I enjoy the bit but I do have one thought on the Pirates of the Caribbean change. If they are changing it because of the inherent immorality of selling women, are they worried about the inherent immorality of murdering, robbing and burning villages? If pirates are a source of enjoyment then to some extent we are separating what is moral from what is entertaining. Of course, the auction seen is immoral as a historical matter. But it is no more immoral or problematic than the whole idea behind piracy. That is why this charge seems so bizarre. It seems to be rather selective about a moral question that almost no one struggles with.

Your war exception is arbitrary. Why would that exception make a difference? And not to be pedantic but what does "outside of war" mean? So if a group of marauders goes about ransacking villages or burning them then that counts as war and is different than piracy? You do understand that this still happens today outside of traditional war settings, right? And not to belabor the point but even if you refused to accept that any of the myriad cases of villages being destroyed that still happen today happen outside of a "war" scenario, why would that matter to this discussion? And I take it that you are under the impression that murder and robbery are gone from the earth as well. Or perhaps, those only happen during war and for some reason don't count as counter examples. Also, bit of a minor point but piracy itself still happens today. How does that affect your assessment?

@@zacg_ most of your tirade makes no sense. There is no reason to pretend I think murder or robbery only happen in war. Trafficking people is common, and honestly protected. I work with trafficking survivors. In Tx alone over 300,000 individuals are sexually trafficked a year. When we look at quotas (8 rapes a day at least 6 days a week) it results in over 1.5 million rapes (or instances of people being sold) in a single year, in one state, in one country, in just one industry selling people occurs in many other forms). My reason for making a distinction between acts of war, and non acts was that acts of war are not something the majority of people fear. But being trafficked and sold can happen to anyone and happens on a regular and consistent basis. However you are clearly a dismissive and condescending ass who will never be open to perspectives that are not his own, so if yoy respond again I will not engage.

Or at least that was the clear implication because you justified the distinction between including murder, robbery and village destruction as opposed to the auction because human trafficking is a modern phenomenon. I never said or implied that human trafficking or rape don't happen today or that they are uncommon. My point is that those other things also happen today and are also morally reprehensible. And yet, we are able to distinguish between a ride that demonstrates a certain aesthetic of piracy and the idea that such immoral behavior is excusable. So again, why do you feel that the auction scene is inherently different from the rest of that? Your answer made it clear that you think the distinction is that the auction represents an immoral phenomenon that is not long behind us but the rest of the ride does. My response was to ask you to square that argument with the fact that murder, village destruction and robbery still happen. Citing statistics about rape or human trafficking is completley off topic because no one was implying that such things are rare. Now if your real argument is that you don't like the entire ride because you think nothing immoral of that nature should be featured on a family ride then at least your argument is consistent. But then I'm puzzled by your distinction between murder or village destruction vs human trafficking in the first place. If you do think the rest of the ride is okay then you still haven't explained why those things are okay but the auction scene isn't. Or at least you haven't explained why ongoing human trafficking makes the auction scene wrong but ongoing murder, piracy or village destruction don't have any effect of the rest of the ride. But I guess I'm wasting my time because you have decided to dismiss any counter argument as arrogance or stubbornness instead of actually addressing anything that has been brought up. Maybe I should have just responded by citing statics about murder rates and then accusing you of being unwilling to accept the reality of murder and then labeling you something unfair because you didn't want to address murder in your response. But I didn't do that because it would have been a bad faith accusation and I was instead addressing the actual argument you made. But it looks like you don't want to do the same for me so I guess that must make me the one who isn't open to other perspectives.
