Wargames Atlantic- Late Roman Legionaries!

So these arrived yesterday and I couldn't wait to dig in!
Curious to see this is set one- Lorica Hamata. Perhaps we'll see some armor variations down the line? I won't object!
First thing I notice is we've got the full sprue as opposed to the half sized kits like the lizards Afghans. It's packed too, and you've got enough bits to equip a command unit, spearmen, swordsmen, and dart throwers as well. Quite a few head variations are included for all sorts of conversion purposes.
The bodies themselves are nicely sculpted and pretty thoroughly armored.
The only things I feel this kit is missing is a few more bare heads and some cloaks. The cloaks are one I wish was there, but I'll dig through my bits for some.
I feel these guys will work for a lot of purposes. Town guards, historical war games (especially when the Goth kit is available), skirmish games, as a Frostgrave warband, some Ranger companions, a low fantasy Kingdom of Men for mass battles... there's a lot you could do with these guys, before you even start digging through the bits.
I'm just eager to share these guys with you all, so hopefully once I've had a bit more time to sit down with them I can put together some interesting figures!

Thanks for the review! We have a 60-man Army Builder set coming for the Late Romans as well that will be priced the same as this box. The idea for those of you building proper wargame armies is that you will be able to take one of these boxes and 2 of the AB sets and build 6 full 24 man units with command (or whatever other ratios you like). Also the shield is based on the Dura Europos find and is scaled (at 1/56 for 28mm sizing) exactly to that one. Other sets in this range (of which many are on the way) will have other shield types depending on the unit.

There are helmets that can be used for the Severan dynasty (AD 193 to 235) period ie. The Middle Imperial Romans.

The upcoming Franks kit also has the exact same armor and arms but with different weapons, so good call on holding off on assembly :)

Great review. The darts were alternately known as plumbata, as you mentioned, or sometimes as martiobarbuli.

The lizardman heads may not fit but all the non-human ones from Stargrave should. Legion of chimp-headed soldiers in the future?

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature Kamandi tells me it should really be tigers in Roman gear instead, but Stargrave hasn't done kitty heads yet. The (communist) apes wore boiler suits instead. Although maybe the Tiger Empire recruited a bunch of chimp auxillia?

Great news. Goth Warriors shipping this week with 30 figures for the same price. Also, spare parts from this kit work well with Gripping Beast plastic Late Romans

Do you know how well these figures scale with Gripping Beast plastics? Do the shields look big?

They mix well with Gripping Beast Saxons and Victrix Vikings. But shields are too big and I won't be using mine. They will go well with Goths that will be released later in year. Nice kit.

Nice kit! The shields do look to be over-sized though, especially for round ones, but otherwise the figures look great

Hi Spawn they were actually that big. This is based off the Dura Europos shield which was 117cm x 97cm!

What would you suggest checking out first from them? We prefer smaller sized games (as we can usually have everything painted for those).

@@ObscuritiesinMiniature dux britanniarum only really comes alive with an invested gaming group but is a really good entrypoint to swords and sandals. You can easily supplant unit bricks for single minis. 😄 It does however quickly devolve when you find footsore and $12 saga romans. I know sharp practice is playable at like 3-5 minis but I can't for the life of me find the dedicated book for that, might be a custom jobbie. The mood almost builds itself with with skirmishers axing each other down in hogan's heroes type napoleonic scenarios.
