GREAT !!!! Yesterday I did the "ball and thumb" activity with two of my classes (only two students in each class) ... but instead of answering the question directly, I had them ask the other student the question before tossing the ball back to me. I did this also with two eight-year olds, adapting the language to their level - and they absolutely LOVED it! It gave me another idea: I took 10 little balls and wrote one question on each, then I tossed the balls down the hall, called out a question, and they had to look for the ball with that question. This way I introduced them to new questions and they got lots of reading and listening practice. (they are still at a very elementary age...)

One of my students' favourite warm-up activities is "ask the right question". You prepare in advance a set of cards with words, collocations, phrasal verbs or any other useful short expressions ("take a seat") that you want your students to practice. It's best if you laminate these cards (approx 2x5 cm) so that they can be re-used multiple times. Ideal for one-to-one or small classes, but also larger classes where students can work in pairs. Here's how it works: Give each student 5 cards face-down and a time-limit of 2-3 minutes (depending on their level). The student now has to get their opponent to say the exact phrase on the card by asking a question. Definitions or explanations are not allowed, nor are translations, mime, rhyming words. It has to be a question. The student must try to get through all 5 cards within the time limit. You can adjust the level of difficulty so that even relatively low level students can play the game. The great thing about it is that it more or less obliges the students to think in the target language, and it's fun because ss sometimes come up with crazy questions to elicit the right response!

Hi I am an English teacher I need a help I am teaching 7 secondary grade and they are so noisy they move and speak and I take about 15 minutes to make them quiet
@hauraqurratul71295 жыл бұрын
I think that you should perhaps design an activity or games that involves movement as your students are all kinesthetic-like...

The tips are ok but the sound of your video is really bad
@MsEnglishcorner7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it´s the classroom, you know :-) My videos are not professional TV spots with mikes all over the place. They are everyday lessons in everyday classrooms. I believe that´s what most teachers want to see. I have subtitles in other videos though.

Thank you for your answer, I will watch the subtitled videos you mentioned. :)

I know it's old, but these ideas are bad for the warm up, because they don't have any communicative tasks in them. None of them. Like answer the question from the ball. Where is the comunication? It can be easily fixed tho, if you just ask other students to ask follow up questions. Don't get me even started about the rest of the activities x)))
@ahmadsayed83915 жыл бұрын
A few number of students there are 😂😂😂😂😂I have 78 student in the class
@alanbravo95407 жыл бұрын
can u explain the ball and thumb activity please, the sound isn't quite good.
@MsEnglishcorner7 жыл бұрын
The teacher writes various tasks on the ball with a permanent marker. Then the teacher tosses the ball to a pupil who has to answer the question his/her right thumb is on. If the pupil’s right thumb is on a coloured field, he/she can choose whichever question he/she likes. After answering the question, the pupil throws the ball back to the teacher and the teacher tosses it to another pupil.

Aren't the learners a bit too old for tossing the ball and guessing letters? These activities could have worked better with 7-year olds rather than teens.
@MsEnglishcorner6 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Even adults find activities with a ball very refreshing ;-) As for letters, the students practise spelling and there is always need for that even when they are older.
@iamroy57696 жыл бұрын
These activities are really boring, I mean It doesn´t work with regular classes; few creativity come on!
