This is not just a documentary about a time and a place, this is a documentary about HUMANITY. Love and communion, death and division - culture, the arts, food, music. Bright lights of the night life, people milling about in the city square, people making a living day by day - stories of sorrow, greed, and war - then you turn a corner and you are able to see the hope, it cultivates in the viewer a real breadth of emotional experience when viewing. Masterfully done

These Massacres where absolutely terrible. Some of the worst Crimes i ever heard from Humans on this Planet. In this Film you see Rais, a small Village who was hit by one of these Massacres in 1997. Possibly up to 800 People have been brutaly slaughtered with their Heads cut off and out in front of Doorsteps. Babies thrown against Walls until they died. Children and Women raped, tortured, beaten up, throats cut, burned alive. People thrown out of Windows, screems of horror through the Night. People hiding in fear and dark and hearing their Families, Neighbors, Children, friends screaming of pain and horror. People recognizing the Murderers to be Neighbors and even Relatives, chasing them with Knives and Rifles like Maniacs. Confusion as how could they do that to us. Hours and hours of Slaughter. A traumatized Village, Houses with remaining stains of blood. Only Traumatized Survivors left. Some of them have completely stoped to talk. The horror made them mute. The murderers still walking around the Neighborhood, living besides the Survivors. Acting as if Life has become Normal again. How weird and terrible that must feel. People don't understand Life anymore.

My two cents on the first seconds of this video: why Algeria is always immediately introduced by the listing of all the conquerors who have passed through this land? Isn't that a French colonial narrative to justify the French conquest? Why don't we do the same for all the other countries? And why this blank between Arabs conquest and Ottoman period (more than 8 centuries) as if no local dynasties ruled this land in betweeen?

That's true. Algeria has so much to offer. Coastline, historic and cultural sites, cities, mountains, sahara, green landscapes, friendly people, good food, natural ressources, good products etc. It would be beautiful if all the people in algeria could profit from this richness... It's always corrupt governements anf wars ruining great countries and sadly giving them bad reputation. I'm not from algeria but i wish that more people would look and talk about your beautiful country. I'm always talking with my family about algeria and how nice it would be to visit. You're going a bit far with the conspiracy theory. I don't know a single Moroccan who has entertained the thought of taking advantage of your country. There's not a single instance of Moroccans getting together and saying we need to take advantage of Algeria, after we finish our cups of tea. Governments think like that, not people.

You still think an Algerian can't govern himself or manage the smallest of things to the point where he can't make a decision to take a photograph or not? If that's the case, destiny is weird, because an Algerian was given 2,400,00 km2 of land to manage and a Swiss was given a grass field!

There's nothing wrong with smoking cannabis, if done reasonably. Opening the borders will not increase cannabis consumption in Algeria. It doesn't work like that. It will lower the pirce and increase the quality, maybe, but not increase consumption. People who want to get high will find a means to do it. Even in Saudi Arabia where people are beheaded for drugs, people can find ways. It's really sad that there are still people buying into government propaganda, on both sides of the borders.

+Waranle84 Really? Don't you think that having the very people who slit their throat come back to live amongst them may be more discomforting than a photographer who's a witness of History? These people had their throats slit by terrorists who came back to live with them without any decency, remorse or judgement, who were asked not only to forgive and forget but to look up their buchers in the eyes every single day but somehow this has bothered you less than the photographer, who risked his life to bring these events to the world, coming back to talk with them?
