Had 'Sindri' (Daemon of the Maledictum) won in the first game Chaos would have destroyed the Imperium before the 13th Black Crusade. Gabriel's death allows Kyrias to corrupt the entire Blood Ravens Chapter The Maledictum grows stronger by sacrificing the souls of Macha and her soldiers to Slaanesh. He absorbs the warbands of Crull, Eliphas and Carreon. The Ultramarines lose an entire company on Graia. The Forge World becomes a Daemon World under Daemon Prince Nemoth. I never liked the fact that the techmarine could be the traitor, especially since he was specifically tasked with analysing the audio which would identify him. If he was guilty it would make no sense for him to willfully deliver information that would expose him. He basically goes from "Commander the traitor is on this ship" to "k bye". Guess that's why it's not canon.

Same here. I always wondered who exactly would be the traitor if all of your squads are pure, and then i was like "Omg, it will be Martellus, will he?" And indeed he was, and i too was so annoyed by that. They could have altered the last two missions that instead of Martellus, it would be Eliphas, annoyed that despite his efforts to corrupt them and turn them on each other, they remain loyal to each other and the emperor, we kill him and we proceed with last mission, but without Eliphas encounter. That would made much more sense than killing the very guy who helped us uncover the traitor in the first place.

My cannon gameplay for Chaos Rising is: -Max corruption for Avitus -Medium to high corruption for Hairgel and Thaddeus, but not to reach maximum corruption -None or Low corruption for Tarkus -Full purity for Cyrus and Jonah -Kill Galan save Diomedes -Get penitence crusade ending This way in the Retribution, the no appearances of Hairgel and Thaddeus can be explained as they're crusading to the Eye of Terror with some other almost corrupted brothers. The fact that his comrades is a heretics and his commander going on penitent crusade shocks Tarkus, and made him take the Ancient oath. Without the commander of the 4th company, Thule, Martellus, Cyrus, and Jonah ask to be transferred to the Angelo's 3rd company. Angelos in turn send Martellus, Cyrus, and Thule to Diomedes to prove him of Kyras heresy. In Retribution Thule is represented as the Venerable Dreadnought that follow Martelus.

I usually take that as Canon even though Davian is still kind of in limbo at the moment on if he's really alive or not. It was stated that he fought at the defence of Cadia with his fellow Blood Ravens but it's not confirmed.

Well what we could tell from the start of Retribution is that Jonah was with Angelos, and Cyrus and Martellus were innocent which meant one had to be a traitor. The Ancient was also a way to disguise whodunit by hiding one of the identity of the Sergeants. Upon the reveal of Sgt. Tarkus as The Ancient he confessed that Avitus was the traitor, leaving Thaddeus (and the commander) MIA. I think the penance crusade was after the release.

Watching and Playing Chaos Rising recently it still is my favourite alongside Winter Assault. I absolutely adore how you uncover a massive conspiracy that surrounds the Blood Ravens Chapter and why they were sent to the locations in the past games and finding out that your own leader of your entire Chapter has been a Heretic for untold years, what effects he's had on your troops especially Avitus, who literally has a mental breakdown the poor guy and that Kyras is the main antagonist of the entire seven games setting up his mighty sacrifice to Khorne when *"WE WILL DEFINE RIGHTEOUSNESS!!."* It really ties everything together well and all the mystery and sets up Retribution nicely for the endgame.

2:32:41 Uh hold up there Tarkus. You can't really lump that apothecary galan as a heretic. Especially since he specifically mentioned he was possessed. Being in a space hulk in the warp for that long tends to leave that opportunity open. The death guard are a perfect example of what happens when you're in the warp for too long. And besides, he also provided info on everyone who's still loyal and isn't after the demon was done in. I just hope he was turned into a dreadnaught after that. I like to think he was anyway.

Considering how Chaos Rising ended, you think it may have taken less considering everyone else from the Commander's team that lived canon wise (except Thaddeus since he went with the commander for the century long penance) ended up with Diomedes.

I can’t be the only one who cringes when the term “Chaos Space Marines” is used in-universe, be it by Imperials, Heretics, or Xenos. It would be far better in terms of immersion if in-universe characters used terms such as “Traitor Astartes” or “Corrupted Astartes” or at the very most “Chaos Astartes”. Chaos Space Marines is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds when used in 40K games. I don’t have an issue when the term is used casually outside of the media but when it’s used in-universe it just sounds childish.

Absolutely agreed but let's be honest, I personally have more of a problem with when the "Chaos Space Marines" talk about their gods as "dark gods". I mean if the Imperium calls them dark? Sure, guess that works, but wasn't the entire story behind the heresy, that most traitors thought of themselves as enlightened? Because they found the "true gods"? Suppose there are several weird terms used in 40k that don't really make sense.

Tavar You summed it up exactly as I thought. In DOW2 Eliphas, Araghast, and Nemroth in particular act like Saturday evening cartoon villains who RELISH IN BEING EVIIIIILLLLL! While 40K does have parts of its universe that are just absolutely hilarious at times like Orks and their Cockney English(Yes I know most of the time Orks don’t speak Low Gothic) Chaos in particular gets this depiction in DOW2 with the only exception being Kyras. Kyras actually believes in Khorne as a means of growing stronger and immortal into a Daemon Prince and his character reflects that he knows exactly what he is doing when manipulating both the Blood Ravens in the greater universe and the player’s particular faction in Retribution while not acting like a meme worthy joke. So there’s that to keep in mind that with Chaos in reality that many traitors join it just out of self interest with no real care for the “gods” yet there are also those like that of the Word Bearers who literally worship the gods as the “true gods” as you said. But ultimately keep in mind they are traitors to the Emperor of Mankind who deserved to be crushed under the trends of THE IMPERIAL GUARD!

@@Gvardsman Could be translation error to English. Warhammer 40K uses Gothic language, be it High or Low variant. Same thing with Time Lord in Doctor Who, in Gallifreyan it is gender neutral and most SJWs freak out that it does not include Time Ladies in species name when spoken in english language... So it is perfectly possible that they have a one word term for them in Low Gothic that translates as three words in English.

When the entered that ancient Space Hulk and were fighting Xenos at first I thought they were Necrons but were Tyranids. But Tyranids don't use advanced weapons. So what are they shooting you with? Stingers? Some type of poison but heated mixed with highly corrosive acid? Or like biological plasma?

According to a reliable source (tvtropes) if none of the members are tainted the traitor will be the Techmarine Martellus. However, in the over-arcing lore of the dawn of war games, it is Devastator sergeant Avitus who is the canon betrayer, which is what is shown in the video. Overall it is the player's actions that determine who the traitor is and what version of events you will see.

Normal. I dont really care about the difficulty lvl. For me the important thing is the story. This way I could focus on getting all the bits and pieces rather than focusing on playing. I did a playthrough on twitch in hard difficulty. Have played this game about 10 times during the years :) five times less that half life 2 which is 15 :D

Ok ill say it I believe the blood ravens are from the death guard I mean one nurgles involved two Gabriel got essentially put into a blender and still lives and acts like its nothing 3 the death guard had no psykers but all astartes had them only some refused to use them and got rid of them but we don't know what happened to the pyskers besides typhus what if notation sent them away to die and they returned and changed there title

Blood Ravens are officially known for their high numbers (and emphasis) on psykers, as well as their desire for knowledge (such as in the arcane and the Warp); this is similar to the Thousand Sons, who also had a high number of psykers/sorcerers and a great emphasis on them, as well as had an equal or even greater desire for knowledge than the Blood Ravens; we know that some companies of the pre-Heresy Thousand Sons weren't involved in the Fall of Prospero and were deployed elsewhere or were too late to arrive to be of any aid, thus their fates are unknown even to this day (some were exclusive like Janus, who became first Supreme Grand Master of the Grey Knights). Although Nurgle was involved, he also has a good amount of sorcerers in his arsenal too, specifically the Malignant Plaguecasters and the Plague Sorcerers, making them also a force that has some emphasis on psychic abilities; it is possible that the Blood Ravens simply didn't pique Tzeetch's interests, but rather Nurgle was piqued due to unknown reasons, but your thoughts are understandable. Maybe Nurgle wanted to take advantage of their knowledge hunger to spread his plagues? I mean, this is where Tzeetch and Nurgle are similar at, the hunt for knowledge
