I just saw this for the first time. Wow. As a dancer, I've long been told that my main job is to make my partner look good. Fred Astaire is so gifted, his partners end up making HIM look good. But Vera-Ellen is no appendage. I once read that Vera-Ellen is one of only two dancers (Eleanor Powell being the other) who could keep up with Fred Astaire. She kept up with him in this routine, and they both pull it off flawlessly. Well, almost flawlessly . . . you just don't handle a baby that way . . .
@fionatsang93536 жыл бұрын
I agree, Fred and Vera-Ellen were marvelous together, such a shame they only collaborated on two movies. Eleanor Powell was a fantastic dancer - apparently so good even Fred was intimidated by her, in his words she 'put 'em down like a man' - but she perhaps lacked some of the chemistry his other partners had with him. Probably my favourite partner for Fred was Rita Hayworth; again they only did two movies together, but they were so brilliant. See if you can find 'So Near Yet So Far' from You'll Never Get Rich, they are incredibly well matched in that number!

The difference is that Ellie knew what she wanted and got it, whereas Vera-Ellen (like, say, Rita Hayworth or George Murphy) let herself be schooled by the studio. Not that the results weren't generally stunning. But Powell's hypnotic blend of assertiveness and radiance flows from her soul, and is unique in 90 years of sound film.
