My grandfather was a theatrical broker for many of the theaters in Manhattan and was responsible for Ms. Garland during one production. He told many stories of his days on Broadway, and many of them put me to sleep. But I knew who Judy Garland was from watching The Wizard of Oz , so I always stopped to listen to this story. When she failed to show up on time, he drove over to her hotel and picked her up. Somehow he was able to calm her enough that she agreed to go on stage. Grandpa had amazing empathy for others, and knew that she was suffering. Her death broke his heart, and he would become very emotional when talking about her. As I got older I grew to understand the hurdles in her life that had caused him to feel such compassion for her.

I think if she had quit acting after her son was born and being robbed by Grace Kelly, she would have focused on getting better and stop talking drugs and focus on raising her kids, despite her addictions she loved her children and she didn't want them to become like her and it may have prevented Judy from dying young. She was robbed of seeing Liza, Lorna, and Joey grow up and being a grandmother. Wherever she is, Judy is happy now, she's with her dad again and I hoped God slammed the door in her mother's face because parents like Judy's greedy bitch mother aren't welcome in heaven

We were watching Liza & Mother Videos and one of them mentioned about Judy being tiny & I said I wonder if all the Drugs she was given stunted her growth. One of Judy’s quotes was “ I am Short With Really Long Legs” & You can see in the clip For Come On Get Happy how long her legs are. Judy took six weeks off to lose weight and to come off the Drugs and the result her pulling off just wearing a Dinner Jacket..

Richard Harris Liza is a great actress and dancer but not a great singer . She talk sings and then will hit one note loudly - she doesn’t sing the melody portion of the song- Judy sang harmony and melody ( singing sequencing chords as wellS singing individual sequencing notes . ) Judy also dang the true note and not in between the notes . Liza has a hard time blending individual notes together - one can hear the jump from one note to the other . In other words Judy sang the full orchestra while Liza sings individual notes without segueing in to the next note . Thus talk singing became her style due to not being able to transition without it being noticed . Liza is a great story singer - great for Broadway songs but not for torch songs as “ the man that got away “ very few singers have Judy’s talent and Liza has loads of talent just not in Judy’s league

My great uncle was in this Update: Reposting my comment here since no one is seeing my reply "I'm sorry about my late response- I've been very unactive with this account. So, my great uncle went by the stage name of "Jerry Duane"- but legally he was Jerry Davenport. At 0:09 in the video, he was the one to the left (right next to) of Judy, who jumps and falls onto the ground. He moved to NYC at a young age and performed in a number of broadway shows as just mainly small roles and backup dancing. Also found a clip of him performing in a musical group called "The Starlighters"- even though he came in later and wasn't apart of the main musicians that formed the band. Also whistled in several Old Spice and Pepsi commercials, as well as performing in Betty White's radio show. I have an article on his career if anyone is interested! Anyways... yes, to those who were asking, that's who my great uncle was."

NY Nurse - you're absolutely right, many of her closed friends said that Judy had a photograph memory. Ann Miller said that Judy got to the set late because she new what to do and didn't like to rehearsed the numbers she already knew, and at the end they fired her from another movie because of lateness. I think MGM was quite patient with her. She had to be replaced in three films in her final three years at Metro. Metro finally terminated her from the studio completely. Business is business and she was affecting the bottom line with her inability to show up on time or to show up at all. MGM even paid for her time in a sanitarium while she was still with the studio. But after they had to replace for the third time in a film called Royal Wedding, MGM had had enough. As you know, Royal Wedding was to be her next film after Summer Stock.

Only ONE of her films, "The Pirate", ( A great movie that was ahead of its time) lost money at the box office. "The Pirate" was also the only one of Gene Kelly's MGM films that was a "flop". JUDY GARLAND was the greatest talent of the 20th century, period. There is no one that even comes close to her level of artistry today. I realize that every performer is open to criticism, but I would like to end with this... Judy was full of love and joy and people will be talking about her extraordinary talent long after we are gone.

When I was a very young gay man and was first meeting other gay men I did not understand why there was a big portrait of Judy Garland in their homes so often. All I knew her for was "The Wizard of Oz". When I was a more experienced gay man and a bit more cynical I still didn't get the adulation. I just thought she was an emotionally messy and victim queen of perpetual angst, booze, and tranquilizer-driven romantic drama. But now? I get it. It's the vulnerability, the raw emotion; I see why people adored her and why gay men bow at the Judy altar. Once you live a little, love a little, get dumped a time or two, get your heart broken and feel like shit for breaking someone else's you realise there's a Judy Garland in us all but most of us hide it .

jambo jambogb I would say if there is a victim of Hollywood abuse it’s Judy Garland. They fed her drugs as a child and forced her to become addicted. Her emotional state being so influenced by her “care takers”, it’s hard to draw the line of what was her own mental illness and what was inflicted upon her. I would say given what she had been dealt, she played her cards better than anyone else would’ve in the same situation.

She was a victim of the star system. As a young gay man, what drew me to her was her insane talent contrasted by a deep deep sadness that I related to. Judy was too good for this world and her mother and the studio ruined her, yet her talent lives on and transcends time.

I've never understood why gay men obsess over female stars like Garland. I get it that they were supremely talented, but so were lots of other stars. It's such a stereotype to fawn over Garland and Minnelli, or Streisand or Bette Davis or Joan Crawford. And I say this as a lover of old films and music . . . who also happens to be gay.

Well just the opening part... I thought exactly the same as you when I saw it... He studied a lot of this old gold Hollywood era... He took a lot from Fred Astaire (wore his exact suit in smooth criminal), Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, the Nicholas brothers etc... He would have watched this thousands of times without a doubt 😁... He always said "study the greats and become greater"

One of my favorite numbers of Judy ! And she looked really good here. I never understood why the studio heads were so obsessed about her weight. I heard they practically starved this poor girl. What a shame. Because she had a great figure as well as being incredibly talented. I've had a crush on Judy for years, and always will.

if you look at all the other female stars of the time, she was heavier than the “willowy” stars were, and shorter too, which made her look heavier. Look at Deanna Durbin , Elizabeth Taylor, June Lockhart, Etc. Her body type didn’t run to willowy. Her height is what made her such a great partner for Mickey Rooney since he wasn’t tall either. She was in a class by herself and Louis B Mayer tried to force her into the mold of his other starlets, which didn’t work very well. I would have loved to see her in Annie Get Your Gun.

'Get Happy' was filmed three months after the rest of the picture, during which time she was in a sanatorium, was hypnotized and put on on a crash diet since she would have to show her legs. The resultant pill consumption meant that her hair was coming out in clumps and her normally clear skin in rashes when she began 'Annie Get Your Gun'. She lost her MGM contract when she kept missing scheduled shooting dates. 'Summer Stock', one of her worst films (this is the only memorable number in it), thus initiated her spiraling decline over the next two decades.

What amazed people at the time was her fully matured singing voice as a child. There is an early recording of her singing “ he’s just my Bill” as a child where she slightly goes off key. I think the video will if her with her sisters belting it out at age 4 or 5 tells a lot. In her own words she was “born for this”. My favorite is “zing went the strings of my heart” at age 13 or so. Perfect vibrato, pitch, and control. She could make you FEEL the song. Not just hear it. It was a gift from God in an earthen vessel.

She was IT! Beautiful, talented, dynamic, sensitive, energetic, classy, wonderful musical taste & projection...I could go on, but all you have to do is watch & listen. She was magnificent. I am fortunate to have been born during her lifetime, to have watched so many of her movies, and recently reread one of her biographies that seems, to me, to have been well researched & extensive, not glorifying or idolizing, but presenting Judy in all her glory, warts & all. Yes, she was fallible, yes, she was flawed, but man oh man: what a gal! Gutsy, witty, able to mock herself & did what she could & more during her all too short stay on this planet. She left us with a cinematic & musical legacy to be enjoyed forever.
