Warner Archive Blu-rays for May and June!

Warner Archive is the only boutique label where I'm (slowly) making a concerted effort to eventually obtain all of their releases. Some will say this is sacrilege, but I think their quality standards on transfers and restorations equal and in many cases even surpass Criterion's.

Some great releases! I have never seen 'The Clock' but it sounds delightful. Will definitely have to check it out.

Gene Kelly's film debut in FOR ME AND MY GAL followed his enormous stage success in Rodgers and Hart's PAL JOEY which was a critical success but to cynical for early 40s audiences. While GAL was a hit, Kelly did not hit his stride until MGM loaned him away to Columbia for COVER GIRL with Rita Hayworth and Phil Silvers. That film and the number,"Make Way for Tomorrow" assured his stardom.

Some of the recent extras have been solid. "A Star is Born" (1938) essentially had old night at the movies recreation. Fun stuff.

The 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of the most underrated horror films ever. Spot-on description of the Dali-esque dream sequence, it's rad and pretty damn risqué. Also worth mentioning that it was also nominated for Oscars for Director of Photography, Editing and Music. IMO the cinematography is even better than the year's winner, How Green Was My Valley. Those dingy dark streets of London must really pop in HD.

Oh wow, didn’t know about the award noms! Could totally see why it got some attention in that way - and yes the HD street scenes (& the whole film) looks lovely. Warner Archive always delivers high quality in terms of presentation 👍

The 1931 version is the only “DVD” (vs blu ray) I’ve purchased in yrs. Really hope it gets upgraded soon.

Same here! Really hoping that is getting this version could perhaps mean the other is coming? Hoping the elements were in good enough shape to be restored 🤞
