You gotta keep the target inside that small box only to fire the missile, then you can disengage, just keep the laser designator on target

That's not how it works IRL. The Vikhr have very special laser guiding - laser beam riding. It is guided by laser beam that dynamically changes its shape of cone. Closer the missile is, the smaller cone is to keep accurancy. You have to lase the target until the very end or the missile will miss.

Hi Cpt, small tips - this small window is just vikhr launch limits, the tracking window is much wider (you can see limits with gun camera), also you can make it much bigger if you using target pod. Also the export variant (su-39) have radar with ability to find and lock moving ground targets which making a lot easier to defeat convoys in sim battles. Also vikhr distance is about 10 km so if you see ПР on the screen its stands for launch is allowed

@@storm1225 No you shouldnt, its slow heavy ground attacker who supposed to face F-14/16/Mig29/Mirages with only two R60M and 18 vikhrs that was nerfed agains AA. If you lucky and you team is dominating there is a small chance to bite a bit vehichles or kill sm1 with vikhr in face to face. Its good for ground RB but its awful in sim battles - you just a beat meat

Yeah i agree, the EC environment is too small with not enough ground targets on most for the su39/25t or any other slow high dwell time dedicated cas to do their job, the engagement ranges at 11.3 can be at times almost half the map with some missiles - these poor cas just get intercepted 99% of the time before they can do anything. We need maps with a minimum size of the new canyon map for br's 11.3+ imo, would help also if we had some more targets for cas to hit, not many maps have more then the two convoys and a single ground battle which really isnt enough and often means you have to try and push through the entire enemy team undetected which is almost impossible.

Last time I played tank top tier (last week), it was actually pretty fun. Somehow there weren't quite as many SAMs so there actually was room to do something in a plane, without being untouchable either. Not to mention there was easily 2 or 3 aircraft per team which made it even more fun. Edit : for "optimal" loadout, you probably want to use the Kh-29s as well as the Vikhr so that you may dispatch the SPAA early on

You should try the Kh29Ts for ships! You can fire & forget them from a really long range, almost guaranteeing 2 ship kills! Then after that you can use the great targetting pod and Kh29L/Kh25MLs to engage other ships from a really far distance

i can tell you with certainty that chaff does affect spaa locks. i think the thing with sight stabilization is that it will snap back to the target point from memory so you dont have to find the target again, and it works normally when the target point is disabled. i do look forward to the day when we get tpod slew controls that work from cockpit, that would make high tier sim much more immersive. you can actually guide the vikhr from the full tpod range, and the box is just for firing, but what youre doing is what the real frogfoot does. though you need to actually use your max range, youre firing from half the distance you could, which is why youre always in range.

When you were talking about the 4 targeting buttons. There was a moment where you moved the TV camera independently from the laser pointer. My guess is that the target activation option points both the laser and camera. Whilst camera stabilization only locks or unlocks the tv camera independent of the laser pointer. If you look at 02:07 and 02:08. You can see a little circle where the laser is pointing eventhough you are pointing the tv camera crosshair to the right.

I found that if you fire off flares or any counter measure, their radar will shoot at it and not you.

Yeah the biggest issue with frogfoot at this br is the opponents your going to be facing - though naturally that is realistic and aircraft such as this will indeed get absolutely clapped by any fighter in real life and as such are strictly used only in a complete air superiority environment and/or in tandem with your own air superiority fighters going in front of you to clear the way - in the frogfoots case those are typically flankers. I think it could be a reasonably argued to give the frogfoot its r73's - though that could bring up some issues particularly outside of sim where your potentially facing 10.3 aircraft. Some things I've learnt for su25t/39 in warthunder sim: That bug where, when switching to the camera after setting a target, the view will be shifted to the maximum limits of gimbal instead of where your target was - is a massive issue, hugely frustrating and probably your strongest opponent after enemy jets - though its common to every aircraft I've used with optical systems(though ive only used russian ones so far) the su25 and mig27's all have the same issue and i presume the su17's and 22 would as well though i haven't tried deploying laser munitions from them so I'm not 100% sure. Its very unusual as the problem is exclusive to sim, in rb the controls function correctly. The only consistent workaround in all situations I've found is to clear your target point and re-engage it before switching to the camera. So generally, when doing multiple passes you will require your target based on your memorised target point, then point your nose to the memorised target circle, clear your target point, then set a new one on the same position as the old one(so long as you held your nose steady haha), then you can switch to the camera without issue. The Vikher has a guaranteed launch range of 8km and a max of 10, and as a benefit of being a fired from a fixed wing aircraft going much faster then a heli you can usually hit that 10km max without issue. So long as you have a good bead on your target you can fire them at that range and the farther the better to lessen risk of return fire. The missile will in general track your laser wherever its pointing, as such there isnt any need to remain nose on to your target, so long as your laser is still within its gimbal limits you can maneuver however you want - that box you can see in the hud is simply the missiles seeker limits, so the missile needs the laser to be pointed inside that box on launch to actually see it but afterwards it will maintain its position along your laser regardless of where you are facing. The monitor inside the cockpit is particularly useful, firstly it shows the gimbal limits on the top and left of the screen and so long as it is within those limits your missiles will still track the laser to the target. These can also come in really handy when trying to reacquire your targets on follow up passes as they can give you an understanding of where the memorised target point is relative to your heading - simply manoeuvre such that the gimbal limits are within their neutral position, and you will see the little target circle come into your hud. Secondly the number on the bottom shows your distance to the target point and remains true even while outside the gimbal limits - this is again very usuful for making efficient passes as you can fly out to max missile range before turning back for another run. Thirdly the number on the right of the screen is your radar altitude, this is the actual ground clearance you have and is separate from the altitude you might have in your hud as that is barometric and relative to sea level, can save you from unceremoniously meeting with a tree if you get tunnel visioned into the screen, something that is all too easy to do. Finally, the target point and sight stab keybinds do function very similarly and kind of work the same but can achieve different things as well. The target point can be used with the relative keybind to cycle through mission targets such as bombing bases and will set the aircraft's target to that - very useful for ccrp base bombing and finding the target (never tried it in sim as im not a bomber type but thats what it does in rb). While the sight stab, besides the namesake effect will set up a memorised target point as well as lock and track a target when pressed over a tank or such (like the target point keybind) but its best feature is; while locked on a target it can be pressed to enter a 'semi manual' mode and will generate an additional circle over the tracked target, this is the exact location the laser is aiming and can be moved around while retaining its relative position to the optically tracked target - this lets you aim at specific areas such as weak spots of tanks or ships, very very useful. They keybinds are still kind of janky and a wish they would just add an 'optical lock' keybind which strictly is only for that just to stop some unintended stuff that can happen sometimes. Both of them does the same thing basically but the target point bind allows you to auto aim some of the preloaded targets (like bases and airfields)thats why sometimes it points to another direction. There's another bind that allows you to change the preloaded target.

its kinda funny but you can lock on aircraft with the su25t, in total this plane has 20 aams and 18 of them are unflareble

Can also be done in DCS and there is a video of it being done to a target drone IRL. However, since it is Russian that video could be faked. However in DCS it will shoot down helicopters, especially if you use the A/A button in the Ka-50 to enable the proximity fuse.

If you know enough that you are trying to flare a vihker then you know it has shot at you and should have the mental capacity to just turn slightly to avoid it. Anyone who dies to a vihker while they are paying attention needs to learn the absolute bare basics of evading missiles instead of relying on the flare button. They are stupendously easy to defeat.

Missiles guidance are a little buggy recently after the last patch,some times felt like firing a AGM without guidance unit...thing was hitting everything but the target...

Also i dont think you “have to get close” you just chose to do so. The 23000 ft range i keep seeing is 7km 1km less then the vikhrs max range when fired by helicopter. And 3km less then when fired by fixed wing. Instead of racing towards the target at 450 mph. Drop flaps, go slow. You can easily get off 2-3 vikhrs from 10k away, and then roll off the target area at a 3-4k distance. EDIT for additional tip. not sure if it works in War thunder though as i have not yet tried myself, it definitely does in DCS. there is theoretically no limit on how many Vikhrs can be guided by 1 laser beam at the same time. thus if you find a group of ground targets, lets say 3 targets close to each other. what you can do is simply fire your first missile from 10K away. wait 2-3 seconds or so. fire a second, wait another 2-3 fire the third. that way when the first missile impacts. you have 2-3 seconds to retarget the laser designator for the second and another 2-3 for the third target after impact on the second. this should get your 3 missiles into the target area from some decent stand off range.

i dont like the Vikhrs at all. If Im using any type of rocket like that its TV guided because you dont have to keep looking at the thing youre firing at.
