It's March - warm up time! This month I'll be making four videos of practice warm ups: body, BREATHING/SOUND, fingers and tongue. You can do the warm ups along with me in this video!
In this video, I will give you a whole bunch of easy to follow exercises, designed to warm you up and improve your breathing, tone production, and quality of sound. These exercises can be easily adapted so you never get bored and can invent your own!
Thanks to Jorge Isaac and Walter van Hauwe for some of the tips and techniques used in this video.
I play here on a 440 alto by Yoav Ran. (I normally like to warm up on my 415 alto but I wanted everyone to be able to play along with me! :)
Did you see part 1 of this series yet?
Part 1: warming up the BODY

Thank you for your helpful and entertaining videos! I am working on better warm ups and practice so this video is just what I need. What is the advantage of holding the breath instead of just breathing in and out?

Hi Your vids are great. Do you have any sheet music showing the different scales you do at the end. I can read basic music but don't know the different scales. Thanks

Hi Sarah, sorry if you covered this in another video, I was just wondering if you have any tips for high notes to sound less strident? I suppose it will have something to do with controlling the air, but it seems so difficult to not just breathe everything out when there is no resistance, such as when you're playing high. :(

Hi Sarah! I was a heavy smoker for many years, and I have less than half of your lung capacity. How do I make use of the air that I can take it?

Hello. I am learning the recorder. At home in my free time by myself. I read your story and it inspired me. When you do the breathing exercises in the beginning you make a strong sound breathing in prior to holding your breath for 4 counts. Are you breathing in with your lips forming an O through your mouth as opposed to your nose ? Also is that better form ? There must be some reason for doing it that way.

Hi Arvind, I always breathe in through my mouth, in the most relaxed way - that way I can take the most amount of air in :)

(I am not a native English speaker so...^^;) Hello, I really have to ask this question to Sarah or anyone else playing the recorder. I am playing since 3 months and feel I am improving a lot. But after playing hours, I feel so much pressure on my low teeth in the front. And they continue to itch (?) all day long. Is it normal? and other people feel the same sometimes? Thanks a lot for your postings.

Hi Jo, thanks for your message! Hmm, I haven't come across this before. Are you pressing the recorder on your teeth, or biting the recorder? Try and make your lips as relaxed as possible, and don't put any pressure on the recorder. I find it helps to say 'brrrrrr' to loosen the lips, to make sure there's no tension there. I hope that helps!
