Are we in a new Cold War with Russia? How does a new Cold War affect the safety and security of the US? Does Vladimir Putin really want to destabilize the West?
These questions that acclaimed historian Stephen F. Cohen poses in his new book, War with Russia? From Putin and Ukraine to Trump and Russiagate. He argues that America is in a new Cold War with Russian that’s even more dangerous than the one the world barely survived in the twentieth century-and is exacerbated by Washington’s war-like demonizing of the Kremlin leadership and by Russiagate’s unprecedented allegations. So, is he right? Iconic journalist Dan Rather and The Nation’s Katrina Vanden Heuvel join him to take an in-depth look at the real story of Russia now.
Recorded on January 23, 2019 at the 92nd Street Y.

Cohen's work is even more relevant today than ever before. There is a theme that runs through a lot of US political dynamics that continually causes trouble (also for the US), which is the tendency toward "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." The arming of ultra-nationalist militants in Ukraine, the mujahideen in Afghanistan and Bosnia, islamists in Syria, and so on...the list goes on and on. The recent embrace of state security apparatus by liberals and progressives because they are counter-posed against Trump is yet another example. This reflects a tendency of Americans (of every political stripe) toward a binary way of thinking...us-them, good guys-bad guys, Republicans-Democrats, etc.. And within US public dialogue on any issue, people have a strong tendency to force people into one of only two possible factions...if you critique Joe Biden then you must be a Trump supporter, if you critique US policy in Ukraine you must be a Putin apologist, if you challenge the US strategy in Syria then you are a supporter of the Assad regime, and so on. In my view, this not only fails to capture the reality of any situation, hence handicapping our ability to achieve genuine understanding as a society, but it is also destructive and toxic to dialogue itself. The binary framing is a pair of handcuffs on the possibility of what can be said and discussed in the public arena.
@elenaustyuzhanina297
@elenaustyuzhanina297 2 жыл бұрын
Such binary division is a cornerstone for state propaganda. It simplifies things eliminating the ability of critical thinking. So that population of the country could not criticize its own gvt's policies.
@goshane23
@goshane23 Жыл бұрын
the binary framing is a frame where the critical public sphere is extremly over-politicised. with the effect that there is no space for questions or questioning decisions. everything is in a strict sense decided before the discussion or debate has begun. the aims and the ends are fixed - one side or another - friend or foe. a real democratic public sphere is starving without real critical inputs. and that's something the west has to be concerned about: democracy is dying with this overpolitizing bias-related media and public (atmo)sphere. it's not by chance that one of the boldest rightwing and nazi-supporting political thinkers in nazi-germany, carl schmitt, gave the best picture of what this dualistic/binary political attitude means: the open road for the then not only state aparatus' driven fascism. nowadays this road needs not at first a "machtergreifung" by a fascist party and then the acclamation. it just needs the seed of permanent politicised (friend or foe) discourses and the related identity politics which support that concsiously or unconsciously by the media... when & where it's too late for questioning the seed has rooted and its blossoms spreading -

You're right about the binary framing problem. However, sadly Stephen Cohen is doing just the same thing. He shows plenty of understanding for Trump, Putin and the Russian army, but none whatsoever for Hillary Clinton, Ukraine, Europe and NATO. Probably, because he wants to show some sympathy for one side, he feels he needs to brand the other side as the 'bad guys'. It would have been much better if he had studied the history of the conflict, to see where it came from, rather than putting all the blame on one side. I had expected better from a clever guy like Cohen.

@@thetipsymankey - I've listened to Cohen for many years. I recognize that Russia is a great civilization with a legitimate place in the world, but not as a corrupt, xenaphobic thugocracy. Russia under Putin is steadily steaming to decline. After disolution of the USSR what Russia needed most was to establish roots of real democracy and the rule of law. Russia might have been saved if after 1990 deliberate steps were taken to transition from authoritarian rule to a stable, Western-oriented free-market democracy. But both Yeltsin and Putin were disinterested in pursuing that vision under the rule of law. Russia now is in irreversible decline. It is vulnerable to a breakup which could involve civil war with parts of its territory devoured by greedy neighbors like China.

@@johnmaxwell1750 I’m sorry but you got it totally wrong friend. The whole thing is complex and complicated to explain really from Boris Yeltsin to Putin. But also , that’s not the point of Cohen. His point in every talk is: We cannot blame Russia for everything. That’s all. From the Georgian war to the Ukraine crisis. The west has its part. I’ve listened to the late Prof Cohen Carefully. All his Statements were too meant that the West has to be blamed as well. It’s not just Russia fault every time. When it comes to economy , growth prosperity fine it’s something else. But let’s Russian judge accordingly. Knowing the 1990s crisis and poverty in Russia, we can all talk because we haven’t lived there to see how horrible it was really ans How Putin has made Russia glorious. I don’t say that his regime or Putin is perfect. But we , westerners tend to just see from an eye.
@johnmaxwell1750
@johnmaxwell1750 3 жыл бұрын
@@thetipsymankey- The bottom line is that Russia must save itself. It was never the responsibility of the US or the West to save Russia after the USSR folded. It was ultimately the responsibility of the Russian people to stop Yeltsin, Putin and the oligarchs from stealing the country blind. The only real hope for Russia has been people like Magnitsky, Nemtsov, Kasparov, and Navalny, supported by a free press and by the Russian people. But the people gave Putin their allegiance and allowed him to get entrenched. Now there is little hope for Russia as long as Putin murders his critics, like Anna Politkovskaya, Magnitsky, and Sergei Yushenkov, and his political opponents like Nemtsov. Cohen always knew damn well this was happening but never adequately addressed it. As a devout leftist Cohen was more comfortable assigning blame to the US. Don't be like Cohen. Don't make excuses for Putin the murderer and Putin the thug. Given Putin's past behavior, there are legitimate reasons for the US to fear him as long as he controls weapons of mass destruction. Cohen's relentless efforts to deflect blame to the US and to the West for Russian misbehavior have always been ridiculous. Since the USSR breakup all Russia has needed to do to get along with the US and the West has been to establish democracy, the rule of law, and to respect for human rights. None of that yet exists in Russia today.

Nothing they said was terribly at odds with Cohen, and Cohen's views - while more responsibly presented than most anything you'll see in the media - are much more in line with Rather and Katrina than those that defend Trump. Questioning Trump's motives is not the same as hating him, and we've moved ourselves too far into that soft authoritarianism Cohen speaks of if that questioning is a problem for you. The U.S. pushing further into authoritarianism is the main concern of most that were/are opposed to Trump, and that concern isn't a partisan thing.

Maybe because that would be counterproductive and senseless? They're just being childish there.

One thing really stands out of this debate: Concerns that Trump never said anything directly negative about Putin. Is this a prerequisite of being proper American? Has anybody heard president Putin speak? It appears that most of them did not bother, probably because of their sense of superiority. When Putin speaks, he consistently speaks of work to defend Russia, improving economy and living standards of Russians and maintaining the peace. No badmouthing, no provocations, no personal attacks against any politician, no overexagerated reactions to numerous smearing against him. He follows his plan without any drama. It is difficult not to like him. I do not blame Trump for being civil towards him. So neocons make up stories about Putin and Rusdia to keep the Americans kept in dark pressing this Russiagate story. Putin cares about his nation. Is this perhaps covert American jealousy ? The gentleman from Texas is nice man but he has no clue what is going on at the other part of the planet. Mr. Cohen lived in Russia, studied it on depth and he is quite aware. My impression is that he really holds back because it is not allowed in US today to be deviated from the prescribed narrative. I have deep respect for Mr. Cohen for his courage.

I think that the BEST way to REALLY understand what is happening on the GROUND in Russia, is simply to go to Russia and take a look for yourself... I mean damn, its less than $1000 plane ticket from NYC to Moscow/St. Petersburg... Go For a week, you dont need a VISA if you travel to St. Petersburg for a week or less... You can easily find good places to stay in the heart of the city for less than $50/night via AirBnB... Just go, look around, talk to people, and make up your own mind based on what you see and experience yourself... Mainstream media in US so sooooo biased and full of shit its unbelievable... I cant believe that they are still being considered to be NEWS AGENCIES... they are Bullshit/Propaganda blow horns... PERIOD... Also, Stephen Cohen is THE EXPERT on Russia in the Western world... this guy actually UNDERSTANDS how Russians think... and i havent heard anything obscene or idiotic out of him... if anything, i would say his only problem is that he is TOO ACCURATE on Russia/America relations...
