Warblers, warblers and more warblers! 18 species June 1-2 in Sax-Zim Bog. Ten species videoed (is that a word) and another 8 species heard/seen. We also enjoy a cooperative LeConte's Sparrow, find a drumming (!) female Black-backed Woodpecker, and watch in awe as a Great Gray Owl hunts voles close to the road.

Last week in May through end of June is best. You need to use vocalizations to call the warblers out of the dense forests though.

Ravens are one of my favorites. When I was a kid, they were pretty scarce here in Western New York, with a few found in the Southern Tier on the Pennsylvania border. They have become increasingly common, and now are among the breeding birds here in City of Buffalo.

I agree with you on ravens! And I have heard that they are reclaiming or expanding into areas that they’ve never been before. I guess it’s even happening here in Minnesota as they’ve always been in the northern half but are now sometimes seen in the south and western prairies.

Thanks, Deb! Yes, it is those connections that I make across the country that make this really fun and rewarding. Soon to come out with a series on birding south Texas. Take care!

Best to hire a guide Sondra. They are all listed on our website. For those species it would be best from late May through mid June.

Wow, I didn’t realize the bog was so epic this time of year. Which is better winter or summer??? 🤔🤷‍♂️
@SparkyStensaas

Hi Gabe, We still get probably 80 to 90% of our visitors in the winter from mid December to mid March. That is when you’ll have the best chance for owls and winter finches and other boreal birds. Plus all the feeders are up and going strong. The summer season is from mid May to end of June and that is mainly for warblers (20 species nest here), great gray owls in the early morning, and other specialties like LeConte’s Sparrow, Black-billed Cuckoo, Sharp-tailed Grouse etc.

Thanks I'm crazy about Warblers, they are my favorites as so colorful and small. A friend & I rescue songbirds, most perish on impact with window of the fall to cement. A recent youtube video shows us in Newark NJ, the video is named ' Volunteers give migrating birds injured in N.J’s biggest city a second chance ' Also TRT made a older video when we first started named ' Window Strikes in the Business District ' of us picking up Warblers. We bring the injured to TRT (The Raptor Trust)for a 2nd chance, they nurse them back to health. Liked the phonetics when you said Free Beer, I do not like beer but friends that do so I'm going to share that phrase. I had no idea Minnesota: was so good for birding, makes sense with those wide open spaces of trees, pines, fields..... so much better then the city of Newark where they have to pass thru on the Atlantic Flyway to get to Canada.

Do you give guided tours of the bog?
@SparkyStensaas
@SparkyStensaas 4 ай бұрын
Hi 1coolkitty, I am the executive Director so I don’t guide anymore. But on our website, there are six or seven guides listed. Most of them only guide in the winter when 90% of our visitors come, but some might guide in the spring/summer as well. We also have field trips during the month of May. Our website is www.saxzim.org.
