And I can tell you people's final masks of culture and civility drop away as well when you find yourselves in a real trial. And you get to see the interplay of fear, pride, and prejudice, right along with courage, humility, and selflessness -- and I will tell you that as humans we are not irredeemable. We're just poor for real tests of character, and we are poisonously wrong in painting our highest heroes as prideful and unforgiving. The mountains can teach you humility and forgiveness better than society.
