Loads of stuff was put on the internet back then without *any* security at all, and for critical stuff like this security could be bypassed if you knew what you where doing. Obiously not as easy as this though.

Security was lighter back then, few people knew to even hook computers to telephones to look at other computers back then they didn't factor for this as much. Plus like others have said it was a backdoor hiding as a video game site
