Speaking to a person's heart is best done through language. Making deep connections happens faster if you can speak in someone's native language. Learning another language is the fastest way to make new friends. I talked to Chinese immigrants in Chinatown, Japan and warmed their hearts by simply speaking their language. You can too.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

I'm so happy for you! 100k plaque coming soon. Your content is quickly becoming some of my favorite. There's no travel blog so intimate around Tokyo (Hopefully soon Shanghai or another city) like this. We get to see how Chinese immigrants live and work in Japan with commentary on cultural differences. I love listening for the pronounciations and tonal differences of both languages and comparing it between all these these speakers. Through your blog, I learned I like the sound of Mandarin above all the Asian languages and probably would want to learn that one first. Also, the novelty of a Westerner speaking Mandarin fluently has not wore off. Th novelty of their reaction will take a while to wear off. You're also a great ambassador for the U.S, keeping up with international relations 😆 Keep up the good work!!

That would be really cool, because at 100K the channel gets a KZbin partner to protect it. That way if there are issues like channel hacking, I have someone to call.

That's because you have to copy accent. If you don't, it will sound strange when you speak it.

I would also note that it's important to reflect your same gender when learning another language. It goes beyond gendered articles, but with a lot of languages even your gender affects your tone or how you speak.

It doesn't change automatically. It's intentional. Like how the English has different accents in different countries. But japanese has just one country. So that's the accent

I like Yokohama very much. I was glad that I decided to go there. I was literally in Kawasaki only 15 minutes by train but only went to Tokyo 30 minutes away. It's totally different, a lot more relaxed. Ice Skating there was fun with people chatting to me. I am also learning Chinese so it's probably a good place to stay next time I go.

@Oriental Pearl Oh I've got a good question for you that i was really confused about related to Japan. I met this person in Taiwan who works for a Japanese International company, so we went on a date again in Japan, I lightly put my elbow on the table, and it was a very unstable table and the hot chocolate cup did a cartwheel off her side of the table spilling on the floor. Well after that and having been given a gift by her (chocolate or something) I asked if i can send something to her company, she said she doesn't think it's a good idea but i messaged again saying i just need to pay you back for the problem of that night. As I was flying out that day and the post office shuts 20 minutes later, I didn't wait for a reply so just sent to the business address on the card some tokyo banana. I got a reply saying how bad that i sent a gift to work and it's not acceptable in the company. I never realised it like that. I thought that people receive mail at least in the UK they do to their work, like some staff get their amazon or ebay delivered. Now I know it's different in Japan. It's a shame they ended the friendship though.

Love to see that they are also laughing with you, because making little jokes is, I think, another level. It seems that you've mastered it very well. Still loving the surprised faces. I've also noticed that you often walk away and then say goodbye (without looking back). Is that also a cultural thing in Japan/China?

I am someone who speaks reasonable Spanish and whether in Spanish or English i love to talk to shop workers, waiting staff, taxi drivers etc

DARK SIDE That just sounds like a weeb talking to me. I don’t hate China, I hate their government but Chinese people are very nice individuals in general. Mandarin isn’t ugly, it’s much different from what we’re used to but once you take time to study it a bit it’s not ugly at all. Plus Japanese is based off Mandarin, if you don’t even know that don’t try to act like you know Japanese that well. You probably don’t even try to find other Asian languages, Asia is not just Japan and China.. I know plenty of people that do love China so stop assuming what people think because you don’t like it.

The other thing that comes across ...both in the title of the video and text but actually evidenced by your interactions, is your enthusiasm for talking to people. Thats exactly why, as much as language can be a barrier and yes sometimes things need to be done in English, real communication is talking to someone in their own language - translators and interpreters are good but there is always that barrier

That said, what you’ve achieved is really inspiring. Jīa yóu! (Not sure if that’s strictly a Taiwanese idiom but it’s “add gas” or, “go Oriental Pearl!). I have some videos about Japanese. The next one will be focused on Japanese. But I don't plan to do videos without explanations in English. Viewers that don't speak Japanese may get tired of listening to 10 minutes of a language they don't know.

@Oriental Pearl Thank you! Oh no, I meant that since you mostly conversate with Chinese people in Japan, what about a video of speaking Nihongo with Japanese locals? Keep the subtitles 😊

I am an African lived in China over a decade and I speak Chinese but I will also love to speak Japanese since I can read little bit of their character even tho I won’t get the meaning but Japanese language absolutely sounds so different.

Amazing 😳 great job, speaking two languages which are the most difficult in the world. I know one American girl from Oregon, who studied several languages in Kazakhstan. She speaks fluently like you , but only in Kazakh and Russian languages. She also visits markets, shops and other different places to speak with locals. Everybody are surprised of her perfect accent and high level of grammar . Maybe someday you’ll also wish to learn Kazakh language as well. Well done 👍🏻

I took your advice on pimsleur and it is a really good course actually! Working my way through Japanese 1. In your videos you seem really confident - back in England people don't seem to be as friendly as the people you speak too and it makes me anxious. Do you find Japanese people to be more friendly than westerners generally? I plan to move to Japan in the next few years. The people seem relaxed and friendly to talk to. ありがとございます

@Oriental Pearl oh don't worry if you've seen one video you've seen them all. It bothers me too, I watch multilingual videos for the personality on display and motivation to actually learn a language, and on those I get neither and yours both.

@Ani It comes from a place of humility. Irish people do it too. It's like how in Japan, when someone offers you a gift, you should refuse it 2 times before finally graciously accepting it. I guess it's to show how much you value the gift/compliment.

Love your channel!! I guess one of the biggest things that is so unique about your channel is the sense of simplicity it has. It's just you with a camera. I kinda got tired of watching all the big productions from other channels, they seem kinda fake to me (most of them just try to capture the reactions of the people and don't focus on the conversations). This channel is just so real which is very refreshing to watch. You do get surprised reactions but you also show the rest of the conversation too, which feels like you're a friend who's showing us an inside view of the Japanese/Chinese lifestyle. Thanks for all the content. We love you! ❤️

@Oriental Pearl You're welcome. I've seen a few Bald and Bankrupt videos. Nothing against the guy, but I feel his content is a bit more produced and not really spontaneous (I might be wrong, but that's what I feel) Your videos, on the other hand, are very real and authentic (you literally say in one of your recent videos that you find saying "please like comment subscribe", etc. very cheesy, which is so relatable XD). Authentic content is surprisingly rare to find these days on KZbin. So props to you for the fantastic work. I imagine there's a lot of work which goes behind the scenes, contrary to the popular belief - "oh it's just a travel vlog, it must be so easy, yada yada yada" XD I've been trying to learn Japanese for a few months now (that's how I found your channel). Watching your interact so nonchalantly in Japanese with the locals is what I aspire to do as well. Hopefully, I can reach that level in a few years. :) And yes, your Chinese is very good (just to annoy you a tiny bit XD)

I would’ve never known there are so many Chinese live in Japan. Seem like a fun place to visit, I can browse around all day ,ending up buying and eating too much.
