The fact that none of you is using the overly arched back stance yet you shoot efficiently makes me wonder if the bowmen we see doing this do it to just emulate the period paintings even if we know medieval paintings/badges were sometimes almost caricatural.

Wholly agree. Efficiency also assists enjoyment. Our motto, "tradition with a smile" (and without caricature ;-))

As someone who's very new to shooting heavier bows that stance is the only way I'm able to draw 100lb+. It's the best way to engage your back and all of your shoulder muscles to draw heavy bows to full draw (to the ear). It's absolutely necessary and very efficient in itself.

@@rockerkitch1990 thank you for the clarification. I've never shot over 50 pounds so I have to confess I have no idea if it is efficient for everybody or just some of us

@@davidducouret791 No worries. Before learning how to shoot heavy bows I'd only ever used my 30lb bow and I probably would've struggled to pull 50lb using the more modern style of shooting. But by using the forward leaning technique in just one day I was able to shoot 85lb all afternoon and ended up drawing 100lb to almost full draw (around 30" instead of the full 32") by the end which goes to show how effective it is. It's more efficient in the sense it recruits more muscle groups which conversely makes it much more fatiguing until the lesser used muscles catch up with strengthening and training.

As rockerkitch says the bows are light in draw weight and although longbow by design they aren't as heavy in draw weight as bows designed for warfare. So you dont need the "caricature" way of drawing the bow. look at it like lifting weight. nobody is going to go trough the correct form to lift there shopping bag because they arn't heavy enough to really mater. slap 100KG on the deadlift bar and form is going to matter. Same with bows the heavier you go the more form is going to matter in drawing it back far enough. eventually your shoulder muscles aren't going to get the job done anymore so you need to engage your back muscles. the only way to do that is by arching your back like you see in drawings (and see the few people do that can actually pull back a proper warbow these days) also looking at this video you can see a lot of the shooter start that arch themselves since using your back to shoot bows is just way more comfortable then trying to use your arm muscles.
