It was a "family classic" at home. We all sit together to watch it when it was in television. I still watch it from time to time. Needless to say I always cry like a baby.

I especially love how, at the very end of the scene, Mel Ferrer looks at the puppet and nods his approval.

The beginning of the scene is missing unfortunately. Lily, a childish woman all alone, was about to commit suicide. And Paul uses his puppets to keep her attention and save her life. And then he, who is always dark and upset, finds a way to express his tenderness to someone, through his puppet...

It was based on the novelette "Love of seven Dolls" by Paul Gallico. The opening line is "In Paris in the spring of our times, a young girl was about to throw herself into the Seine." It is a very moving story, of abuse and redemption, and the enduring power of love. Well worth a read, if you enjoyed the movie it fleshes out the characters, and especially the puppets, into each of which the puppeteer has buried a part of his personality, for safekeeping, so to speak.

Reading the biography of director Charles Walters and was reminded of seeing this film at home as a much heralded special presentation as a child. To read about what a hit the film was (with one film house in NYC negotiating an exclusive deal for playing it) was really impressive.

I know I was disgusted because the man who is supposed to be in love with her slaps her face at one time. Violence is not love.

Why did you find it depressing? I saw it years ago but don't remember the ending.

Exactly. He’s 30 years older than her, she’s literally 16, he hits her and treats her like crap and can only be nice to her when he’s pretending to be child-friendly puppets. And what does she do? Run right back to him. This poor girl is guaranteed a lifetime of toxicity and misery.
@robertomagnani8091 Жыл бұрын
@@12classics39 Oh, yes. And it is very sad reading that some people comment: "It was the first movie I ever saw in my life", "My mother took me to the movies when I was five", and so. This is a movie for adults, not for children. And it is a very sad film. Poor girl.

This is one of the most disturbing films ever because this 16-year-old girl ends up with this 30-something guy who verbally abuses her and can only act softly when he's pretending to be hand puppets so that she can "fix" him. How is this romantic? The ending is one of the saddest I've ever seen because she's throwing herself into what is guaranteed to be a toxic and miserable relationship - and yet it's played as happy.

This movie used to creep me out. Not only develops a fully grown man feelings for a girl that seems 15, on top of it she does not seem in full command of her mental capacities ( forgetting / not realising she is talking to puppets that are voiced by said man ???)

@richardhaynes57933 жыл бұрын
Leslie Caron is lovely, but the puppets don't make sense to me. They are supposed to be glove puppets operated by a single operator. As I understand it they never have moving mouths and certainly not closing eyes. The whole point of the scene as written by Gallico is, correctly, to do with illusion and the magic of the imagination. Love of Seven Dolls is one of my all time favourite books.
