! A' the best, Sláinte! Dr Graeme Millen
@alfiesmith2510Ай бұрын
Alternatively I think Scotland might be “independent” to simulate an ongoing Jacobite rebellion, which was very common around this period. William 3rd and Mary came to power after overthrowing James 2nd (of England), leading to a series of Jacobite rebellions for James and his natural heirs. Even though the formal union did occur late, the crowd of England and Scotland has been united for nearly a century at this point so it is still a choice to have an independent Scotland. Practically, It also allows people to possibly play as Scotland so one extra faction.

@JRimbeckАй бұрын
(The following is a letter from the Chamberlain family’s archives, yes this time I am writing from two POVs) Dear Granny: We’ve been hearing about what Liam and the navy have been doing while we stand on the border mucking about, drilling mindlessly for days on end, and before you say it I know I should be grateful for Liam’s success. His prize money paid for the fine horse I ride and my billet in the 1st Regiment of Horses as one of the few men wearing a knot with cord loops. It signifies some sort of rank, in reality for the last few weeks I have been in charge of overseeing the supplies, and anything but the horses which frankly is what I expected to be doing. The only bloody reason I can think about why my duties are such garbage is because I am one of the few who can write and read effectively. The fact we finally got to the fight and it turned out we were laying siege was extremely annoying to the infantry, for us in the cavalry at least we had more fun. Spending the better part of a week cutting off the roads as the engineers figure out how to lay siege to this city. Which meant driving off or capturing supplies intended for the city and screening against any relief efforts. We had just settled down for a wonderful dinner, provided kindly to us by a captured supply wagon when orders to recall and rejoin the rest of the regiment at a certain grove of trees came to us. Naturally, our company answered these orders with haste abandoning our plates and supper plans with all haste required. As we arrived, the army was fully forming up, cannons already firing onto some Scottish forces that had marshaled up and were sallying out of the city to us. Our forces rushing from their barely started earthworks and sapper plans to form ranks, to call our force prepared and organized wasn’t entirely true nor was it incorrect. The General wanted to get the measure of the foe and took his bloody time studying them before returning to the formation, then in clearly something of a thought ordered the two horse regiments to redeploy to the far right flank of the line. For the next half hour or so we waited watching the foe come on, being bombarded by our thundering cannons. Finally, we were given the orders to fall on the flank of the Scottish Milita in front of us, we wheeled and hit them solid in the flank as the 2nd Regiment drove the other militia into them. Causing the ones we were charging to panic and fire into the banks of their men. However, while we were stuck in another unit of Scottish Milita turned around and fired into the rear of the 2nd regiment dropping scores of men from their saddles. Yet they moved smartly, and we drove into this new threat hard, just as one of our infantry regiments charged them from the rear, smashing them properly. From there our blood was up and we continued to to drive in the flank of the enemy savaging them without mercy to those who fought back, dozens came to their senses and surrendered wisely to avoid a pointless death. The next thing I knew we were informed to hold our blades and let the rest of the enemy flee for the city’s defenses, so we collected the prisoners as our infantry collected the wounded and dealt with the dead. I must confess my hands shook heavily as I wiped the blood from my blade after the battle, and the shakes didn’t leave for a good solid hour. I did my best to hide my cowardice from my fellows by keeping busy looking over the map and trying to figure out where the safest place might be for the future, I went to my officer and suggested that we should send a platoon to check and make sure the enemy didn’t take this time to resupply the city or evacuate it from the far side. He nodded in approval and noted how it was more likely they just reinforced it, and that since I was so eager to get more of them my platoon would go. It took everything to hide how much my hands shook at the prospect of facing more muskets. As we arrived on the far side, it did appear that the enemy was trying to smuggle in supplies to help the garrison hold out longer, our platoon leader sent a rider reporting this to the army and much to my horror ordered us to draw swords and follow him. His lousy plan was to drive us right into the city behind those supply wagons and keep the gates open so the rest of our troops could pour in behind us. Thinking quickly on my feet I suggested that at least a few of us should stay behind and guide the rest of the Regiment in, to which he agreed allowing me and my small band to stay back. Yes, some of the defenders atop the wall were taking potshots at us however they were more invested in trying to stop the rest of our platoon so I felt fairly safe for the most part. As the two-horse regiment thundered over to us as fast as their mounts could carry, the sounds of cannons opening up on the other side of the city let me know our general had decided to go for an all-out rush of the thing. That is when one of my men rushed over to me reporting that the Scotts had a cannon they had craftily moved to the gate, clearly intent on clearing the obstruction our men were causing there. I realized with great horror that if they did so successfully they would simply swing the massive gun around and blast me to bits after, so much for that being a safe spot. The rest of the regiment was still coming on strong but hadn’t reached us yet and by the time they did it would be too late, so I couldn't just try to pawn the job off on someone else. As I drew my sword my hand shook slightly and I pointed at the cannon spurring my poor mount hard, knowing that my only chance for safety depended on getting stuck in. After we captured the city people made my small charge out to be a much bigger deal than it was honestly. We got extremely lucky, the cannon was a bluff to try and trick my platoon into retreating when we reached it and cut its crew down I quickly discovered it had no powder. Our clearing of the cannon did clear the way for two regiments of horses to thunder through the streets nearly unobstructed. Since then, I have been keeping my ear to the streets, and I was aware of the upcoming Scottish rebellion before most others. Frankly, with my limited powers, I did the best I could to prevent it from erupting in the city. Thanks to my cunning, I was able to get them to assign my squadron to patrol the roads, a safe post I thought. Unfortunately, I was wrong. My cursed luck instead of keeping me from the fire found my squadron on the far right flank and alarming everyone to the upcoming battle. I saw with growing alarm that the enemy cavalry were attacking the flank of our line cutting off our horse regiments line of retreat. Shouting to the nearest officer, how we should drive those units back now, I was given a call to lead them into it. Which naturally made my hands shake even more, I had bungled my attempts to avoid direct combat now finding myself leading the charge. As we drove off the first group of cavalry, our 2nd horse regiment attempted to save the infantry from the second one. Much to my horror the infantry broke as the 2nd were just delayed a tad too long. However, they still caught the flank of the enemy shattering him before they could maul our infantry. Somehow through the maelstrom, I led our regiment, regrouping as ordered in the dead ground off to the right of the battle, safe from any forces I thought. That though never so much as cleared the front of my mind before our commander ordered us onto the last remaining rebel unit in the field. We smashed into their flank and a short but bloodied battle. Which ended but an hour ago, I snuck off to get my arm stitched up where an officer’s sword nicked it, carving through my wool coat but not deep into my flesh. The wound is so minor I have elected to wait my turn over by some trees writing to you over waiting in that horrible pit of suffering they call a field hospital. Your loving grandson Arthur Cain Chamberlain

Letter from Jason Holmes Mother, word has reached our ears about a war with Spain. More specifically, the territories they call New Spain. John is still waiting for orders, though I must admit that I am envious. I have heard from sailors about the beautiful Caribbean islands and women. However, I must confide that I would miss my home here in New York. Perhaps, once this war is over, I shall settle down and marry. Start a family and begin my own farm with the hope of perhaps allowing you and father to finally relax and focus on things you have longed to do. Love, Jason

So when you accepted to support Portugal I’m pretty sure the only person you went to war with is Spain itself, now if attack someone then you go to war with their allies if they decide to join but not if an ally is attacked, just for future reference

@@lionheartx10 I don't claim to know anything about how the developers are thinking, but I could see an Empire 2 release as a test for an eventual Total 40,000 game where they do some tweaks to get the engine ready. I figure we will get one at some point for that reason if nothing else, although I am afraid it might not be very good if it really is mostly a test for another game they figure will be more popular.

for a fun thing, the game starts (at least in this mod) with the flag of the UK being England and Scotland. the diagonal cross was added because of Ireland. but I imagine that the reason it's called Great Britain and not England is because the British Empire formed when it was just 'England'. we still called things 'British' and not 'English'. the bases we set up to raid Spanish treasure fleets were still called 'British x' as opposed to English. so 'Great Britain' not just being Britain. it's weird as the two terms are supposed to be synomous of one another, but you see 'Great Britain' used for the Empire starting from England, and Britain for just the isles

@lionheartx10 true, it's a different engine, but isn't it based on the one before? And would the anticipate a need to run custom scripts to change the name of the nation. Again I know in medieval 2 the names have to be set at the start of the game and once they are they can't be changed.
