"The War of the Worlds" isn't actually the first alien invasion story, that title would belong to "The Germ Growers", written by Robert Potter published in 1892. It revolves around aliens who are disguised as humans who try to make a disease to assiet in their global conquest.

No hate to normies, but its a novel. Spielberg took one hasty observation of the novel and pretty much made something that was only 15% accurate to said novel.
