6:00 Arthas here covers in this scene quite a short distance, but from his perspective, its a very long and torturous walk, through every soldier on his command slaughtering those whom they had sworn to protect to his destination: those who were the most innocent - a mother with her child. Warcraft 3 forever changed a story of Azeroth, quite away from the lore of previous chapters.

Well said! The mother and child part was not something I particularly liked having to animate, but it was necessary to show the depth that Arthas was willing to go.

Coming back to this episode for a rewatch, and I just have to say - using Anduin's Dominated theme from Shadowlands for this scene was pure perfection. While I must admit the series itself isn't perfect (some voice lines are mixed a little too loudly, previous episodes had scenes that lingered too long or shots with awkward angles), this is definitely one of those moments where it shines like gold. Especially at 5:08. I also really liked the Order 66 reference at 6:13 whether it was intentional or not, lol. Looking forward to your later episodes, mate!
@savingthewow5792 Жыл бұрын
I think the order 66 wasn't really intentional, but I always felt like Arthas and Anakin had a very similar fall to darkness, so I was probably on the same wave length and didn't even realize it. Once I finish the Human campaign I plan to go back and re-edit some of the older episodes....improve the cinematography in some cases, but also just editing some scenes down when they run too long. I've learned a lot about editing and pacing as I've been doing these episodes so the older episodes where I was still learning stick out to me.

The only thing that I can really say that is wrong with this, is the fact that Malganis doesn't turn the living into the undead, as he did in the game. This is a huge detail that makes Arthas right in his actions, the living will turn if he lets them. So although I appreciate and enjoy the portrayl of the grim fate that the villagers face, it really undermines Arthas' difficult choice to "save" the villagers by killing them before Malganis can get to them, if Malganis can just raise them anyway.
@DesignerDave2 жыл бұрын
Your mistake is believing Arthas was right in his actions. He wasn't... He fell into the exact trap that was set for him and rushed his people to their demise and his fate to become the leader of the Undead. That's the tragic tale of Arthas, who by his impulsive nature, believed he was saving his people when he was actually damning his entire land to undeath... Just as the Prophet, Medivh, foretold.

The cinematography is fantastic. The loving and detailed design of Stratholme with the mix of models from Warcraft 3 and WoW looks very good. The variation in dialogue order also fits much better. Only the choice of music is not always quite spot on. The idyllic music of Elwynn, for example, at the beginning does not fit the tense mood in the scene.

While I understand the choice of making it seem that they were purging unturned people the entire time, I think it takes away from how the story was meant to be framed: That it was clear Arthas was justified in what he was doing, and that adds to the tragedy of what happened. The truth of Stratholme was that Arthas was too late, and he didn't actually manage to kill too many people before they were turned; and that Malganis simply turned everyone in the city before Arthas rendered them unusable as undead. The fact that he kills innocent civilians only for them to be raised as undead later defeats the whole point of the setup, because in addition to him being right to kill them before they could be turned; had Jaina and Uther stuck around they would have witnessed Malganis forcibly turning everyone into an undead army, and they would have witnessed Arthas being correct in his assertion of the situation. The irony of Arthas' story is that had Frostmorne had been a holy weapon, not a cursed one; he would have been considered a hero through and through: All of his struggles, all of his choices would have been proven to be the correct ones. Such is the brilliance of the story of Arthas: Every choice he made was the correct one, except for the last one. To this day people assume he was being arrogant, selfish, and foolish; yet even at the very end when he made the last and incorrect choice he made a declaration: That he would take on any curse if it meant saving his people. It wasn't pride that was his downfall, it was his self-sacrifice; and he unwittingly sacrificed his soul. Remember that he was welcomed back to Lorderon as the hero who defeated Malganis and the Scourge, it would have been a happy ending under any other circumstance; and his story only works because he was doing the right thing from start to finish. It's only tragic because he was genuinely a good man, a good man that Jaina loved, a good man that Uther cared for, a good man that his Father was proud of. Framing him as a cold heartless man who only cares about revenge turns the story from a tragic fall to someone who deserved his fate.
@aceb46348 ай бұрын
It was a tragic fall. And he deserved his fate. It's clear in the original that everyone hadn't turned in a visible way. Just that they were going to. They didn't magically stop being sentient, they're still going to he scared, and run, and won't understand what's being done. It was an evil act, even if it was done for "the greater good". Just because we like or are attached to characters doesn't mean we need to sanitize their actions.
@marcorizzoni97667 ай бұрын
@@aceb4634 It was still a mercy death: everyone infected would have suffered a fate way worse than an hammer strike to the head, and the few ones that weren’t infected would ALSO have suffered a fate worse than an hammer strike to the head, dismembered alive by their zombified loved ones before being raised as undead too. To kill them was still the right thing for the same reason to kill an horse with broken legs (before the modern medicine) would have been the right, merciful choice: he would have died anyway, but worse. And in the case of stratholme, there is also the factor that if the population is left to be zombified, the entire lordaeron would fall soon after under the massive new army of undead. There was no cure and no way to quarantine a city with the second biggest population of the kingdom now entirely made of ravaging undead. There was simply no option where the population of the city would survive, and in all other options they would be have an horrificly worse death and the rest of the kingdom would get one too.
@davidmukarovsky20445 ай бұрын
Although taking up Frostmourne was the only point of no return, Arthas's previous choices had often been morally wrong: his refusal to entertain any option other than a complete purge (which he wouldn't finish anyway because he went off to chase Malganis), his rash accusation and dismissal of Uther, his betrayal and slaughter of the mercenaries he'd hired, and finally his choice of revenge at the expense of his comrades' lives. Arthas told Muradin, "Damn the men! Nothing shall prevent me from having my revenge, old friend. Not even you." Then, after Muradin had been struck by a piece of ice, Arthas didn't try to help him but carelessly left him for dead. Despite that, Arthas's last words before taking up Frostmourne showed his desire to save his people even if it meant sacrificing himself: "I call out to the spirits of this place. I will give anything or pay any price, if only you will help me save my people." Overall, he was neither a perfect hero nor a total psycho, but quite a "human" character. He had a lot of commendable qualities, yet let himself be ruled by his passions. He is a tragically flawed character done right, which makes his story arc so memorable.
@marcorizzoni97665 ай бұрын
@@davidmukarovsky2044 To be fair, no options outside of the purge were actually presented to him by anybody, and uther was unable to suggest any feasible line of action that wouldn’t end up with “the people of stratholme die anyway horribly and mal’ganis gets an undead army able to steamrolle over our kingdom”. He still should have forced uther to “give a better alternative or admit that there is no other option”, arguing in a rational way, instead of how he reacted, but arthas probably wasn’t in a mental state conductive to rational arguing with someone that wasn’t arguing constructively while the time was running out.
@davidmukarovsky20445 ай бұрын
@@marcorizzoni9766 Arthas didn't give anyone any chance to present better options. In a few seconds, he reaches a horrifying decision without consulting anyone and expects everyone to obey. Jaina and Uther and his knights weren't at Hearthglen when its inhabitants started turning into zombies en masse, so obviously they wouldn't quite on the same page even if they accepted Arthas's erroneous assumption that everyone in Stratholme was infected. Uther literally goes "What?!" when he hears Arthas's prediction that all the people will turn into the undead. And when Uther says "There's got to be some other way", Arthas doesn't ask "What other way?", as one would expect a student to ask their mentor in such a situation, but instead he's like "Damn it! I'm your prince, just do as I say!" Arthas was not only rash but quite arrogant and foolishly overconfident at this instance, acting as if he didn't need any allies against Mal'Ganis. And surely, Uther or Jaina would've suggested other courses of action if given a chance. The Light or magic could be used to slow down the progress of the plague, and they could find out for sure how many were infected and quarantine them. Indiscriminate killing was not the way. A city full of fresh corpses is something that the Scourge can easily make us of. Arthas should have known by then. Ironically, with the help of Jaina, Uther and his army, he might have killed any people really turning into zombies much more quickly and even wiped the floor with Mal'Ganis there and then, or at least would not need Frostmourne to defeat him. Of course, Arthas was traumatized by all he had been through. His actions are relatively understandable for us who have seen the story through his eyes, but they're still wrong, including his refusal to discuss what other ways there were. Uther was as constructive as any sane person should be if their friend told them, "Everyone in this town has contracted an unimaginably horrible disease, and you're going to help me kill them!"

I can't remember exactly how the undead campaign lines up. Right now I just gotta get Arthas through Northrend and the Orcs across the ocean to Kalimdor.

My...God...THIS IS BEAUTIFUL BEYOND COMPREHENSION... I wonder since if you can do Reign of Chaos...you could do The Frozen Throne...

I would love to tell that much of the story. Depends on how long it takes me to get through the Reign of chaos story

@@savingthewow5792 It'll pretty much be long. With the 'Battle of Mount Hyjal' (the final mission of Reign of Chaos). But I think it'll be WORTH IT.
