@@WARdROBEPlaysWWII aside from the Hexasim Eagles games I haven't really got for Napoleonic. It's a miracle I've stayed friends for 30 years with some La Bataille bores and their colour vomit counters.

Great video - could have listened to you discussing this for another couple of hours 👍. Can't really argue with any of your choices as it's such a subjective topic. For myself, I'd probably add Kingdom of Heaven (MMP 2012, best game on the crusades), Stalingrad: Verdun on the Volga (2017 and deservedly getting a reprint from ATO this year) and Storm Over Jerusalem (MMP 2023, more area impulse, gorgeous map and such a tense game every time, even playing solo). I do admit that I'm biased towards my favourite historical themes though, and I can be quite forgiving of a game's faults if I'm a fan of the period.

For anyone wishing to play D-Day at Omaha Beach on a decluttered map, find my version on BGG or within the VASSAL module for it (I think). It vastly improves the experience in reading the map, especially if printed in physical form, with less need to lift counter stacks and much clearer terrain definitions, especially for some of the trickier hex edge stuff.

Go for it, it was really fun to compare games each year! The hardest part is finding what games were published each year, and I'm worried I may have missed some!

Excellent endeavor! Our tastes overlap quite a lot. I need to play more of Simonitch’s 194X series. I must chime in on Sword of Rome. It is second to Beech’s HiS/VQ series for multiplayer CDG. I have played the series about a dozen times. The game was originally designed as a 4p game. It is balanced at that player count, not at 5p. I recommend replaying at this count. All powers can win, but Etr/Sam must do more on diplomacy to survive early (as well as using bribes judiciously).

Thanks Henry, good to have your insight on Sword of Rome. We only played it once, but, much like HIS, I appreciate it'd benefit a lot from repeated plays.

Hello from Belgium (Waterloo, Ardennes ...). Great channel and brilliant video. I agree with most of your selection but you forgot Pacific War (2nd edition) in 2022. For 2024, please consider Europe in Turmoil 2 and the upcoming "the other side of the Hill". Cheers.

Yeah I've been watching a lot of Michael's 'Training Materials' videos, which has really been tempting me; I'm just worried it'll be a huge learning curve! theboardgameschronicle.com/2023/07/24/gmts-pacific-war-training-materials/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1M202km8H0wyFC6cDSC3SddqOS346OLZPg1HPKvblrS5karr3F-MgL2oo_aem_ZmFrZWR1bW15MTZieXRlcw

@@WiseGuyHistory Great materials. I also created some aids that I am happy to share. Best is to first learn the naval unit mechanics and play scenario 2. Then add air units and play Pearl Harbour and then finally add the ground units. And if you are familiar with Empire of the Sun, it will also help.

Good call, PW should be in there. Definitely soloable (with some compromise), it's by far the best way to learn the nuances, depth and intricacies of the system. Campaign scenarios are where the game really shines. The rulebook can create more questions than answers but most issues have now been ironed out on BGG. Give me a shout if you ever want a crash course!

2008: Worst rulebook ever. I exaggerate. Luck probably plays a bigger role at this scale. 2009: Butterfield is the solitaire god-level designer. The rest are mere mortals. 2010: Yes, I found Normandy '44 to be grinding, and I think it would benefit from a larger map at a finer scale. 2017: Holland '44 is one of my favourite wargames ever. Men of Iron series is one of my favourite series from this century. Thanks for the video.

Here I Stand. Sold mine since I dont really have a group. You said 2 players is good? Do you use the variant deck, or just run as it is? There’s a reprint happening so thinking of getting it again.

Yeah I've used the 2p deck, it's not as good as a 3p or 6p game, but still fun [and much faster!].
